  1. I've seen them as antagonists maybe Dragonspine and strongly since Enka. I dunno how them being bad is a new angle, the fact the archons being forced into it has been around since we were told they had to fight for seats and if they ran they got a death sentence, no participation and being a pacifist wasn't allowed.

The Fatui are anti heros, some are twisted as people but not the full organisation.

Likely once we have Celestia's perspective it won't be entirely evil that they nuke people or force people who don't wanna fight into wars. But as they are now all there is is a floating authoritarian place that nukes those who don't follow rules.

  2. While common, antagonists aren't necessary. Just conflict is required. Remember the 4 literary conflicts: protagonist vs. others, self, environment, or the supernatural. I like how Fontaine explored the second two kinds of conflict.

  3. I think the upsetting part of Furina's treatment is moreso how she is treated once the details are revealed, especially by the Traveler since they have the full context of Furina's feelings and her situation. The people of Fontaine do not know anymore than that Furina is no longer the Hydro Archon. I believe that would include everyone like Navia, Clorinde etc other than Neuvillette. Neuvillette obviously still cares for her, Clorinde even went to visit her and bring her out to party. The Traveler however showed zero empathy for her situation during the quest and barely anything at all during the story quest. That is the real upsetting part as the feeling that the player gets of wanting to comfort Furina, is something that the Traveler should also feel considering they have the same context that we do.

  4. I still don't trust Arlechino

I just don't give a shit about how she helped the traveler or Spina di Rosula in the Fontaine Archon Quest, the fact that Scara and Childe give us warnings about her true personality and nature is sus as shit.

I think that we'll see her true self and fight her in Furina's second archon quest, but idk

  5. You don't even need to imagine a government ignoring an earthquake to see why Fontainians resent Furina, just look at all the governments that botched Covid responses or worse pretended it wasn't even real. A great video Aster, thank you! I'm excited to see how HYV keeps building on their storytelling for future quests. Natlan has an incredibly high bar to clear!

  6. I keep on wondering β€œhow will Hoyoverse top this quest?” ever since the Sumeru arc ended, and Fontaine has made me ask that again.
How is Natlan going to top destroying a fundamental system of the world of Teyvat? And how is Hoyoverse gonna top Natlan with Snezhnaya?

  7. I think they did Arlecchino really dirty. I like all the time we spent with Lyney and his siblings, they were some of my favorite people in this archon quest, but we should have spent more time with Arlecchino. I understand her not being the main antagonist of the story, but she's a Harbinger. We should get to know her better. I wish there was a part in the story where we actively work with her and the rest of the Fatui to find a solution to the prophecy. I know there was that part where we find the stone tablets for her, but I mean REALLY work with the Fatui. Like, attend a meeting with them, get to know how Fatui generally run things, talk to other Fatui, talk to and work with Arlecchino to see what she's like, get a glimpse behind them carrying out one of their missions. I think it would have been such a cool opportunity and we missed it. I also don't like how Arlecchino was portrayed as a good guy. All we had heard about her before was that she was like a wolf in sheep's clothing, she seems nice but in reality she's insane and a really horrible person. But when we get to Fontaine, she's just given nothing but praise. They were basically like, "Oh, the old Father was terrible, but when Arlecchino came, she made everything so much better, we love her". What? I get some people being fooled by her kind exterior, but why does everyone think she's good? Why does she actually seem like a semi-good person? The most we get is her attacking Furina for the Gnosis, and that's just one thing. I was hoping for her to do some really shitty stuff behind the scenes. For example, sending your subordinates on a suicide mission, making a subordinate disappear because they caught her doing something that would hurt her reputation, killing a child, something like that. But I think they were afraid to do something like that because she's going to become a playable character and they didn't want it to affect their sales. Which I think sucks, we should totally get playable characters that are just awful human beings for the sake of the story. Like we can still have Arlecchino be a protagonist but still a really terrible person. Bad people do good things sometimes. But we didn't get any of that, which, I find really disappointing. I think they could potentially resolve it when they release her story quest, we could possibly dive into how terrible she really is, but I don't think they will. In fact, I think they'll do the opposite. They're going to make her do something heroic so people in the playerbase actually like her and it will help her sales. I'm calling it right now. I think it's just stupid too, because if everyone's a good guy, then how can we have a good story? I would totally get a villain too, if I actually liked them as a character(like maybe I like their writing, or they just have a cool aesthetic/playstyle). I think the Genshin story Sumeru and forward is amazing, I just think it suffers from being a game that sells characters as products

  8. after learning more about gnosticism, i realized how much it makes sense in genshin lore.. like it actually explains a lot of the plot and lore. this quest rlly became a turning point of the game to change the usual flow of the whole of teyvat.

  9. I think in a narrative lens, Furina can be considered somewhat of the antagonist – she is the blocker to the goal of solving the prophecy and she actively goes against our allies by withholding information

  10. I get what you're saying about Fontaine's archon quest didn't have an antagonist, but I also feel like it further cemented Celestia and the Heavenly Principles as the antagonist of the game's overall arc more than any of the previous quests.

  11. At this point it feels like Teyvat and what happens in it doesn't matter anymore and the real figures and events of importance are behind the scene and not shown. And we have to endure at least 2 years of this useless region-slop until the real thing is revealed.

