How The "Power Five" Ruined Four Star Characters | Genshin Impact

Fischl, Bennett, Sucrose, Xiangling and Xingqiu were part of the first wave of units in Genshin Impact way back dating to its release, and though many players both free to play and pay to win have enjoyed their affordable yet surprisingly effective power, the β€œPower Five” has made it exceedingly difficult for new four star characters to shine outside of a select few like Shinobu and Yaoyao. Today we’ll be discussing how these five units have ruined the balance of four star characters in Genshin Impact.

  1. I honestly think with how good hyperbloom is Shinobu is just as valuable as Bennett, maybe even more so. You get mobile healing and a ton of dmg all from one character who takes pretty much no field time.

Also for non Dendro teams she can hold TotM and again, mobile healing without freezing you like Barbara.

  2. They did nor ruin anything xd Mihoyo is doing bad 4 star characters lately and that's all. Kuki hyperbloom makes her as good as those (even though when she released she was worthless).

  3. I'd say that newer 4 stars should hyper focus into a niche, much like Mikah. I got Eula on her last rerun, and decided to build Mikah to support them because he is simply the best in that very specific thing. Personally I think such niche use characters are fine, because lets be honest nobody feels like making a completely new team from scratch for a new character. What I enjoy about building teams right now is that I can build a main dps, pick a support that might match them really well and fill up the rest with the power 5. This makes building acceptably effective teams way more convenient whilst still enticing me to build a new 4 star each time.

  4. The power 5 doesn't justify how aggressively useless they've made almost every newer 4 stars. Case in point they've also released very serviceable but not broken 4 star chars that still see use today. (Diona, Rosaria, Kuki, Heizou, Yaoyao etc) And they're serviceable for simply doing what they've been set to do without being gimped by some kind of crippling weaknesses that have no reason to exist. (needing late constellations to reach the "serviceable" state or to not feel awful to play, like having massive energy issues etc)

Not to mention we're not even comparing most of the newest *4 to these units. Freminet for example is struggling to even keep up with Razor, sooooo. (At least he is fun to play)

I'm all down for keeping the power levels balanced and not releasing stronger units than Bennett and the crew, but it doesn't equate to being okay with the current level of a vast majority of *4 stars, which at this point are nothing more than trophies or require C6 to stop being trophies

  5. It really feels like Hoyo figured out how to play their own game at the same rate the community did. I got the impression that they were mostly assuming people would be using characters on field primarily when designing them on launch, and that was before people realized how good Bennett was. By the time Hoyo figured out what they were doing, the damage had already been done. The amount of characters (and dendro in general really) that they seem to be designing specifically to not have synergy with Bennett feels like an admission that they messed up.

  6. The best solution I could think of that is remotely realistic would be to have some system that allows you to upgrad your 4* units into 5* units. Several other gatch games have such mechanics. They usually involve some accessive amount of time, farming etc. so that they don't canabilize the need to wish for 5*s and thus negativly influence the companies bottom line while at the same time dodging the 4* limits by no longer being 4*s … while this is mostly smoke and mirrors it does work on a psychological level. When you have to farm for a whole patch to upgrade your 4* it feels like they deserve the higher status.

While this works for other games for genshin they put some barriers in both due to the big 5 and one of their fix attempts, the ultra niche 4*s (faruzan, goro, sara). However this upgrade path does not have to be avaliable for every character and is just something that can be release for single characters one at a time. It's almost free content for the players that can be used very strategically for hype, bridging content holes and making your live streem look like the game has even more to offer.

If done well I belive such a system could benefit both mihoyo and the players. It also allows them to introduce new mechanics faster by giving us a 5*, a new 4* and a 4* upgrade that use it. This cold open up more design space.

Let's take Candace as an exmple. Her buffing is actullaly really good when it does matter but we don't have character that can properly utilize it. Also it scales of HP so a bigger base HP would already make her buff pretty viable as long as the 5* upgrade also makes it useable by more characters e.g. by also applying to elemental damage from skills (probably not burst πŸ˜‰ ). Someone like Bennet on the other hand would be a top tier 5* by the stat boost alone so any kit changes could only be non combat related like giving him both versions of the expedition passive.

Lastly they could even lock these upgrades behind additional "walls" like tying it to friendship level. While this would be most tedious for players it would also make that stat not be insignificant as well as being somewhat flavorful.

  7. Sucrose being included among the power 5 is a little bit of stretch. It should be power 4 in my opinion. If you're including sucrose then Barbara and diona could also contend for a spot in terms of viability. But then again maybe primarily being healers they don't seem that helpful in zhongli's presence

  8. As ironic as it sounds, one of the best way for them is to create some kind of content that ONLY allows 4* units. It's unlikely since it'll make them sell less, but seriously other than Yaoyao, the only times I used 4* units outside of Power 5 is when I do 4* only challenges and have to field 8 4* units.

  9. Eh I didn't like Bennett so I don't use him. My Fischl has been benched since AR24, I never used xiangling and my C3 Xingqui is untouched.

I purposely avoid the meta because it's actually quite boring to follow some laid out plan just for big numbers. I don't care about team comps either. As long as there's an electro & dendro then I'm good.

I love running Yae & Baizhu together 😌

  10. Honestly, I think that something that could help fix this is making more 4 stars similar to them. We can’t keep niches forever. For example, we could have a Fontaine character that has the same ultimate as Xinqiu and Yelan. Or for example, a character that boosts attack like Bennet, but to make it more interesting, have them be electro, or dendro.

  11. Finally! Thank you for covering this! I was called the "R" word for saying that these particular 4 star characters are ruining future 4 star characters.

Like no matter what 4 stars that come, people will always shove these 5 down everyone's team comp and in turn made future 4 stars either super niche or DOA

  12. As a someone who mains 2 4* who are… Rather useless (mostly Dori and Mika) I must say – I hate the "Power Five". Not because they are bad units, but because they can easily replaced my favorite characters with way lower investment. Their niche teams work better with different units.

I'm disappointed honestly. They can't buff 4* because they would be on the same level as 5*, but at the same time we have 4* who compete with 5*. And… Well, content in the game doesn't need stronger dps/supports so power five can't just… Be less useful. Once you get the team you can clear mostly everything.
I guess the other characters would be more valuable IF the content required specific conditions. (Like enemies who can be killed only using one element).
