  1. Yes, I'm really glad that mihoyo not to make a universal character at every new version. For me, who already playing this game since 1.0, not to roll for a "new meta" character everytime is great, since I can save more for characters that I really want. Maybe for new players, they have less options since there are way more characters than v1.0 and getting even specific 4* is hard, although thankfully most 4* at release version can be bought from shop from time to time. Of course both veteran and new players can still aims for old characters as well through characters rerun. This also mean for mihoyo, old characters can still generates money for them since they still offers distinct playstyle than other characters.

  2. I personally really like Niche units if they are meta defining/ best in slot on their specific niche. What really matters though is the overall design of the kit if it’s creatively fun or clunky. It’s better than releasing more versatile characters but are just worse than the other options that are already available in the game or straight up powercreep which would make this game even more predatory if that’s the case.

  3. I feel like niche is the way to go now, as it's about the only way to pad out the game from here on out. After all, we only have 7 elements, 5 weapons, and a few specific roles like dps, sub dps, etc. As time goes on, we'll just have too much general overlap. This is exacerbated by the fact we have resonances, which makes characters want to lean more towards a specific playstyle (pyro and cryo are generally damage based, geo is obviously defense based, dendro is obviously reaction based, etc). But you only need so many straightforward pyro dps, or shielders, or healers, etc. So how can you extend the roster and keep interest in pulling? Make characters do unique things and fulfill niche roles. Give them perks or playstyles you can't find anywhere else.

  4. considering every new 4 star is either bad or niche, its hard to get excited for the ones that aren't niche. at least the niche ones have teams that they excel in. when they release characters like sayu, xinyan, or dori i have to wonder what even is the point? I did have a blast with sara running her beside raiden, and gorou with itto, and yun jin with yoimiya/ayato. granted, they were all c6 but at least i felt like i was right to get excited for them.

  5. the more niche units get, the quicker will be Hoyo loss of revenue. People will start to skip 2-3 banners at the time, why bothering pulling for units that are hard to level up ( thanks to idiotical resin system that would benefit of some improvements) that can only be used in restricted scenarios?

  6. On the one hand at least it staves off power creep. Honkai impact had a horrendous power creep problem. It's one of the main reasons I quit playing it. They kept making my main more and more useless. And then my new main. And so on. And retrofits could only do so much. For the few who got them.

  7. Uniqueness and niche being a good thing is not a good take:
    1. Power to clear content should be the priority, and most of these niche 4 stars are not strong enough at C0 to help their team clear content. They take up a slot and don't give enough to help the team. For example, you can replace Yunjin with Sucrose in the Yoimiya example and instantly have a better team even at C0 Sucrose.
    2. The niche aspect is only good if that is a niche that is worth investing in. NA buffer is not that great to invest in because more improvements are obtained from investing in resistance shred (Sucrose) or ATK increase (Bennett). Only at C6 does Yunjin's NA buff actually overtake Bennett's ATK buff in the Yoimiya team, but this is terrible for F2P because they need to go to C6 to get something slightly better than a C0 legacy unit.

    Candace is the latest example (NA elemental buffer and gives hydro infusion) and even her C6 does not eclipse buffs from older legacy units. Just placed a banner to incentivize Cyno constellations.

  8. Eh, I dunno. I am just pretty bummed that good 4 star designs get wasted on meh kits. And ever since Inazuma most 4 stars need C6 to shine. Which is questionable. Imo.
    Hoyoverse could make solid kits without runing 4 stars. Idk what the issue is.

  9. It's an easy way out for HoYo but I don't think that super niche supports / units in general is a good thing from a gamedesign standpoint, and in the context of Genshin especially. It's hard to justify investing in these units as f2p / low spender if all they gonna do is support one or two teams at most, and not even be that amazing at it anyway. It also takes the fun away from the teambuilding aspect of the game. The fact that they resorted to such design just reinforces the idea that instead of trying to enrich the combat with new mechanics and think out of the box they much rather work within the existing design space and milk it dry. Boring.

  10. If every character has no niche and is instead a general catch all you would have no need to pull the characters that solve the problem crated for the niche. I can use hu tao vape team to solve 90% of the game through basic damage but the gameplay is stagnant. I like niche characters because they give you a solution to a created problem and give you a reason to use them therefore switching up gameplay.

  12. I am in favor of this because
    99%(1% being 36 star abyss) of the content of genshin as of now is so easy that having the basic comp(2 dps 1 shield and 1 heal) can make you beat everything the game has to offer quite comfortably. So having generally weaker units is going make fights feel more tougher than they are supposed to be giving somewhat more engagement(cuz lets be real you really cant utilise efficient meta teams dmg on open world because enemies just die so fast) so having these Niche unit is a somewhat sustainable system for Hoyo as while they dont gain big pp money from meta unit, they will always have continous money from whales and simps or waifu collectors like me rather than just have one big spend then none and atm its still good because dendro I believe has yet to reach its potential so while these units may only be limited to certain dendro reactions it may not feel too situational as dendro as its own element has yet to grow and I believe its potential will be sitting alongside vape/Morgana teams if not slightly below them. So most niche that we will get(dendro reaction limited) may still be considered generally good as they can still deal similar dps as morgana/vape.
