On section 6 (which is contentious, ik)
Genshin before has claimed to only take inspiration and from real life and claim not to be representative of such people/events
I personally think the use of Dehya and Al Haythum is unnecessary as it blurs that 'line in the sand' they ruled out.
I think the Devs at hoyoverse don't seem to notice how bad some of it may be-
There's arguments to be made about 'The Persian empire having a wider range' etc but I'd prefer to scrutinize them on points that contradict what they ruled out. It's a bit yikes, but not outright incriminating.
I wish there was more POC in Genshin but that's not what they set out as a clear cut goal. Ideal if it were, but they never set out with that intent- so they shouldn't be crucified primarily for someone else's expectations, even if it's seen as ''''right'''' (which is a can of worms)
Sorry to sound ranty or anything, I just like trying to set as unbiased a perspective as I can. Hopefully the can be more aware culturally- but then again, they're from a different culture entirely.
In the end, just reminding people to separate fiction and reality usually helps avoid unintentional biases ig
(Phew…that's it.)
As an f2p that never spent money on any games
I'm AR 56 and I have done everything I could've to get primos before, now I have nothing to do, pretty much the only way I can get primos is by daily commissions, spiral abyss, new character story quest and events
If I want a 5 star character I would have to save for months to actually get one and even in that I would need to WIN the 50/50
And I'm not sure if I should farm for the character before because if I don't get them the resin would be wasted, and maybe I wanted to build another character
And if I get them and don't farm, it would take me days to build them
Like, I wish we had ways to get resin without waiting
Maybe doing some quests like daily commissions and getting like 20 per quest
Thank you for speaking about the colorism in genshin. The amount of pushback I've seen just because darker skinned people want to see themselves represented in a game just as much as other people is honestly so disgusting to me and kinda further alienated me from interacting with the fanbase. Although racism/colorism is pretty known to be rampant in the anime fanbase in general, I'm not so much surprised and thoroughly disappointed.
I dont have a problem wirh the vurrwnt gacha system its way better than the most gachas I played tbh.
Lexy I swear I love you and your videos so fvking much. /gen I love how you’re not scared to talk about ‘political/controversial’ topics on your channel and I just feel seen/appreciated by you mentioning it :’) ur absolutely amazing <3 as a SWANA/MENA person sumera has disappointed me super badly
Not to mention dendro archon outfit looks like a damned euro Celtic fairy
thank you for talking about this! i started playing genshin for lore and got hyperfixated on its lore but i haven't played in months simply because it bored me so much. nowadays i keep up with the lore and theories via youtube channels like yours
honestly in regards to leaks i don't find them being bad
I am daily checking the leaks specifically for characters and their kits but also new system/mechanical changes
like in sumeru knowing that there will be an option to gamble for a vv set by recycling my shitty artifacts allows me to save up lots of artifacts
I don't know a single story spoiler and like I said I watch leaks daily, I've seen a few locales but honestly, it ain't that special "been there done that" type of deal and luckily I myself enjoy more in-the-minute details of things rather than the whole picture
I've seen how the characters look what weapons they use/vision they have and heard how some of them function and that allows me to save my 2 months of grinded guaranteed 5* star character that I want
mihoyo is playing dirty and honestly I wouldn't call leaks being dirty they can't even balance the playing field just save a tiny bit of grind/stress and hassle
you articulated the main problems of this game so well thank you!
thank you so much for making this video ! this game is amazing, yet it has a ton of problems. the artifact system makes you want to rip your hair out sometimes. the game has a gambleing problem for sure, but with it being a gacha game i can’t see them changing anything but maybe give us more free primogems or give late game ar 50 players and above more things to do and earn higher rewards. at least let us do a 10 pull like sheesh. they are very greedy. money IS the best way to get primogems which sucks.
okay as for sumeru. i love their outfits and the environment is beautiful! breathtaking…but this was the chance to do something beautiful and why does it have to be region locked! i don’t understand. i know a ton of poc people who live in france, germany, and the uk. i know a ton of people who have moved to america and it’s awesome! but genshin, i have no words for hoyoverse anymore.
i thought sumeru would finally be the chance to see what we have know, but also some light and darker brown skin characters. all living in the same city- and the fact they dipped into indian, egyptian, and even a bit of northern africa….with the names, clothes, music- where is it in these characters?
i’m very concerned! dehya and cyno have tan skin and they look more egyptian than the other characters. i don’t want them divided by the rainforest and desert. it feels like segregation to me personally. i hope isn’t Nahida’s intentions. She doesn’t need anymore hate than she’s already getting right now. my last hope is natlan, but who knows how that will turn out. i feel like people will be this mad but worse. I hope hoyoverse can learn from their mistakes.
