  1. This is basically sudoku. Cube with purple marker facing north = 1 / east = 2 / south = 3 / west = 4
    cube with rock on top of it has +4
    empty cube slot = 9
    sorry English isn't my main language

  3. I literally just solved it by thinking like this: make the west rotating cube point to west, north one to north, and so on. The logic worked but I doubt it was the intended one

  4. 1 "This is a very interesting Ruin machine indeed…"

    2 "…I shall assign a number to each of these cubes' positions. One shall be north,

    east shall be two. South three, and West, four…"

    3 "…Adding on another four for those cubes with floating stone slates on them

    gives us five through eight…"

    4 "…The sole empty position shall be nine, thus making up our nine-slotted

    puzzle…"

    5 "…The lights on the stones don't seem to mean much. In that case…"

    6 "Now then, let's try to make the sum of the numbers along the horizontal,

    vertical, and diagonal lines the same…"

    7 "And eureka, I've solved it! Well, that's another entry for my thesis…"

    8 "I should continue west and see if there are any other ruins."

    line 2 => lights point North = 1, East = 2, South = 3, West = 4
    line 3 => add 4 if the cube has a 'cap' slate above it ( North East, Centre, South, and South East ) cubes
    line 4 => missing West cube = 9
    line 5 => lights only indicate directional based value (all on or all off)
    line 6 => common maths puzzle – all sums for horizontal, vertical, diagonal lines are the same => centre must be 5, sums must be 15 – opposites are pairs that sum to 10 => (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), (4,6)

    since W cube = 9, C cube = 5 => E cube = 1; this matches the 'solution' okay so far – leaves ( 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 ) to be assigned
    the sum of the West side already has a 9
    thus the other 2 places sum to 6 which means we need to use ( 2, 4 )
    since the South side already has two +4 cubes the SW cube = 2 and thus the NW cube = 4
    diagonal rule means NE cube = 8 and SE cube = 6
    and the remaining S cube = 7 and N cube = 3
