Why Ayato's Damage Scales Off… HP? (Genshin Impact Gameplay Design Analysis)

Taking a look into why Kamisato Ayato’s damage bonus from the Namisen Stacks on his elemental skill, Kyouka, scales with his maximum HP rather than attack.

  1. I think this is more my brain trying to rationalize the situation than what was intended, but Ayato's skill encourages you to stand still (the super armor reinforces that) to attack, so maybe they wanted some HP to be built so you can stay alive.

  2. I really think the purpose of Ayato's Namisen stacks is to keep on testing/experimenting character designs for the future ones. They will slowly shift the trend of stats for characters since they are experimenting like I said. This is a bit spoiler but Yelan and Kuki Shinobu scales with Max HP as their main stat for dealing damage. Due to this, I thought of Ayato as the "experimental stage" for Yelan's kit.

Not just in stats, but also in character's kit. these days we've been getting more and more Flat DMG Bonus from weapons (Cinnabar Spindle) to characters (Yun Jin and Shenhe) and to artifacts (Echoes of an Offering). I can't explain it exactly how it works but it's like experimenting on progress. They create a concept and experiment with them.

edit: I also thought of Ayato as the middle point between HP and ATK scaling. I am expecting more character designs in future where two stats are beneficial and won't mess up a character's role. (RIP Xinyan)

  3. There’s also the possibility that dendro hydro reaction will give a temporarily max hp boost, since it’s actually fits the elements. Following the same train of thought the reaction between electro and dendro will give a boost in Em because Yae miko like Ayato has this out of nowhere scaling that doesn’t synergies with their kit. This theory would have further credibility if also Yelan and Shinobu have this type of scaling (susge) and thus it would be fitting if the last 4 new characters before the release of dendro have synergy with the new reactions…

  4. Still think the change to his 2nd passive is what make HP scaling on him bad, it used to be 3% of his HP would be added to his burst but then they changed it for an open world only passive pretty much

  5. Exactly why I like Ayato, unlike Yae Miko, Ayato feels like a better flushed out playable character than her – Yae Miko has so many issues, and alot of her potential is locked behind needing certain characters and constellations. I'm pulling for him right now, guaranteed and 66 pity. He'll be probably the first character I ever crown.

  6. My advice is to treat his HP scaling like a mini-bonus if you have it. Kinda like Yae Miko's EM scaling, you don't NEED to build her on EM, but it's a nice bonus to have. Ayato is the same, he's gonna get that dmg increase naturally, if you roll HP% substats then cool more damage, doesn't mean you have to aim ALL for hp

  7. i think the best way to treat this is a bonus that isnt recommended to focus on but isnt negligible either. its a nice bonus that cant be exploited to become extremely op through certain builds, keeping ayato good, but not overpowered, and i honestly like it this way

  8. I can't really agree with this. I understand your reasoning, but I think it's simply poor design to add a misleading gimmick to a character and then have that gimmick only resolve through constellations. If Ayato's C2 introduced the HP boost for his Skill alongside the MaxHP modifier, then it would make more sense, as it would broaden his capabilities in accordance to your dedication to roll for him. But this kind of tease is confusing on a base level, and becomes irritating when trying to optimize Ayato.
It kind of plays into the issue that characters become increasingly disjointed or unbalanced just for the sake of being different – like Shenhe being an ATK monster, but struggling to deal damage while also having overly restrictive support buffs, or Yae simply having nothing except pure damage to her kit, yet still underperforming. MiHoYo is becoming so afraid of any kind of buff becoming unintentionally overpowered, that they struggle to bring out characters that really leave a lasting impression. It has become less about "I wanna build a party around this new character", but more about "I'm waiting for a character to fit into this all-purpose 4* support crew". The last character that really warranted a new approach to team builds was Raiden Shogun by making mono-electro somewhat viable. But very few other 5* units have those qualities, and most of them are more than a year old by now.

  9. Honestly though, if hydro resonance was +HP% instead all hydro characters would get a boost instead of the current +incoming healing which doesn't even benefit Barbara and Kokomi.

  10. back in beta, his kit was different which caused an identitiy crisis, his 4th passive originally made his ult scale with his hp(also his burst granted atkspd that applied to everyone but himself) and his skill passively had its cd lowered when other characters used normal attacks while he was off field. His c2 meanwhile used to give him energy while off field but was changed.

I believe he was originally meant to be a subdps that you could stack hp on (like albedo but hydro and hp) but was changed later to what he is now

  11. I feel like the purpose of this HP scaling was for people who, like me, had a Jade cutter in their inventory but NO ONE to use it on. So I'm pretty happy about it, seeing that is his second best option 5 star wise.

  12. Anyway the split scaling in Ayato is really weird, at least in Noelle or Itto even the weapon add def and they scale of def really well while still taking atk and other stat but in Ayato HP is only 20% effective compared to traditional stat like atk or crit when it comes to damage which is not nothing but still not significant enough to matter

This made me looking forward to Yelan who scale 100% of HP but this time with traditional crit on top of it and not healing bonus like Kokomi

  13. And i think that we must also consider the fact that they created a « geo set » with a %def in it , which can be imagine for the futur of hydro with %hp because hp seems to be the core stats in hydro (kokomi, xingqiu, barbara, ayato, yelan) just like def is the core stat of geo (albedo, ito, gorou, noelle)

  14. Making Hydro resonance
Increase 15%/25%/30% of HP would make sense
Hopefully Hoyo would change useless hydro resonance to much more useful like they did to Geo

  15. my ayato build is solid however he hasnt been doing the best dmg. he can barely hit over 10k (without buffs). i have 79.8% crit rate and 200.8 crit dmg with 2k atk (21k hp) and i don’t understand why his dmg is so small ?
