Shield tax for me is a wack analogy ngl. Scara and Yoi has dps increase because of the shielders. Seems like an on field hypercarry βtaxβ to me.
As per video, some shield characters are actually a net gain. Double Hydro Hutao with ZL petra is much better than without. ZL is even probably best in slot.
Diona for freeze gives all the utility, even EM increase is good for Kazuha swirls. You can put Rosaria in, but you have a crit rate βtaxβ to pay for crit buff and fav lance proc, something that sac diona does not pay.
Also, the national team comparison is bad. Putting in Diluc there is also a dps loss since you can build on field bennet instead (XL and benny can run less er).
Shield makes collecting energy before the next chamber safer. It's a trade between high risk high reward and consistency. The choice is in the characters you choose to put on the line. You choose to put a character that needs a shield, then it's a choice, not a tax. The problem is not characters working in pairs, like Xiangling and Bennett, it's the quality of the components. Shield dependant characters are perfectly fine as long as the shielders are fine. If the shielder part is the problem, then the problem is not the shield dependant character. If Yoimiya works with XQ and Beidou, then the problem is not Yoimiya, but the shielders options. Characters with high energy cost need one battery (tx) or more (tax), favonius weapons (tax). If the batteries are nice additions, there's no problem, isn't it ? So in the case of shielders, why are they not the problem ? What is the logic of saying that the shield dependant characters are the wrong element ? It makes no sense.
i play zhongli in some of my teams because i want to lay back and clear the abyss with chill while using my fav hyper carry and dont have to dodge, iframe all time( which is stressfull also i play in 200+ ping) which is why people still use zhongli because i will prefer comfort over optimal play.
yes the only thing is once u reach the point where u can clear abyss with 3 or even 2 characters or u just way past the dps requirement for floor 12 or any hard content.
ps: i am ar 60 f2p who can clear abyss 36 star but zhongli just makes every thing way easier for me(but only for certain teamcomps)
In Zhongli's case the shield isn't really that big of a loss because of the resistance shred. People act like he's contributing no damage when in fact that is not the case. It's so funny how alot of the people who when you watch them play clearly have skill issues are so gung ho against shields. The game isn't that hard in it's current form. There are plenty of teams where you can swap in a shielder and still 36 star clear, so while I agree a character being RELIANT on a shield can be a big issue, the fact that someone chooses to use a shield in their teams is not. Much a do about nothing.
Honestly Wanderer suffers less from opportunity cost in bringing a shielder on his primary team (aka Wanderer + Faruzan hyper teams) compared to other characters with shield requirements. Cyno is forced to choose between a battery or an anemo vv-shred character because of shields, Yoimiya similarly has to choose between a lot of great off-field dps characters, etc. But for Wanderer, Zhongli tends to be a good option regardless because there are not that many characters that synergize well with his hypercarry teams.
Where I feel this becomes a big sticking point for people is when you try to place Wanderer into traditional teams as he just doesn't feel like a great option in teams like national. But people try to force him into those teams because they don't feel like they can run his hyper team. And people feel like they can't run his hyper team because Faruzan SUCKS without constellations. I am running 330% ER on Faruzan and it still sucks. There is no sugar-coating that c6 Faruzan was made to fix several problems in Scaramouche's kit (natural ungrouping, lack of res shred/anemo% buffs, does not want to build ER% to burst every rotation and instead would prefer someone else battery him for it).
Why is he not that great in traditional teams? Well, there's the need for shields ofc. And his other passive (the free dodge but it's pure rng) is inconsistent as all hell. And he doesn't naturally provide anything to his team (you can just run VV on him that's kind of it). And his damage doesn't really make up for the lack of team buffs because of his own lack of stat buffs. And his absorption passive has no reason to only trigger upon hitting an element. It should be triggered by having that element in the party because it benefits his weaker teams where you're not mostly running anemo/geo characters.
So yeah Hoyoverse really said no fun allowed unless you pay the c6 Faruzan tax.
You can't just make a general case for the use of shields like you did in this video. There are simply team comps who benefit from it and team comps who don't. National and other quickswap style teams don't need it because they have tons of i-frames and don't take damage that way. But for the Main Dps comps that have their main carry on field for a long time and who can easily be staggered? Yes it brings so much comfort and utility. Xiao, Yoi, Wanderer, Cyno etc.. are just better off with a shield and it's just better for the overall team as well. None of that "shield tax" makes much sense.
I wish we could get more Shield characters like Layla and Zhongli where they are adding some value to the team besides just a shield. Zhongli's having Shred or Layla's being 100% uptime and doing additional damage. I actually don't mind playing with shields when it's necessary, but besides these two, I have no incentive to build any of the other ones.
zhongli has always been the most overrated character. Litteral zero support damage. Ultimate does negative damage. You're much better off doing ekemental skills on other teammates and getting particles for energy .
To put this in perspective. Kazuha's is a zhongli but ALSO does bery good damage. Yelan is nuts in dingle target while being a good element applier.
kokomi is a very good enabler, res to interruption ttds holder.
ayato ult is very good in aoe
4 stars like kuki and thoma are straight up better than zhongli.
Kuki is a zhongli (healing instead of res to interruption)but also can help quicken the enemy for you dendro teammate, amazing hyperbloom character and electro applier
People have to stop saying this character is good . 90 primo cost? My god this character's kit is so bad you might as well go for lisa (15% res shred on ult)with ttds
I dont know I successfully played C0 wanderer on floor 12 2nd half with benny xiangling and xingqiu last abyss. Imagine I passed thunderbird and those lawachurls with my mid skills without shielder lol. And this time I brought zhongli with him and easy passed the wolflord and doggos. I still 36stars abyss like whales and sweaty gamers with or without shield.
You know all this video makes me want is to not pay taxes.

