He didn't try to make a heart, he was broken and didn't understood his emotions, wanting peace from all of this. The story alludes to Scara yes, but his lines cover how this. At first he thinks he could have a heart and wishes to know by following the story, but then, in the Bohemian Rhapsody lyric, he just wishes to escape his pain, not caring if he has a heart or not… probably giving up that idea for ever.
Kid died from tatarigami initially, and then based off the child's story Scaramouche decided to burn the house with the kid and see if there would be a heart afterwards, but it was just ashes, hence the 'what a joke' by Scaramouche in believing the child's fairytale.
I know the trailer is very sad and all, but my brain decided to be a douche that it was, couldn't stop itself from singing that part "I wish I'd never been born at all" the moment my eyes read that part. Moment was ruined, but brain went "Carry on, carry on… as if nothing really matters"

Scaramouche didn’t kill the kid, the kid died from a illness. Scaramouche was out picking lavender melons and came home to his friend lying dead on the ground. After that scaramouche thought that by burning the house his friends ashes would end up turning into a heart, but in the end it didn’t. Which is why scaramouche said the kid broke his promise. Because in the end scaramouche actually thought the story the kid told was true.

In Japan, people often don't bury their dead. They cremate them. So he cremated the kid after he died from a disease. Then he sat in the fire hoping it would burn him as well. I thought 'Divine Will' cutscene made it obvious?
How can so many forget that the Kid is the same that died because of His illness in the other Scaramouche cutscene??? Scaramouche had Lavender melons because the help with stomachaches and the Kid had a stomach-disease which He died from. But thats not that easy to find out.
I know that genshin is often a difficult Story to follow because it's kind of all over the place. But i expected people to pay attention to the characters Back Story….
I didn't expect how many people dont get that he didn't kill the kid or don't even know the fairy tale the kid was talking about. I thought the fairy tale 'the steadfast tin soldier' was common knowledge.

In Japanese culture, 99% of the people who die are cremated. So if he is following the culture that is not as strange as it may seem. I don't know if there is a mistranslation of something because when he says 'nothing but ashes' is a little strange. But maybe he thought that a heart would have grown out of ashes, but he knows the kid is not a puppet, so I don't get it either.
