The Rise Of Elemental Skill Characters – The New Meta Of Genshin Impact

A growing trend with Genshin Impact’s new characters is a lesser reliance on their Elemental Burst for the bulk of their gameplay, choosing instead to place equal reliance on all aspects of their kit, or ignoring their Burst most of the time in favor of their Normal and Charged Attacks or Elemental Skill. Today we’ll be discussing these characters and why the meta id going in this direction.

  1. Is it just me or is it that after cyno we didn't get anymore burst dps units in the game. And the only one that is considered around now is Xiao mostly because Faruzan(at c6 though.) Fixes all his problems with positioning, Energy Reqs and also anemo shred that also works in Multiwave.

Also not needing to worry too much about ER reqs to focus more on offensive stats. multiwave used to be and can still sometimes be a pain on the a** but Xilonen fixed this issue though

Nowadays the meta dpses are more of frontloaded+sustained damage(Kinich(I wonder if he counts or should i make seperate category for him?.), Alhaitham, Arlecchino and Clorinde.) Or very high sustained damage(Neuvillette.) Or easy nuke levels of damage (Navia and Mualani.) The former two being more prefered because they fell more consistent to use.

  2. Uhh I don’t entirely disagree but your narrative is entirely incorrect. We had a lot of elemental skill characters in 1.0. A lot of characters you used as examples of one or the other are actually examples of both.

The narrative that we started out with mostly burst and leaned into mostly skill is just objectively wrong.

Now, META on the other hand is entirely different. We’re seeing more meta skill based characters and less burst based characters that are meta.

Take for example Raiden, who started off meta for her burst and ended up meta for her skill.

  3. Looking at the roster is it even that much of a shift?

We have Childe, Hu Tao, Ganyu, Yoimiya, Yae, Ayato, Tignhari, Nilou, Nahida, Wanderer, Alhaitham. All of which are pre-fontaine skill/NA based characters.

Even from the rest, Klee, Diluc and to a lesser extent Ayaka are more hybrid then completely burst dependent.

  4. Finally a content creator pointing this out, it's about time. I've been aware of this since 1.0 and that's why I only got constellations of all the E-Skill characters like Yae Miko, Furina, Kazuha, Nahida and Emilie . Kuki Shinobu and Fischl are the top 4*. I've disliked burst reliant characters since the beginning of the game except Raiden Shogun but it was her E that made me pull for her.
Burst reliant characters also don't work well in Overworld and Imaginarium Theater.
Another major powercreep factor is characters that don't have circle impact , especially the healers and sub-dps. Playing the game in Bennett's circle…no than you. That's my only reason to replace DeyhaC3 with Mavuika.

  5. Skill based characters are just better cuz they don't need to focus as much on ER making them have way way better overworld life and even in modes where you'll need Togo sweaty gamer mode they can quickswap and don't feel as punished activating their skills on wrong moments

  6. I'm fine with bursts being an extra rather than a requirement, using skills feels better, it's always on a set cooldown and you get more fluid gameplay. This is imo one good change in the meta.

  7. The reason are overworld content and stat focus. With burst centric characters, you naturally wouldn’t want to use your hard earned elemental energy on some hilichurls.

The only character that can is the Raiden Shogun because she recharges abnormally fast, it just feels like you have 2 elemental skill. That’s why skill-centric characters are more dominant.

People would also feel less pressured to go for ER stats if most of their damage comes from skill anyway, it’s one way to evade the “mandatory Speed stat” for most characters in HSR (not really a fair comparison but it’s the one I could think of)

  8. Burst based characters are just tiring to play because i love the adventuring and exploration aspect of the game, and if i have to do a full rotation to get my DPS Burst and then use it just to get rid of 3 hilis and an Abyss Mage then it's just not as fun, i'll start leaning away from all kinds of combat to not waste time.
for me personally, it's an Ease of Access thing and less of a character critique
and by extension, not having to worry about ER on Artifacts makes farming for them easier (at least in my head) because there's less "priority" stats i have to roll for. also as you mentioned, a Skill based character has a much easier time slipping into different team comps because they don't need to have multiple same-element party members with them to pull off their "thing", they can just whip it out in the Skill and swap through like usual.

i do like the idea you proposed of removing or at least severely lowering Burst CDs since the ER effectively already acts as a timer, and having a twofold system in place really does shaft a lot of characters who otherwise would be pretty fun to mess with.

  9. It’s very unfair to compare the skill cooldown of characters like Chasca and Mualani to burst cooldowns, since those skills don’t go on cooldown until after the skill ends. Meanwhile the burst cooldown starts counting down as soon as the animation starts.
I know the point is that you can swap them out and then quickly in again, but how often do you burst on someone like Klee and switch out frame one? At least be reasonable and say after a few seconds.
Also he shows Noelle at 10:51 but she doesn’t have this issue at all, her burst stays active after switching.

  10. Finally, someone else called out Hoyo for making abilities read like MODERN Yugioh cards. Old ones, just like old Genshin characters, were pretty simple. Now, they're a mess, for both games.

  11. It's been a complaint of mine recently that Genshin is focusing too much on skill enchant dps units. When I saw Wriothesley's kit during the beta it was pretty disappointing seeing how his kit was basically Wanderer's but cryo when it came to the way the skill and burst worked (and the C2 mind you). I feel like this move towards comfier overworld dps units has made the roster feel kinda samey and would like it if they made more burst oriented 5* units.

  12. Yeah, I noticed this for a while, especially for healers. Healers who use their Skill for healing just end up being more convenient than Burst healers who need energy, unless they offer other stuff with their Burst.

For overworld content, Skill Healers are more convenient to carry around.

  13. Why i need to build Raiden/Ayaka/Cyno burst when i can press skill and wreck havoc with DPS units like Clorinde, Mualani or Arlle?

At this day and age, only support units can have excuse to build burst. Even nowadays busted support like Chevreuse/Xilonen/Kazuha usually not burst reliant unless they need their burst to trigger their artifact effect.

So yeah. Less clunky to play, straightforward to build and quick animation. Elemental skill are the way.

  14. There are some good points but I think you’re missing some nuances for the sake of a simpler argument. The only bursts the truly does not affect uptime/efficiency on a carry are the pure “nukes” that comes with no utility for the rest of the kit (Wanderer, Chasca, Mualani, Kinich, HuTao, Wriothesley, Arle, etc…). A lot of other characters you mentioned that are not “burst characters”, do in fact need their burst every rotation because the utility that comes with them makes the character funtion. There are not really any Neuvillette rotation that you don’t need the extra balls from his burst, it’s just his ER is pretty much always covered Furina. Navia also needs her burst every rotation for crystallizing, especially in the new Xilonen variant. Lyney needs his for maximum stacks, so does Alhaitham, etc. There’s hust more nuance in this topic I think
