The Dangers Of Hybrid Scaling Characters | Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact sports a good number of characters with properties that grow in power and/or effectiveness based on a secondary attribute. This kind of occurrence is quite common in video games with a focus on using a lot of different units, and I wanted to discuss the gameplay implications of Hybrid Scaling in the context of Genshin.

  1. Yes yes and all the yes. Please please have more characters that don't rely on ho hum crit/crit dmg. Kokomi is a start, and shouldn't be the last.

Also Hoyoverse, please do a balance pass on previous characters? Xinyan perhaps?

  2. I disagree on Shenhe part
Even if she worked on all elements she won't be OP (unless C6) because the trigger quota is so small
Also I don't think your aware but her dmg increase is not actually that high, it add only like ~80% MV each time it's triggered, 80% of Shenhes attack isn't that much, it's about the same as Ayaka's N1 in terms of Motion value so it's really not that overpowered especially since it's triggered 7 times as max, which means 560% motion value for a Shenhe Hold E on a 15second Cooldown
To out that dmg into perspective, an Ayaka E has 432% or something MV at talent 10 IIRC with a 10second cooldown so it's really not so OP as people think it is
Not saying that Shenhe is bad, she's really good, but you're overrating her if you think she would be meta breaking if she worked for all elements, she isn't even meta breaking for freeze/cryo teams because Ganyu/Ayaka already hog up the top spots for Mono Cryo/Freeze

  3. The things that make those "hybrid" scaling characters amazing are:
    – Raiden is burst oriented character who demands ER and emblem of severed fate is literally her artifact form, amplifying her passive further. This is similar to Mona, though her passive is weaker, not including EL. Her kit is just so perfect, helps herself while helping everyone else who is burst oriented
    – Noelle uses DEF for literally three things: Damage, shield, and healing. Plus with the existence of Gorou and Husk, she becomes really strong while using defense effectively, not including Redhorn if her damage isn't already massive
    – Diona's HP for the healing and shield and she is a total support anyway, so you are not forced to build on other offensive stats
    – Zhongli's HP mostly for the shield, but even then you can add more damage to his burst. But his shield HP scaling is so high, thus HP is more effective plus the existence of tenacity of the millelith set that works well with it. Not including Homa

Hybrid scaling that does not hurt the character:
    – I disagree about Hu Tao being tankier since you want her to be on low HP and her elemental skill cuts HP anyway, but her HP is mostly for damage and the massive scaling makes her strong. For me she is just a character that converts HP to massive damage boost, that's it. It's about her damage bonus scaling
    – Albedo since his main source of damage is on elemental skill anyway
    – Bennett's HP-based healing does not matter since the scaling is way too high. He is just that OP

Split scaling that hurts the character:
    – Xinyan, I don't know how they can screw a character so badly in terms of stat split scaling and being pyro physical character. She had great early cons, I wished her c6 were something else that works with her, also ATK scaling shield maybe…?

  4. I think this special scaling makes sense on characters, geo represents crystalize/shieldin/protection so it makes sense for a geobcharacter to scale on def, in Zhongli's case hp makes him more durable because he's a tank and doesn't have to die too fast, Hu Tao makes also sense cuz she works at the Funeral Parlor, Shogun scales of energy recharge cuz electro element simbolises energy and also the electro resonance gives you more energy, many of them makes sense in my opinion and is nice to have more diversity in our build and learn about each character

  5. I think hybrid scaling its the best way to ensure you can buff them or change their rotation by releasing new artifacts or weapons later in the game, that way you can keep them relevant long after release, one thing I have noticed is that people have very low sight when it comes to genshin, they want everything perfect since day 0, they are too exitable and this often works against themselves

  6. It’s just more risky. A character can either become REALLY good from getting alternate split scaling on a certain stat or completely make them trash garbage.

A big limiting factor is weapons and artifacts actually having good synergy with those stats. It’s like how Raiden is insane cuz emblem of severed fate and engulfing lighting buffed the hell out of her damage with her ER scaling. Whereas Albedo struggled to have a better weapon option than HARBINGER OF DAWN because no artifacts or sword weapons had DEF scaling. Then when cinnabar spindle and husk of opulent dreams came out, he ROCKETED up through the meta by a large amount.

