  1. Genshin Impact came out a day before my 22nd birthday. I was student teaching at a high school at the height of Covid back then. At the time, I was pursuing a bachelor’s in music education and every day of my student teaching came with a looming threat of Covid cases rising enough for my student teaching to be cancelled (therefore postponing my graduation). I remember my cooperating teacher playing Taylor Swift’s “22” as I came in for period 1 — where I taught 3 classes at the same time: music theory, ear training, and class piano (the sections for each class were 2-3 and students overlapped. But it was still as hard as it sounds). I sorta laughed bitterly, my birthday not feeling very special or important after having so many performances and quite special events cancelled for me due to Covid. I don’t know, I was always on edge and learned to put on a mask so to speak. But I was in pain as the rest of the world was. But of course moving forward as we all had to whether we wanted to or not. Okay, so I get home. I splurged and bought some nice sushi from the more expensive Japanese restaurant. Just for myself, takeout, laying on my couch by myself and enjoying one of my favorite foods. Afterwards I was on my phone, kinda getting bored of the puzzle games I had downloaded like sudoku or what have you. I went to the app store casually, and I stumbled across genshin impact. “Eh sure,” I said as I downloaded it. I liked the art style, the snapshots and such seemed pretty hip. It wasn’t like the thing that totally captivated me and improved my birthday or my life or whatever. But it definitely stuck with me more than other adventure mode games I’ve tried.

Fast forward to now, I spend hours on it trying to 100% regions. I’m definitely a completionist – but genshin almost forced me to be okay with not 100%-ing. That felt different to me. Knowing I could be so engaged to a game like this yet be able to show curiosity for it’s story and root for the MC etc. It was a slow burn, but I grew to love the game. It’s a game that may be frustrating at times, super enjoyable other times, and absolutely gorgeous all the time. And it all started cause I was bored on my birthday.

Fast forward into the future, given the trend of a new region releasing every year. I’m going to be a Doctor of Music when Khaenr’iah comes out. And knowing me, knowing how invested I am with Aether/Lumine, Dainsleif, mysteries that haven’t been uncovered yet, the rest of the archons, etc? Y’all best believe I’m going to be right here waiting with bated breath for Natlan, then Snezhnaya, then Khaenr’iah. Regardless of me eventually being this 27 year old, full on doctor in my field, academic nerd who’s been in music school for the last 10 years person I’ll be by the time this entire masterpiece of a story is divulged.

I’ll get to the end of this game, and think “huh. So glad I got bored that day”
