and that's why I love games that touch deep into cultures and mythologies
I can play, have fun and still learn about something that interests me
Just gunna leave this fact here.
77 is soft pity.
I hope he will be a guest more often! And I hope you will show him cn versions as well, especially with zhongli, because Chinese has a lot of meaning in very few words and that’s hard to translate in English. Translating 天动万象 (cn version of “I will have order”) which I think is more heavy and poetic will take a couple of sentences, and a lot of English speakers don’t really get how amazing and ancient it is. Loosely translated – if eh does something, the world will follow according to his will – like he can rearrange the world if he pleases – everything in the world will bow before him . It’s so badass because he speaks in proverbs so he tells these in very few words.
Amazing Phil love your video more than usual, thanks for inviting your friend who is very knowledgeable not only in chinese language but also its context and culture. I learned A LOT!! Not only in terms of meaning but also deepen my understanding of the characters' creation intention, lore and its hidden messages. Damn, I never thought gacha games can have complexity to its story and messages to us audiences… just awesome. Invite him next time as well Phil.
Incredibly interesting i have to say!
When you looked at Xiao one more thing that they nailed was the "Yaksha are created beeings" part.
In Genshin they were created by Morax (Zhongli) to protect Liyue.
I think its so awesome that the characters and their names meaning fit so well together.
Really well thought out.
There actually are some Liyue characters with Chinese dubbed official demos available in Youtube like Yunjin and Shenhe, Genshin Impact started their Chinese channel during Inazuma and so only character demos released after Inazuma was introduced were put on YouTube. The others are on BiliBili. As a side note, the Korean and Japanese versions are also available on their respective channels from the start of Genshin. There are also videos on Liyue cuisine, inspiration for scenery, Liyue music and more. Lots of interesting behind the scenes documentaries or articles (such as those covering the design of Yunjin and Xiao).
On a different note, this was a fun watch! While I'm a native Mandarin speaker, many of the reactors and streamers on YouTube are not and it's fun to learn about the inspirations this Chinese team had and see how they bring their culture to the world!
This stream was so entertaining and informative! Both regards to the game and Chinese language learning. Ill definitely keep that ee to o trick (Ganyu) for pronunciation when I get around to learning the language. Would love more streams/content like this!
Amazing work
this is great
Amazing, I enjoy this video. He is really knowledgeful.
Idk if it was mentioned but all the Gods, the Archons, as have named which reflect demons of hell. Venti is Barbatos, Zhongli is Morax. Raiden is Baal l. Nahida is Buer. Furina is Focalor.
We don’t yet know the names of the Pyro and Cryo archons
白术 ( Baizhu ) is a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient
胡桃 ( Hu Tao ) as a term actually mean Walnut
烟绯 ( Yanfei ) the 2nd character is a term for a pinkish colour , typically associated with lady's makeup or when a lady blush
云堇 ( Yun Jin ) the 2nd character is actually a specific kind of flower colored white with purple strips
absolutly loved this video! Was so interesting to learn more! would be awesome to see more of this stuff (perhaps looking into Chongyuns Yang energy?)
turning around to see you in tingle cosplay with no context really got me
The kanji 神 can be pronounced as shin or jin or if it stand by itself you read that kami and it means "god", while the first kanji 原 can be read as hara or gen. There is a lot similairities between chinese and japanese, and 原神 if you translate from both to english the literal translation will be original god.
I think he didn't mention, but the word for clock(钟) is also the word for bell in Chinese. <– that is the significance of the bell for the funeral in the Archon's Quest.
To elaborate, attending someone's funeral is called 送终(Song Zhong), which literally means "final sendoff". 送 is the word for both send and gift, so giving a clock or bell is also 送钟, pronounced exactly the same way. Thats why in chinese customs we shouldnt gift clocks or bells.. Or we do, when we want to politely tell the other party to go die. 😅😅
Oooo a stream 🌟

Poor GaMing/Gaming
He is so knowledgeable! I would love to see his explanation on the videos more ! As a chinese speaker I still not fully understand all those deep meanings. I love the video! Keep it up 👍
One of the coolest genshin streams i've seen in a long time period. Would really really love to see more like this.
Xiao is also an instrument btw, it's a sort of flute. They often reference this. E.g. it's playing in his trailer.
Also there were so many cool words he just threw out that are actually in the game. It's so cool randomly hearing "skhanda". Nahidas attack applies the "seed of skhanda". Or him literraly being like "cloud retainer? so xianyun?" which is literally her humanized form which we are about to get in the next version.
Also i don't know what chat really meant but i thought by the story teaser about xiao they were talking about his "endless suffering trailer". Though it was cool to randomly go to the stove god scene.
Anyways, just a really sick stream for anyone who is into genshin lore i think 😀
We are Gaming now 🤭
Damn i loved this🙏😁
Amazing info, we know nothing is random in Genshin, what an amazing game
This was such a great idea for a video, I loved learning all the details 🙂 Hope to see more in the future ^^
yaoyao ‘s yao in Chinese actually means beautiful gemstone.
凝光,the 凝 is like converging and solidifying. So Ningguang is like solidified light or something similar.
Also for Keqing the proper pronunciation for 晴 is as the wiki says. The short flat tone one is these: 青(light green),清(clear),輕(light) and the one in the wiki is for 晴(sunny, clear weather),情(feeling) and 請(to request).
辛 is also used to mean spicy in 辛辣.
Also the Qixing(七星, seven stars) and Beidou(北斗 a star in the constellation) is like the constellation of big dipper.
Also about Gaming, his name is Cantonese, 嘉明 where instead of Jia Ming(the tone which is represented by a checkmark), its Ga Ming(the one represented by a ).
this might be interesting .. a look at the design of the game. The video link time position is set to the Design of Xiao which is followed by the Design of Zhengli

Why Genshin Impact is an Artistic and Technical Masterpiece
1:07:47 中文里他的名字叫“浮舍”,中文母语者能看出来这是有佛教气息的名字,(事实上“夜叉”就是佛陀的护卫者) “浮舍”的含义是,“(浮)生一刹,万般皆(舍),”意思是 人生不过是一刹那,我将为此舍去一切。
He should react to xianzhou stuff in hsr
Actually I think the characters on Zhongli's shield is either Da Zhuan 大篆or Xiao Zhuan小篆. They look quite symmetrical than a Jia Gu Wen 甲骨文 would have, and more character-like than a drawing-like.