  12. We need Sandrone and Arlecchino to really become true antagonists for Fontaine. That alone can make this story moving forward really strong.

The prophecy is over BUT peace is boring. We need harbingers to fuck shit up and keep at it. Lets goooo!!!

  13. Inazuma was done dirty. I wish they didn't rush the archon quest and made it FIVE acts long like Sumeru and Fontaine. I guess Liyue could also benefit from an extension. Maybe 4 acts.

  14. On the dragons good or bad thing a lot of people seem to have just flipped 180 and are now saying as if it's god's truth that the perspective of Focalors and Neuvillette that the Primordial One "stole" something from the dragons as opposed to fair and square won it from them through "the rules of war", is now unquestionably true instead of merely a perspective. Likely this will be challenged in Natlan just as it was in Sumeru.

  15. As the story is progressing, we are getting an image that the main villain is celestia, but i think even if they are wrong, in future story updates, we may see something which will make us think that actually celestia, is the hero or something like that. Then again we need to rethink about everyone, we will find that no one is truly bad (except dottore, he is really fk πŸ˜‚), circumstances and timing made them act like what they acted

  16. I feel like there was a missed opportunity with the 'trapping' of Furina by excluding Wriothesley and Arlecchino. Wriothesley is understandable as he has his own matters to attend to, but I was incredibly shocked to find out Arlecchino wasn't even part of the plan and only showed up at the start and end of Act IV. They're the characters in Fontaine most suited to something like and I feel like it was a damn shame that they were left out.

Also, also! Wriothesley's Wingalet/Noah's Ark was not used properly or given the amount of importance it should have had considering the build-up to it being a parallel to the Fortuna imo. I expected quite a bit more from it than just a cutscene of it rising from the waters and landing hooks in the water for people to climb up on, like a bit of gameplay similar to the osial fight on the jade chamber or just being able to see characters other than Wriothesley on it. It just doesn't particularly feel like it did as much as it should.

Main gripes aside, I thoroughly enjoyed Fontaine's archon quest and expect to see this level of quality in Hoyoverse's storytelling in Natlan and beyond 😌

  17. For me, put simply, Fontaine's Archon Quest, and the majority of Fontaine's World Quests, Genshin stopped treating its playerbase like children whose hand needs to be held throughout, and who need to be protected from more "real," complex issues. It felt like a mature quest, with mature topics, and complex characterization, compared to the very,,, typically shonen manga-esque quests previous to it.

  18. About the Fontaine main quest, I don't like Meropide Arc obviously, it was a whole mess.

Yet despite even many 'dei ex machina' events like Arlecchino found some necessary information (murals), Neuvillette saved Navia or how the Archon was catched and transported to the trial (a very stupid scene, actually) the final part of the Fontaine main quest is definitely the top of narrative in Genshin Impact currently.

  19. I really hated the notion that we "forced" Furina into revealing the secret and the we should've just asked her about it like, bruh ask who? She didn't even know the full extent of the plan, all she knew was she had to pretend

Which reminds me to the Ohio chemical cloud that came from that derailed train, and the conveniently timed boom of UFO's the news covered everywhere at the time until tiktok leakages were out of control and the government had to acknowledge what happened.
    .
No more UFO's after that either.
And I think remembering news of the government tying to ban tiktok ftom the states too.
    .
I do wonder how're they doing in Ohio nowdays.

  21. i just love the references to evangelion (people returning into LCL, wanting to become one) and steins gate (deceiving fate) in fontaine. and while its true we dont have a clear antagonist in this arc (sumeru had scaramouche), i think the story is still very good. About the heavenly principles, I saw some theories floating around that they are actually dead, and celestia now is nothing but a dead island. That's some Nier shit right there, with the whole 'what am I fighting for' thing. Idk if that's a good thing story-wise, but still interesting to think about.

Also, thank you for mentioning about Furina's trial. Many people criticized that everyone should apologise to her, but putting her on a trial was necessary for the prophecy to happen. And like you said, from an outsider's POV, Furina was just slacking off, running away from her job when her people were literally dying left and right.

  22. fatui were not always bad guys. child has been more of "friend" since he unleashed osial. also there was a fatui quest in chasm which potrayed fatui as very relatable humans.

also isnt "the knave" from fontaine???

also Sumeru > fontaine lore/story wise

  23. My issue with Genshin's storytelling is that they force us to forgive and accept antagonistic characters and their evil actions just because they are playable. Childe tried to kill everyone in an entire city and unleash a vengeful monster on the world, Wanderer murdered a bunch of people in cold blood, Ei still hasn't come back to help her people despite realizing she messed everything up, Alhaitham is just an arrogant prick and puts no effort into showing any kind of courtesy, etc. These characters are fine to have in the story and bring some interesting ideas and variety to the cast but why are we always forced to essentially be their friends? We can have playable characters that we don't get along with.

  24. My theory since Sumeru has been that the final β€œantagonist” of sorts is Celestia, and that the Fatui would become allies due to – at the very least – having a common enemy in the Heavenly Principles. Seeing the Fatui and the characters in general continue to get grayer and grayer with each Archon Quest is also amazing for the story.

Masquerade of the Guilty was my favorite Archon Quest thus far. My only real complaint was how tedious the third chapter was in the Fortress of Meropide.
