The Problem With Genshin Impact's Characters

Hey everyone! I got something a little different this week. Instead of a Why NO ONE Plays episode, I want to spend some time talking about Genshin Impact’s Characters, and the potential problems that might show up in the future as the game continues to update.

  1. 10:00 the main reason we are mostly getting inazuma characters instead of mondstat is because Mihoyo is trying to even the character pull. Similar to the xiangling being the only polearm from launch.so i dont think they erase mondstat from either possible New characters or lore.

The second part i want to discuss is the characters following their elements too faithfully part. Each element are connected to their archon. Although there are some outliers, in the end they still fit very well. Mihoyo may be the embodiment of a box of problems, at least they make really good character designs.

Powercreep is a common issue that most games have, and that includes genshin. However, theres nothing stoppin Mihoyo from changing or adding New things without nerfing strong characters.

  2. For me i see 2 problems that seem totally amateurish.
    1. Elemental reaction and resonance are totaly unbalanced and not orginal.
This is core mechanic and if core is broken this will lead to accumulating problems.
For player this limit comps, for dev. this make character balancing an diversification so much harder.
    2. After over tuning some old char. they do opposite now.(was mentioned but more details)
Sarra as a example do only 2 thing (dmg and att buff) that Bennet do (he do 5 dmg, att buff, resonance, heal, cleanse) and she do better only 1 thing(att buff) on Raiden and with c6.
Moreover only 10% better and she have worse up time and more difficult to use and she is worse for any other electro char.
Given that only truly good team for Riden is national make this worse.
After Ayaka all new characters have the same problems to some degree.
    3. As a bonnus because they are stingy with mats and primo problems are more pronounced , if you as f2p work 1/4 – 1/3 of a year for one char this hurt especialy bad if they are no good.

  3. Xinyan isn't a popular pick because of her defensive properties, it's because her kit just isn't good. Xinyan's kit is not based on making a shield either. Rather, her focus is as a physical DMG DPS which does not work with her element. She is a Physical DPS and not a defensive unit. Sort of like Beidou who creates a "shield" but she is still an offensive type.

Another point I'd like to add is your take on artifacts on 5:54 about characters being unable to fully maximize their kit outside of their elemental archetypes due to their artifacts. The hydro domain however focuses on DMG as well even though the hydro archetype is healing as you mentioned.

Lastly, as many have mentioned already, I also believe that genshin handled powercreep pretty well so far. You brought up Kazuha and Sucrose as an example of powercreep in Genshin but it really isn't. Genshin Impact's gameplay now trends towards characters fulfilling specific niches, such as Sara as a Raiden support or Kokomi as an overheal tank. With the introduction of heavy Inazuma enemies, Venti's power becomes more niched but still very powerful in his own aspect. Kazuha and Sucrose each have their own niche and while Kazuha does out damage Sucrose on his own as a 5* unit, Sucrose still does shine in certain areas as well. which is not powercreep. Sucrose is still very much used in abyss, she has not fallen out of the meta just because a new character is introduced.

  4. I find the newer bosses less difficult (in terms of raw HP or power, as with Floor 12), but they are more strategic to play. Since you can't just face tank them to win, once I find the rhythm of their gameplay, I actually have more fun. Azhdaha is my favourite weekly boss to grapple with. Also, now that I have discovered what the heck I need to do, the new hound boss is pretty fun too. I'm here for similar strategic play in the future 🤔

  5. The reason why people are skipping banners is because of the absence of powercreep. Ganyu and Bennett are examples of broken units that will always be relevant and top tier unless they are powercrept.

One thing I don't understand, is why the new 4 stars are underwhelming compared to existing ones. Why is Thoma not as versatile, and why is Sara so bad at buffing while Bennett just heals and provides a lot better buff at the same time? Sayu is cool but I'd say she was made for exploration. Gurou seems promising as he'll have a use case in his teams.

    Let's see.

  6. i would love for mhy to add like a mini quest for each character of something so that end game player would have something to do for now i.e, maybe defeat 5 enemies with hutao's blood blossom or something like that. could be fun imo

  7. Sorry, watching this video and your Kokomi video, I don't think you are well informed enough about the Genshin meta to support your argument. I highly recommend you to watch Tenten's explanation on Kokomi's new meta team Sukokomon that simultaneously reacts 4 elements at the same time to see the potential of Genshin's elemental system.

Unlike the vast majority of gacha games where characters are just cards with stats, Genshin is an actual action game that has real time interactions and skill floor and ceilings. Just doing numbers isn't the main thing that determines damage, the properties of each elemental skill/burst, their type, rate, aoe etc. decides how damage is generated and there are countless ways for the devs to add and change up the game.

Coming from a fighting game background, something like Sukokomon that is seen as complex execution by Genshin players is literally entry level in fighting games, which means there's a huge potential for future characters to introduce reactions and combos into the game. And we're only talking about single elemental characters, the story already introduced multiple instances of multielemental wielding characters, which the devs could easily add to the game in the future. Artifacts and weapons can also change how characters function, e.g. Elegy makes Amber the meta support for Hu Tao with Elegy buff and pyro resonance, the Clam set makes Qiqi a strong support for Eula.

As long as there are no two characters that has exactly the same properties, they would offer unique reactions and combos base on their builds and how their elemental applications work.