I agreed with a lot of the colorism part of the video as a south Asian man I’d like to see darker skinned characters in Genshin and the people who say that Kaeya and xinyan aren’t shown in a bad light because of their skin tone have less ground since one of the new characters who is dark skinned dehya is the leader of a mercenary group the emerites who are also gonna be enemies like treasure hoarders
In my opinion when it comes to things like leaks, the only thing I see as acceptable is sharing the looks of new playable character and MINOR details about them, and by minor details I then mean only things like what weapons they use and nothing more.
Yesterday, I was thinking your pp is old now and Wow! You changed it today! This one looks so nice! 😌❤️
Haven't watched the video yet but will do and comment again.👋
👍
Why is it always white people who feel the need for other people to be represented? Im mexican and Ive never felt the need for people of my particular skin colour to be represented or not, as long as the characters look cool and are fun to play. I mean why is it that, them wanting to paint the characters black or white, the first thing that comes to your head when talking about this games issues, when in the real world there arent people running around with elemental abilities attacking eachother? Its just weird…
Also, the idea that someone doesnt like the new Sumeru characters because they dont look like their real world counter parts is completely ridiculous, given the fact that literally 90% of the cast in Mondstat, Lyue and Inazuma also dont like their real world counter parts (they all literaly look like anime cute boys and girls). If that was such a big problem then why didnt you make that one of your main points from the very beggining?
Dont get me wrong, I dont blame you for touching on this topic, but I feel like the only people who preach about the game having less darker skinned characters are the same people who go on Twitter and harass artists, because they didnt draw the characters the way they like
At the end of the day, Genshin IS just a game. Just because someone likes it more than other games, doesnt mean that you can now act all grand and mighty and pretend that this random anime game was specificaly designed to make a bigger statement on how each region should perfectly represent their real world counter parts
I completely disagree with everything you just said. There are easy solutions for all these problems!
Honestly I think everyone is old and capable enough to hold themselves off at looking at story leaks. If you only want the character leaks just don't click on the story leaks I mean they even get spoiler tagged on reddit. It's clearly hoyoverse's fault for accidentally making the dev kit public.
First and last time in this channel, Retard take on everything. NPC Mentality!!
Bestie, I’m sorry but if you can’t clear abyss after 1.5 years… that’s on you
Donate to planned parenthood?!!! You are really an NPC!!
I disagree with the colorism part. I myself am arab and I absolutly love what they're doing with sumeru. Represntion isn't just in skin color of the character, the music and landscape I'd argue are more important and so far both of those imo are 10/10 the music sounds and is arabic. And how are the characters stereyotpical? Its a fictional game that of course will take inspiration from mythology and fiction of the culture they're represent. Most POC I see on twitter say that the argument is stupid, but once you start debating your point they call you " hyv defender ". Also most arabs are white and tan.
Sorry to tell you, but Dislyte doesn’t have an official release in china, nor a fanbase of any note worthy capacity. Since Mihoyo’s main focus is Asia, they don’t need to worry about skin tone that much ( especially when the ccp does not like dark skinned people portrayed in good light ). Now Dislyte is marketed towards the west, and solely for the west, and since they don’t have a CN server the ccp won’t bother them. Again, you can look at both games and see for yourself, Dislyte is popular in the west and has no presence in east asia, while Genshin’s new designs are very popular in east asia. Simply put, each game is focused on a different audience, which is why Mihoyo won’t be pressured too much to change, especially when the money keeps rolling in. As a last point, a lot if players for the CN and other servers also complained about the designs of characters ( both new ones and old ), but Mihoyo doesn’t listen to them either, and honestly, why would they when they keep getting money from the players.
