Power Creep in Genshin is Greatly Exaggerated

Power Creep in Genshin Impact is something that comes up on occasion yet rarely actually happens in huge jumps. This is especially surprising for a game entirely driven on selling you new characters. I mean they’re all pretty cool, they don’t need to be OP to sell, it certainly doesn’t hurt though.

  1. One way Hoyo seems to make new characters interesting to pull for is their creative design. Past characters are more simple, easy for players to learn so as to get into the game with ease. And as the time passed, more creative play styles are introduced to add interest and diversity, ganyu, kazuha, xiao, yelan, wanderer etc, instead of simple hack and slash characters, which there are already plenty of. Players that are still looking to improve in power will choose meta units, while players that already consistently 36 star abyss will start looking to pull for fun characters (but not as broken as meta), which recently there's been a lot of. This avoids powercreep pretty effectively (as old characters are honestly still relevant, mona, jean, keqing etc still very much OP and useful in right teams) I love how Hoyo is going with this!

  2. Is there Powercreep? IMO no but taking a step back I think it would depend how u see it. Overall I think no because everyone has their usage in their own way that one can’t do. The part where it could be power crept is how some characters can do what the other can but better BUT again this depends on how someone sees it and how they use the characters.

An example is Ganyu and Ayaka. Both are great for freeze teams and can dish out great DMG, but one is close range and the other is far range and depending on the situation one can be better than the other.

  3. What power creep? Very, and I mean this literally, VERY few characters are unusable, arguably less than a handful, and of all the characters the mass majority is viable in team comps,

Characters that are weaker still substitute for more "expensive", rarer options etc

The nature of team comps, team building, and character builds directly counteracts most forms of powercreep in characters

In conclusion yes it's massively overexaggerated

  4. Okay I see you go diluc isn't S tier, and characters get sales because they're so much better

Your investment in a character f2p or not, directly affects how good they are

Some characters DO objectively have higher ceilings for potential, but the level at which a character can be competitively viable is really low, and some sets literally shred with any character (minus aloy)

You can invest or use team comps to make up for what you're character lacks, functionally every character is always usable to an extent,

xiao gets sales and I'm 100 percent sure people didn't buy him because they thought they'd get the highest numbers

They know they CAN get high numbers, and like xiao enough to invest in him.

This goes for every character in the game

  5. Signature Weapons in Genshin will prolly take years to reach the level of obscene powercreep that something like Honkai has. When they dropped that new sword and HoT went back to being the best lightning unit or how 6.3 is giving Eden a PRI-Arm that'll give the ability to cross over from Strict Support to possible DPS defo overshadows anything a signature weapon in Genshin will do even at R5

  6. Power-creep is not what people should be worried but instead the new enemy lineups. Hoyo will release new enemies that can counter specific roles or teams, and tends to gradually proliferate it on the Abyss to shake-up our comfort team comps that we use.

  7. The real power creep is on level design. Sumeru is so more beautiful and vast than other areas that I'm really excited for the last area they make. The jump from mond/liyue to inazuma and then enkanomiya and chasm was already a great pace, but sumeru was out the charts.

  8. i still dont get the crying abt powercreep in terms of powerscaling. Like bruh the dps cap for hardest content (abyss) is still doable with units we deem "bad" with enough investment and team building. The only reason you'd wanna use the stronger characters is to clear faster than 3 minutes which isn't necessary at all, u can just play whoever you want, why bother about damage when most ppl be advocating waifu > meta whenever someone complains a character isn't strong enough lol. To top it off, we have no competition in this game so it's not even p2w to have the most meta c6 r5 characters so why cry abt a character being broken at c0

  9. I love what they've been doing with more niche character design, but I can imagine newer players might not agree. If your first 4* characters are meant to be specific supports for certain 5* characters (Sara, Gorou and now Faruzan, for example) and you don't have any of those characters, then your early game is gonna be VERY difficult, if not impossible. I also feel it's also easy to forget how brutal early game can be and how some characters (coughcoughxiangling) are kind of useless during early game because good luck getting 200%+ ER with your 3* artifacts and weapons, or getting enough crit rate to reliably proc that R1 Fav Bow you get for clearing story because you can't get refines for it at all. And unfortunately every character that can ignore ER because their main kit is focused on only their skill, is a 5*. Or Fischl.

I just wish they'd do a little more with Acquaint Fates, and maybe allow more pulls on the beginner banner so people have a higher chance of getting 1 or 2 of those broken patch 1.0 4*s to carry them through the game.

  10. I c6 a lot of my 5 stars and play mostly in coop since there's no content and ofc I don't get my usual team buffs there but i gotta say all of them end up doing about the same amount of damage, these power creep doesn't exist

  11. The new players are so screwed. Many of the banners we get include characters that can't be upgraded until inazuma or sumeru. I really think it's time to have a banner for each city at the same time. So we always have an option no matter where we are in the story.
Power creep isn't happening but story gaited upgrade materials will eventually become prohibitive to new players.

  12. I'ma just say this now but the 1.0 4stars are some of the biggest mistakes in video game design I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Try describing their kits to ANY D&D DM and watch them have an absolute aneurysm as they try to figure out what amount of crack the devs were on when they designed their kits. Yet people think that sort of design is the direction the game should always be taking, but in the same breath will also say how they don't want powercreep? Face it, if they stuck to designing characters like they did with the 5 abominations in 1.0, we'd have a ton of powercreep and it would have happened much faster than even over in honkai, and that's a game where we get powercreep basically every other patch 😂

Also "ganyu by herself can probably do as a good as a fully fleshed out razor party" I'ma have to stop you there captain. While I understand what you're trying to say, there's absolutely no way ganyu shooting slow ass arrows (mind you, with no shield you're gonna be dodging way more which equates to 0 dps in the case of ganyu) where as a team for razor will have multiple outlets of damage triggering. Kind of a really dishonest take to be having ngl. Couple that with the fact that ganyu isn't even that good these days and it just seems like hyperbole almost. Also Tartag was always better than her so people getting concerned about powercreep with her despite a much better character already releasing before her is just kinda hilarious.

  13. I don't think power creep is a planned thing in Genshin like it is in other games. Instead, there was a re-evaluation as to what it means to be a five star or a four star character, and so we have characters that fall into two categories, pre-Ganyu and from Ganyu on. The pre-Ganyus are where the five stars are mostly weak, and there are some crazy powerful four stars. The Ganyu ons mostly do about the same DPS, if they are a DPS character, and, if they are a four star support, will do crappy DPS.