The problem comes from character abilities, artifact 2 and 4 piece bonuses and weapons not having good synergy with a stat at the time that spilt scaling character releases.

With abilities fucking over damage potential, look no further than the dumb imposed limit on Beidou synergizing with Raiden.

For weapons, look at cinnabar spindle being the first def scaling weapon for a character like albedo who was essentially released for YEARS without a best in slot weapon that could capitalize on that stat.

And for artifacts, Xiao literally needed an entire set dedicated to him and ONLY him to have a better option than viridescent which was sub optimal.

  7. Why Hybrid Scaling doesn't really work for Genshin (aside from copium) is because what usually constitute as Hybrid on other games would be "the calculation or conversion inputs of stats that result into either a singular instance of damage that deviates from traditional outputs such as magic or physical, or results into two instances of damage which is dealt independently." This type of scaling often result to a damage output that doesn't follow stat variable relations (such Atk output gets mitigated by Def or Mag outputs gets mitigated by MDef.) For Hybrid to work for Genshin they had to break the confines of characters having singular elements as damage outputs in Genshin are confined to either elemental or physical but there is no instance nor there is a character that actually deals Hybrid outputs. Sure characters such as Ayato, Hu Tao, Yae Miko, etc. have modifiers that increase their damage, but having Hybrid scaling in with the same damage output as a character that rely on raw Atk wouldn't be different since damage in Genshin is still damage regardless of type as opposed to your conventional magic and physical. That would mean if Hybrid in Genshin is only confined to mere scaling then it's either just a extender of tradional stats or a really borderline stat bias (Noelle and Albedo which uses direct Def scaling; Itto doesn't scale with Def he converts his Def into Atk which is a unique in his kit) The best thimg they could do are stat biases in which one stat has trade off for another but the former remains flat or is automatically converted into which a charcter could use (an example would be Jhin from League)

The reason why I've come to this is because normally Damage out puts have the order Primary Output which is Magic or Physical followed by Elemental Output if there's any. Genshin doesn't follow this format. There is just instances of damage that is unique per element or per output Electro dmg is just electro dmg, pyro is just pyro dmg.

So Hybrid Scaling in Genshin isn't really Hybrid Scaling but rather stat supports that contibute to traditional scaling or just scaling from a stat other than ATK.

  8. When I see character it's either because they look good or they do something my othe character struggles with like with xiao I like his jump ability in his burst but with kazuha he can jump and gather enemies with out his burst I have a small spot for versatile characters but I think hybrid scaling are balanced enough for everyone

  9. Yes, this game is definitely about DPS check, thus secondary scaling that doesn't contribute to damage is considered trash… Knowing this, I guess Hoyo decides to "dictate" player how build characters as per design by giving some "reward", which is damage increase… If not so, I can only imagine many players will try and build ALL CHARACTER as DPS…

  10. Im actually will welcome swiss knife character like Noelle. I think she is hybrid scale as well, and on the broken side. Because healing and burst attack are a scaled from def. With long burst duration. Energy recharge is never too big of issue while you can hording def on main stat and distribute all other sub stat to crit damage/rate, attack and energy recharge. It is almost like it will work regardless what artifect you throw at her. And it get occational renew of interest with new weapon. I decided to pull the unforge because it comes with 20% boost with shield strenght. It comes in very handy while I can free up 1 artifect kit ability for other used (healing, def boost, or energy recharge, or even attack related boost when I want to build a dps Noelle). It is funny that despite my personal attachment, I found Noelle has lot more to tinker with compare to others like Hutao or GanYu.

  11. There's this game called 'Punishing Gray Raven' and I think it does endgame content, resin, grinding, and character variety better than Genshin, the story is really different but there's a lot of things there that I wish Genshin Impact would do.

  12. So basically you don't know how to make them and use them, that's why you think they're weak and there's no point in actually using them. Ok.

Meta people kill leisure gameplay, THE actual content and true value of this game.