:,(
Super whale 🐳 here. A c6 five star on average is 1200 dollars but most of mine are from about 600 usd worth of wishes and getting lucky. I have about 10 c6 five stars and 10 r5 5 star weapons and I work as a stocker at a grocery store. The trick besides money is to skip banners, work overtime if you want to do stuff like whale, and most importantly get lucky. If you have the worst luck imaginable , then yes it can cost as much as she said lol 😂. That said normally I hit a character on average at 55 pulls on my account based on my data.
That said I will make this very clear. Don’t c6 r5. Nothing is worth it and nothing will require it EVER. The rewards for some of the hardest stuff is like 4 enhancement ore in the recent event. If you are going to whale in this game just go for a copy of characters and have fun with them. You will thank me in the long run. I honestly have a hard time caring for any new characters when I can beat abyss in 30 seconds and anything twice as good would take me to 15 when I got 3 minutes to beat it. Have fun, and learn from someone who made the mistake after getting lucky to hit c6 at low amount of money spent. Most of sumeru I can’t really care about since nothing challenges what I have and better characters will be out as time goes on so I should just wait for the creep to keep going for awhile.
combining so many different cultures is ignorant and disrespectful. and why is that exactly? when they did it before it wasn't offensive but now it is because oh we can call people racist and have something to be pissed about. guess what. we don't care. i live in middle east and i have many friends from different countries like india and iraq and none of us are talking about such trivial matters because seeing alHaytham wearing a turban would be kind off putting honestly. 😂
all and i mean all of your reasonings are so idiotic it's funny. "xinyan and kayea have darker skin tones but that doesn't mean they have dark skin" this is giving me a brain aneurysm. "and they are portrayed as untrustworthy or dangerous" what are you even on about? xinyan is looked down upon by society because of her rock and roll outfit and music and kaeya is just our beloved scheming kaeya. but sure let's pin that on their skin color and the developers being racist.
sumeru has great music ' landscape and characters based on our cultures and countries. just seeing an npc with the name amir was such a cool thing to see for me and my friends and we don't need you people to get angry and talk on our behalf. i have an advice for you and all of the twitter white knights. grow the hell up.
The culture of people demanding diversity, just for the sake of diversity. This is one of the current culture that I least understand.
I'm from Indonesia. I know that it's not my place to talk about discrimination because of skin colors for I've never experienced it once before. Although I do experience some other form of discrimination, but that's not the point.
Honestly, I don't feel a need to be "represented" by anything ever. For Sumeru's case, I can't help but scratch my head. People should learn the difference between "Inspiration" and "Representation". Hoyoverse DOES NOT create the game to represent whatever culture that exist in the world, but they are merely inspired at those. And inspired works are allowed to be slightly different to what they're inspired to.
I draw from time to time, and I would HATE it if people tell me to draw something to represent something that is convenient to them. I want to create whatever I like.
Honestly, again, this whole diversity fiasco, not only in Genshin Impact looks ridiculous to me. Very, very ridiculous. I can't even think of a worse word to describe it. 😔
Video was good until min 13 and went to shit
Some corrections
You don't need to spend money on anything, I'm ar 58 100% f2p and I've gotten all the characters I've wanted by saving up for them, 7 limited characters (excluding Aloy), the 5 standard and a few weapons, I'm not super lucky on banners, I generally get 5* from 75-78 pity.
Also spending money doesn't guarantee you better artifact drops, just more drop chances.
I'm at a fairly decent difficulty, I may not be able to 36* abyss, but I can clear fl 12.
It's a little bit difficult, not too difficult, I quite like where it's at. The Abyss shouldn't be easy, it's supposed to be somewhat of an endgame, so it should be hard. Spending for c6 r5 makes it too easy, just go talk to whales, who know how to play, they'll tell you to not spend because it makes the game too easy, cause they've paid their way out of any difficulty.
I think the colorism issue is mostly a loud minority, mostly Twitter people who complain about everything, but yet still play/support the game. I'm not against more darker skinned characters, I'll gladly accept more, but if we don't get a lot more, I'm not gonna complain either. But pegging it as this horrendous issue is a bit much. This game may be based of real life, but it is not obligated to reflect it. It's a fantasy game after all.
Also for your ayaka example you can actually get Inazuma characters to lvl 40, if you do the character trials, before reaching Inazuma not 20
I do agree with the part about keeping major lore points out of hidden events i.e. Albedo events and unreconciled stars, tho you can look it up, it's not the same as the experience
Natlan is going to be quite something…already has a bad rep for the dark-skinned characters native to it being taken into slavery. Why even do that? Seems pretty deliberate.
