Perilous Trail Event Cutscene Animation: "Moment of Life or Death" | Genshin Impact

Many years ago, the adeptus Sea Gazer made good friends with a thaumaturge. Emulating the story of adepti and mortal kindred spirits recorded in ancient texts, he gave the mortal his treasured device to aid his friend in battle.
He said: “Look, my friend. This contraption is rather intriguing. If you and I activate it, one can move the heavens and shake the earth.
Such is how the world works. What one may fail to do, two may succeed.
I have spent much time gazing at the sea in leisure and have seldom exerted myself, but it is my pleasure to aid others in need.
The battle ahead is fraught with peril. Millennia later, both you and I may linger in this world no more. When the time comes, someone can return this device to the mountains, which will serve as testament to our friendship.”

Thus did the catalyst find its way into mortal homes and stayed in their hands until…

  1. Это так круто что я с трудом подбираю слова. Все эти фантомы, сила Сяо. Это превосходно, я впечатлена

  2. The whole ethos of Zhongli as a leader is tough love. He will let his people and children fight their own battles to harden themselves for the unfair and ruthless world. But will never let anyone know he himself is ready to raise his shields and protect them from the worst of the worst. Even retired he is duty bound to be the last resort for his people. But ONLY, the last resort. Liyue would fall if its people became soft (hard lessons from the Qing Dynasty).

He's my favourite archon for a reason.

As a note: I think only Yanfei, Yelan & Xiao's efforts brought them close enough to the reality plane for ZL to detect their location & save everyone. Memes aside, ZL likely felt Xiao expend the rest of his energy to teleport others, but could not feel his last living Yaksha getting closer to him. Hence the save.

  3. Everyone who says Xiao should have died here so he could “finally know peace” missed the point of this quest entirely.

Xiao views himself as a tool; a weapon of war whose only purpose is to use his power to serve others. If he is put into a situation where he has to rely on others (like when he got injured) he sees himself as a burden. When he is at his limit and sees that he likely won’t be able to lift them all up to the surface in his current state, he knows the best chance they have is if he teleports the others first. This is his self-sacrificial nature, but there is some development as he now only resorts to it when there is no other choice. Whereas before it was a suggestion he threw about quite lightly.

He supposedly views such a suicide-ish death as noble, but deep down Xiao views death as inconsequential so long as it is in service to others, because his life without serving others (as he has done for thousands of years) is meaningless.

Zhongli saving Xiao is a turning point for his character, where in what he thought were his final moments Xiao is given a second chance. He accepts the help of another, however unexpected it may have been, and now that he is alive on the surface he is put in a place where he must reflect on/acknowledge the inherent value of his life on its own, not just as a weapon.

Yelan’s combative approach to Xiao’s philosophies is important to this realization as well, because she is on the other side of the coin where people like Xiao have sacrificed themselves for her. Coping with that is a burden in itself, which Xiao doesn’t really consider until the near-end of the quest in his discussion with the Traveller.

This quest was important for Xiao’s development and I was very impressed by its execution! I hope to see even more Archon Quests of this quality in the future.