TenTen laying down the truth. It's the way internet culture has developed though. I figure people don't really care about engaging in discussion anymore. They want to hear themselves speak and be validated regardless of what reality actually is. And so the reverse is also true. Regardless of the reality so long as what's being said feeling affirming to their established belief they will agree to it and therefore a very well thought out topic on reddit will not be as impactful as some person saying "but imo"
That said the reality of Genshin is that so long as your team works for you that's really all it is. As you said if you're good enough to use a shielder and clear Abyss with a shielder team go for it. There aren't any actual bad characters in this game just poor players who want an excuse. For example even I could believe that Faruzan was a terrible character especially with how slow it is to get back her Burst. But if you watch itspaikon he just did a video of an all Faruzan Co-op team wrecking all the bosses. Team Faruzan did better than Team Nahida.
Anyway I'm actually looking forward to more "monsta kaado" videos from you. That last one was amazing lol
I love wanderer so much that i pulled c5 but… That stupid tumble when hit by 1 hilichurls arrow is just stupid and cannot hit what below him is even more horrible wth????????
The way i see it, when you meet the dps check for the abyss bringing a shield can make your run more comfortable, i mean clearing a floor 10 seconds earlier doesn't give you more primogems. By the way, i used Wanderer (in the hyperbloom team) for the first half of this abyss and still clear it 36 stars without a shield, so i guess the game is easy enough for to justify any playstyle (to dodge or use a shield).
Isn't it the same with any other role you might need? Like needing an anemo unit for CC or healer for rifthounds/corrosion. You could run without it but it sure is convenient if you do.
However, I do get the frustration with wanderer specifically. The biggest problem is how his flying mechanic is designed. I don't really get what can hit him or not. Some can push him up or down. His recovery feels bad or tight. I would rather go down if I do get hit than try to recover.
This is why I'm running him with XQ taser or vape but it doesn't highlight him being the carry. I don't have faruzan anyway so I probably can't do hypercarry comp for abyss runs.
idk… I play Scara mostly with Thoma+Faruzan+Bennet: If you manage to get thoma c6, plus pyro resonance with bennet, I believe that shield taxes are not that high. For exploration I play Scara+Zhongli+Yelan+Faruzan which covers me on damage, mobility and mining, and then taser (Beidou+Xingqiu+Fischl) is really fun for multi-target scenarios too. You are right, Scaramouche is not the best choice for begginers, but for those who are looking for new playstyles, I believe he is an excellent choice.
actually, the problem isn't with the "need for shielders" as people tend to claim. Their problem is with interruption being in the game. Most people want to simply press buttons and do damage without fearing enemy interruption. This is contradictory to basic gameplay as it means that enemies have No way to punish players for…well…standing in fire.
Shielers have their role in the game, and working with them is a core part of some character kits.
Take for example, a HyperBloom team will usually have Traveller/Nahida, Barbara/Kokomi/Shinobu, Fischl/Raiden, and a shielder (either Zhongli/Diona/Layla etc.)
The reason for this is to allow the hydro/dendro applicators to apply their element with as little interruption as is possible.
The comp works just fine in this instance, and it can completely clear the Spiral Abyss, even if people don't call it 'meta'.
On the other hand, let's look at teams without a shielder. These teams, whether freeze or xinqui oriented teams, have either massive CC, or characters with resistance to interruption.
They don't use shielders, not because of an abundance of shielding, but because of a way to prevent interruption.
Basically, you use the tools you have, to overcome the challenges. Shielders have their place in the game, and designing characters to work with them is a decent design philosophy. Because to the opposite, would essentially make shields obsolete. And that…would just be bad game design.
It kind of doesn't make sense to make a character that relies on normal attacks not have resistance to interruption but I guess if every normal attacker did most shielders wouldn't have a job
Courtesy of Burgeon, I've come to really appreciate Thoma. Although his shield is more of a neat extra rather than being the reason for him to make it onto the team.
I've found myself barely every using my Zhongli since getting Kokomi in 2.1 and generally getting better at the game. Ever since I've come to see Zhongli as sort of a babysitter or training wheels. The better you get, the less valuable he comes. He's super nice and comfortable for getting to learn things – but eventually there comes the time when you just don't need him anymore.
Much how the people of Liyue didn't need him anymore… Huh. That's an analogy that fits weirdly well
Okay but who are the people building teams that have a shielder that does nothing else for the team? No one is just slotting in Layla in the Keqing Aggravate team. If you know what you're doing, you slotting in shielders to consolidate roles. If you put Layla in a freeze team over Rosaria, you are doing it for the Tenacity of the Milalith buff because Ganyu/Ayaka is hyper invested and you want more damage from your hyper carry.
I have brought Diona in teams because of the CO EM buff, healing and shield. She is an underrated addition to Yoimiya and HuTao teams. The occasional melts with the EM boost hits for truck loads.
At this point I dont believe anyone is bringing in a shielder just because.
I wouldn't feel bad having this kind of limitation on a really overpowered character (like melt Ganyu I suppose) but Wanderer isn't really very impressive, so having even more limitations feels kinda bad.