I’m all for representation, but I’m not going to lose sleep over Kusanali’s skin tone. She looks super cute and that’s enough for me.
Every clickbait YouTuber: “GENSHIN IS FAILING”
Actual reality: Genshin banner sales and revenue keep going up and breaking old records, meaning more and more players are getting on board.
I don’t think people understand what the word “failing” means.
Two things:
1) I’d probably change the title since you list a bunch of problems but conclude with “it’s not my job to fix genshin; I’m just a player.” — It kind of defeats the purpose of “here’s out to fix it” in the title.
2) I would like to say: be very wary of any community that describes themselves as “people of color”; mind you, not people who happen to have different color skin than the national majority but people who use that phraseology specifically. I have spent the last few years researching these people and they are not people who you really want to put much stock into. — It’s one thing to say “black people are having an issue that we think should be addressed” it’s entirely different to say “you’re not a person of color so therefore, your opinion means little or nothing at all on this issue since you could never understand our POC struggle.” Which is something that even you mentioned in the video. These kinds of people will entice want to be helpful people into thinking they’re fighting racism when in actuality all they are doing is establishing a racist narrative that quite literally demands racial mistreatment of everyone and silences voices of people based on their skin color. It’s establishing the racism is claims to want to dismantle.
Genshin is a Chinese game with an international focus; the obsession and almost fetishizement of skin color is a VERY American thing; almost entirely exclusive to us except for the unfortunate bits that have spilled into other countries. — therefore, to say that “genshin is having a problem because less dark skin people” and then suggest that a developer is racist because they don’t align with your understanding of something reveals a moral dilemma on your end, not theirs. As one fella from the middle I think on here suggested: there’s more to culture than just skin color. Sure characters may have lighter skin but they are using music, fashions, names, languages, customs, etc. inspired by those real world places. It’s not fair to say they are racist because you have an extremely limited view on race and culture.
It sounds like I’m trying to be mean but I’m actually not. I’m not saying these things to attack or hurt you but to warn you that I’ve seen the path these types of people will bring you down and it’s one of resentment, bitterness, and hatred and virtually all of it is arbitrary or artificial. I have watched friends go from sharing meals with me (a white man; to blocking me and not even talking to me because “I’m part of the problem”.
Lastly, I would say, Kaeya is treated the way he is because he is mysterious. He’s adopted and not from mondstadt; he’s at apparent odds with his brother and often goes out of his way to not let anyone in on who he is or what he’s thinking. It’s not because he’s brown; it’s because he’s deliberately making himself mysterious.
As for Xinyan; she’s not treated that way at all. She’s a rebel in a Chinese inspired country; that’s like that scene from back to the future when Marty guitar riffs at the prom; his music, fashion, and attitude were so contrary to the national culture that people weren’t sure how to respond to it. Her treatment is because she is a rebel and rockstar not because she’s brown. Once again, it’s the “POC” narrative artificially creating racial drama where there is none. Actually, funny enough going along with what I said earlier, as a white souther conservative male, I actually quite like Xinyan. She’s a rebel child with a country accent; those are my people! I’m from the south so I was delighted to have Xinyan boast a country accent! Haha
Adding endgame content.
Rising difficulty. Designing a better combat.
Powercreeping characters.
Better resin and artifact systems.
Very interesting video, as usual. I completely agree with you about leaks. What makes me also very sad/angry is that it's so difficult to avoid leak, as some Instagram accounts for example don't even tell you when there are leaks in their posts… Like .. i want to be surprises.
Thanks for the laugh
Why would there be change when genshin is continuing to have massive success? Sure a lot of stuff needs to be fixed, but even without all these qol fixes and endgame content, the game is still going strong after almost 2 years. Hoping for all these fixes is super copium at this point, and you might as well quit now before continuing disappointed again and again
Interesting Video and generally got all the bigger problems in it.
However there are just some problems that i dont think are as huge as some people think they are.
As @Animation Station mentioned in his own comment, the colorism issue is a loud minority.
(I also agree with him on the part that i am not against more skin tone variety in genshin.)