  9. first of a maxed character stoping at 90 lv. a very wierd place so close to 100
i belive all characters will be able to evolve furture and become more than what they had ben simply a big upgrade
but surely this upgrade will have its price
mc could use more elements at the same time
and one example childe could use the electro element whit new skills
    what du u guys think?

  10. Well for starters, there are more than a few total misconceptions in this video. And while most of them have a common cause name behind it being that there's just way too much importance put onto the meta-viability aspect of the characters in the game that has virtually no end game content besides Spiral Abyss that can be cleared with 4*s, there are a few individual nitpicks that are minor to major wrongs that long time players pick up on.
For one, Thoma not fitting the "Pyro = Damage = Not played as shielder". Thoma is not not-picked up on because he is a shielder, but because of the ratios. They are abysmal. With a higher ratio and not clunky pyro application he could easily be an alternative to Xiangling. And Xinyan has on the other hand conflicting ratios. Why play a character that is only half effective with their kit when there is something who uses their full kit with one direction of buildpath?
Point #3, specifically with Kazuha, someone is forgetting that Kazuha is a delight to play. True, he does a lot, but so does Venti, if not better in some aspects, but Kazuha has the design polished well enough to easily fit into the rotation with other characters and to mesh with them. He's not doing that much more than Venti or Sucrose does and they often achieve the same thing. It's the small aspects like the jump-dive of his E that ties very nicely to other things that makes him preffered over others.
And point #5 is just straight up wrong. MiHoYo is quite apparently taking a step against powercreep and instead focusing on niche. Not to mention there's that underlying nudge towards Liyue having the strongest characters as a China representation of a Chinese game.
Also. Since Ganyu there was not one character that was an insta win button. Xiao being required? Since when? Ayaka? Eula? What exactly were they a must-have for? That one patch rotation of Abyss that was tailor made for them? Laughable. And have you heard of National team? You can get any of the 5*s that are semi decent and be absolutely fine. Hell, you can be absolutely fine running only 4*. There's nothing for them to be required for.

All in all it's a great video, and a good take. If nothing else, it's a good discussion point.

  11. I hope that instead of just "stronker karacters" they instead choose to create different playstyles and even weapons. The bow/polearm/sword/claymore/bow system will get old pretty quickly and there's only so many fighting styles that you can put in the game. New weapons would bring new playstyles maybe without the powercreeping, or at least it'll mitigate it. Look at the Fatui, Childe is a double dagger fighter, there are brawlers and gunners among the fatui as well…

  12. I feel like we will be introduced to lvl 100 characters and weapons if a “secondary awaken” like in summoners war was implemented then powercrept can be saved additional multipliers and additional passive abilities can help. Maybe like epic 7/dragalia lost they could add their version of artifacts/wrymprints (with element and weapon lock) there’s actually quite a few ideas to make older characters catch up before sneznhya, and they’d be stupid not to do it and make it f2p friendly.

  13. I kinda hope they come out with a like super version of them and give some in game BS reason you could unlock their potential. and i hope they balance around that whenever "end game" content comes out.

  14. This is something I've thought much about it! And it doesn't help that whenever a new character is announced, people start comparing them to Liyue's big three (Ganyu, Xiao & Hu tao) as well as Mondstadt from time to time. "Itto isn't itto, but is he better than the other geo characters? Shenhe isn't just Shenhe, but wow Ganyu's mutlipliers are so much better why would you want the new character. Yoimiya is a cheap single target Hu Tao, now that Baal's released nobody wants Keqing" and so on. When Thoma got released, simping aside, it was just a breath of fresh air to see a pyro unit not be used as a dmg dealer. I followed his beta and leaks every single day (I was REALLY excited for him kay) and it was almost a given that people are gonna be able to do massive numbers with him and have him do insane dmg. I even saw people speculating he could replace Xiangling or be a pyro xingqui only for him to not be like that at all. Now with Shenhe on the way in less than a month and her being very support focused at it seems, while I am not interested it's another step to a different type of character. It's sad how every new character has to go through this wave of "Shit dmg, not pulling community"

Additionally, I've thought about what the community and the characters are gonna look like in a couple years as well. Will you be sort of antique for maining a Mondstadt character?? We're in Fontaine and suddenly having an all inazuma team e.g is old school or whatever and then when we're in Snezhnaya who knows what else they can bring. Giving every single character a complete overhaul with another skill or even passive in 3.0 or 4.0 would be something that would make the playerbase realize old doesn't mean bad and weak and on top decrease the possibility of copy-pasta. We currently have a lot of unique features and things characters can do, but only time will tell until Mihoyo works on a character one day and has to realize "oh…well our possibilities aren't endless any longer" and characters become useless to consider pulling for – or they make them powercrept so meta fans feel the need to pull for them.

I personally can see myself still maining Childe and Albedo, both "early game" characters as well as always have Kazuha in my team. I'm pretty sure one day there'll be a character with two weapons once again like Childe, Geo Traveller as well as Keqing can already control and put down their E in a certain direction like Albedo and Kazuha was even labeled a 5-star sucrose before he came out.

This comment turned super long, but the topic's so interesting. This is one of those things I want to go back to when it's 2024/2025 (and I'm way too old for this game then) and see what characters they came up with. Will Hu tao, Ganyu and Xiao will be replaced like Diluc e.g ? Will Genshin have an end ?