You should see one of the latest videos from Sekapoko when he used Noelle to kill the Rifthounds in the Spiral Abyss so I don't think using a shielder is necessarily bad in all circumstances.
Shield TAX? Theorycrafter now put economic politics in game lmao, this isn't theorycrafting anymore this is bullshit crafting, can't even enjoy playing game anymore π€£
I honestly feel like the single reason Yoimiya got hate for depending on a shield is because she wasn't as anticipated and not as loved in the genshin community
You can also have too damage invested into a tax haven that taking shields/defense is mostly irrelevant to you given how low the 36* abyss bar is. This Abyss, i went Ganyu, Qiqi and Geo Bros for 2nd half. Ganyu and Albedo were carrying Double Taxes and one of those taxes came from a banana republic.
1st team was Raiden National so cleared fast which probably contributed. Ganyu's build was really good, Albedo's build was mid at best because his arts domain sucks.
Okay, I'll have to pause on the Noelle part, because you genuinely flopped HARD there. The reason people get defensive whenever someone starts "Criticizing" their characters is because they do it in the most vile way possible. It is natural to interpret something along the lines of "Lololo yoimiya is trash why are you even using her just pull ayaka lmao" as outright hating on one's main and not being "Constructive criticism". This sort of thing happened too with Kokomi and if everyone listened to the theorycrafters being clowns and calling her bad, no one would have discovered her potential. I personally used Noelle in this very Abyss and she did incredibly well, her healing is strong enough to cover the team's need when fully red from corrosion, and though only for 12 seconds, her shield is durable enough to not break in those twelve seconds, unlike a shield like Diona which would shatter from Geo aura for example. And while using Noelle you can equip her with Archaic Petra and give one of your elements a 35% DMG% which is huge, and no, take a second or two to pick up the shard and switch off isn't the end of the world. There is a million and one way to play the game, it's normal for people to be upset when you push your own onto them.
Okay the only thing i dont like is that u went from 1 extreme to antoher. When saying that u clear abyss 36* wiht a shielder, giving the ure rich argument, at first i thought u just meant account progression, nope u were talking about money. So ure saying a f2p who bring a shielder on abyss will never clear with full starts?
Shield tax for me is a wack analogy ngl.

No , Bennett is half Healer and is not full healer as Qiqi
Also don't mind to play double healer as long as they are self rotation between them
4:39
Noelle shield is self protection and Healer while Xinyan is straight offensive shield
7:51 If you Hate those characters, say in public and stop hidden under the carpet
I wish could pay a tax to block your videos

ah yes tenten and his elitism if something isn't meta it's trash.
1:10 Ah yes, the typical Genshin player who thinks valid critiscism or call someone mid= You're attacking their main, love those, xD

I rly liked the taxes analogy here to make it all make sense here and flow onto each other, good take ππ
So, just grind your artifact hard enough to a point where your units no longer require shielder units? Got it.
I wouldn't feel bad having this kind of limitation on a really overpowered character (like melt Ganyu I suppose) but Wanderer isn't really very impressive, so having even more limitations feels kinda bad.
3.3 usage rate is gonna give TenTen the meltdown of his life ππ
Since the post about layla clearly is referring to wanderer, I'd like to point out chong yun is completely irrelevant because his atk spd buff only affects Sword Claymore and Polearm characters lol.
5:28 MATSUTAKE
this anti shield thing meta andys preach is outdated esp nowadays with certain shields that can apply elements off field. dodging can be a dps loss just as much as getting staggered from a hit or even knocked down. shields remove this problem. shields like thoma's and layla's are actually very useful since they apply elements off field to facilitate more reactions. not to mention the game ain't that hard and you don't need to have whale damage to 36 star abyss. having just 3 characters doing damage is perfectly viable and is usually the case anyway. how much damage does bennett do himself in national? basically none. so yall need to get off this anti shield kick yall cope over. the reddit post is absolutely correct.

HAHAHAHA SO SHIELD TAX IS WHY ZHONGLI IS ALWAYS POOR! Dayum… What a coincidence!
Guys, if Bob Jones reply in your comment, just ignore him, he just pathetic metaslave clown, everyone hate him
I love how the biggest shield hater is the person that needs shield the mostπ
how is layla worst than rosaria/chongyun in yoimiya team
Shield TAX? Theorycrafter now put economic politics in game lmao, this isn't theorycrafting anymore this is bullshit crafting, can't even enjoy playing game anymore π€£
213 meme perfect wanderer mains came and watched this video to leave some dislikes lmao. The irony

You're as gar**ge as your takes tenten.