It is a loud minority that i hate very much, not because of what they are about, but from where in the internet that minority is.
Life would be so much easier not only for game companies but for everyone without this internet cancer called Twitter.
Like seriously?
I read through a few things on reddit and i fully agree with the people there.
I dont consider people that play genshin and tweet a lot part of the fanbase, because most of the people on twitter are (from my experience) just people that try to make it a world wide disaster if they dropped their toothbrush. And that is also the place where all these people are that believe their entire life depends on Star Signs or stuff like that.
These are the people that complain about sometimes serious, sometimes useless stuff and make some huge thing out of it just to get attention.
I used twitter for about a year and honestly once i deinstalled it my life became so much better.
No more completely brainless people everywhere. so nice.
And i assume that is also the place where all the leaks are happening.
If you dont wnat that stuff, just stop using twitter. As i said before, getting out of that mass of people that makes everyone loose about 50 brain cells a day really helps.
Back to the colorism issue.
I have some friends with a variety of skin colours.
And honestly, they and most people they know are just as annoyed as me about the twitter people.
Like yeah, its an issue but the game is from china, there is not that much variety there as far as i know.
And genshin is still (ok only my opinion, dont complain about this please) one of the best games i know. And if someone stops playing it over some of these issues then i guess they were not that much of a fan in the first place.
Or they are full-time twitter users. Cause those are the kind of people that make everything become some kind of apocalyptic scenario in their head.
And about the gacha system:
I have an 100% f2p account at adventure level 50.
Characters i got:
Yun Jin, Shinobu, Diona, Bennet, Yanfei, Xinqiu, Chnogyun, Ninguang, Aloy, Xiangling, Noelle, Sucrose, Diluc, Mona, Zhongli, Razor, Fischl
And my main party: Beidou (LV 90, C3), Rosaria (LV 80, C3), Yelan (LV 80, C1), Barbara (LV 80, C1)
The difficulty of the normal game is completely fine like this, upgrading more would make it boring.
And i do have good Artifacts, all 5 star LV20, substats are ok, not great, but i dont want to deal more damage as mentioned before.
I dont have an opinion on the spiral abyss as i only played it to Floor 3 room 3 to get Xianling.
As for the Story events:
I completely agree, those should be permanent.
Extremely good points, 10/10.
Another fun fact about gambling mechanics and kids: the younger they're exposed to it the more normalized it becomes and the more likely they are to develop gambling behaviors or a gambling addiction (based on research I had to do for my research methods class because this was my topic). Plus impulse control is much harder when you're younger so not only is saving more difficult, not getting the character you really REALLY want will feel painful so they might be more likely to spend.
I'm definitely not a fan of leaks, but now that I'm off of tiktok it's a lot easier for me to avoid them completely. I'll still look up the character leaks for their appearance (because I like knowing if I need to save or not) but other than that the surprise of it all is so much more fun! Although ignoring them and the leaks not existing in general are two very different things since creativity can and will be stifled. You can't really make a theory when all the information is already theoretically there. And what if eventually, Mihoyou decides they're tired of leaks and stops using beta testers for their games? Or uses only in house beta testers who aren't necessarily players?
I feel like with the event quests that have lore elements they should either back-pedal and add them into the main story or create a compendium of all events that locks your world from coop but allows you to play through the whole thing as many times as you want. Plus, if Mihoyo wanted to be nice they could allow us to get rewards the first time we play it from the compendium so players who missed things like dodoco tales or festering desire the first time around would be able to get them and players who already have them can get another copy for funsies (I would LOVE another copy of both of those). I loved it when dragalia lost added a compendium for all the old events, but I know it would be a little more difficult for genshin considering it's open world.
Artifacts are the main reason I don't feel as excited for new characters anymore (unless it's someone I'm obsessed with like Kokomi). Grinding is soul crushing and knowing that I won't be able to play them for so long makes it feel less worth it in the long run. If they made little changes like letting us pick which set we farm from the domain (or turning it into an every other day thing like other materials) it wouldn't feel as terrible because at least all of my garbage is from the same set! Or give us a funky alchemy system where we put the piece we're messing with in the middle and we can use up to 5 other pieces that have the main stat we want (each increases the 20% chance). Make it expensive! That'll still force us to grind to some extent but if you wind up with a healing circlet with perfect dps stats you don't have to feel SAD. Unless I'm doing it with a friend, I've given up on artifacts entirely and have opted for fully ascending and maxing out talents for all of my characters. Only then will I go back to grinding if they make no changes whatsoever. Hope everyone likes glad, wanderer, and noblesse cause that's ALL YOU'RE GETTIN.
Spiral abyss is another thing I've given up on in this game. 35 has been my best so far, but as of now I'm happy if I completely clear floors 9,10, and 11 and more or less just quit on 12. The time and effort the abyss requires isn't worth it for the rewards especially if you're not someone who enjoys hard combat.
I've got nothing extra to say about this section. I'm not surprised but I am disappointed. I'm planning to keep bringing this up in the surveys (let em know you're not going to spend money if they won't address the issue. Maybe they'll listen :b) and stop spending what little bit of money I put into this game. Combined with the artifact issue and the fact that we NEVER have any excess materials because of how precious resin is, it's not like I'll be happy trying to build them anyway.
Mihoyou really needs to create some kind of shopkeeper in mond or Liyue that sells specialties from Inazuma, or even allow us to use the weird salt that transforms crystals on talent materials so new players have the ability to use new characters. And if they're worried that the shopkeeper would be unnecessary after getting to the region, then take them out when the region is unlocked. Besides, the pharmacy sells violet grass, some kid in the wilderness sells valberries, there's at least some type of precedence for people selling region specialties. But yeah, running out of stuff to do sucks. I'm trying to level up Kujou Sara without exp books and that's one of the only things that gets me to play longer than just dailies and resin. I don't think I'll ever fully stop playing but if I somehow manage to get every single achievement and Kujou Sara to level 90 without exp books, that'll be it for me. If you don't have multiple stupid goals, you really run out of stuff to do.
Skin color is down to genetics and exposure. It's not culture. I'm white because my parents were white, not because I wear jeans and tee shirts and celebrate Octoberfest and St. Patrick's Day. Your goals are not Hoyo's goals, likewise your priorities. If you want a knife, buy a knife. Don't complain because they gave you a free fork.
The last thing we need in the middle east(and Asia), is another western girl to get offended for us. it's a game and we are happy to see they use our culture and history as a source of inspiration.
Leaks aren't that big of a deal. Story and even area footage leaks are easily avoided if you don't look at it. Even the Genshin leaks Reddit hides story spoilers, just don't click it. I've seen more of Sumeru from the official trailers than from leaks.
the colorism part is really not that big of a deal and some things don't make sense. If you say that enka is okay for mixing japan and ancient greece, why is sumeru not okay? The two figures you just stated ar also historical figures, not today's figures, so they are not offending anyone, except you maybe but you have no right to be offended OR vouch for other and put things in their mouth. The only offended persons are on twitter and just want fame by being toxic and irrevelant so people look at them. I'm arab and my arab friends love sumeru, how the characters looks and they don't care for representation cuz it's just a game, not a history book. aaaallll fictional baby, Getting mad over dehya or al haitham isn't gonna do anything cuz they aren't real.
Genshin gives a fairer gacha and pity system then any other big gacha game going, and it provides more daily and endgame content then most gacha games as well. Players of other gacha games would KILL for the amount of frequent updates and events that Genshin gets. This whole video screams a lack of awareness of the genre. Gacha games are about limited events, repetitive gameplay loops/farming via daily play sessions, and character rolling. They're not going to change a tried and true system (which is fairer than practically all of their major competitors) because of vocal minority in the Western audience who wants the game to be more like an MMORPG and cater to their minor hangups. The game is definitely not 'failing' by any stretch of the imagination.
Most Arabs are religious, and believe me, they don't care about the color issue. As long as you don't insult their religion. (We are brothers from India to the last place in Africa) The game is fine let's have fun.
Error 404: constructive criticism or solutions to „fix the game“ cannot be found. At all.
Btw: HoYo is a company, not an NGO. They made this game to make money, not to just be nice and friendly.
Jeez. I was waiting for the idiot child to say something only an idiot child would say. Of course you jumped into representation, feminism, and "hoyo so wayciss". It's a Chinese gambling simulator for children with an anime veneer, and you want representation on it? You've never travelled, I'm willing to bet at all, but never to a non-western nation. Public education has failed us all.
