I'm 50-50, like, you're correct and my Zhongli literally never left my team
on the other hand, it's just convenient and doesn't affect me too much (or so I'd like to believe)
Just by reading the title, I absolutely agree.
Literally the only ways shields are useless are fall damage, and corrosion, and one of those never happens in end game content, even open world if you’re just good at glider, which isn’t hard to do, and the other is countered by even just one character, Diona.
I've said it many times, I wouldn't even play Genshin if shields ( namely Zhongli) didn't exists. Enemies are already annoying enough

Don’t have zhongli sort of dodged his banner after everyone complained the game was too easy with him. I do have issues some abysses like this wolf lord rotation is a killer but I still manage to 36* w/o zhongli so it’s not a fuss.
Still refuse to get Zhongli, I don't need him.

My zhongli has 59k healt if I take 2 water units 63 nothing will get trough that
I don't think shields ruined the game. On the contrary, I think they improved the games longevity.
You said Diona's shield way back when started it all and ruined the game but statistics say the game has only grown and got better since then. I am not saying shields are the only reason or the main reason but I am saying that shield let people like me who don't want to get sweaty just play the game the way we want. More people stick around precisely because the game is not too difficult for them, and these people have money and are willing to pay for things they enjoy as entertainment without having to be sweaty in a game that feels more like a job after a while. Genshin feels like a game all the time, you never feel forced to grind or do anything you absolutely don't want to do just to keep up with others.

Tbh yeah when mihoyo caved on buffing Zhongli the game has become problematic between the developers and the players I have zhongli and have benched him. I am going for Dehya as it seems like what I have read and seen she will be a possible candidate for vermillion hereafter. I prefer a healer over a shielder overall and I want a friggin blocking mechanic over shields honestly like we get for that one event in the game. I hate one sided fights they bore me. Layla is the only reason I bother with quick swap teams because she essentially has 100% uptime too. I am going Dehya for sure because her mechanics are useful for my mindset. I will definitely choose dehya over a shielder. Thanks for the video Valk
…nope she should have to be a berserker. It's extremely simple = Tanking dmg for the team increases burst dmg + amount of burst hits increases pyro albedo damage.
That's all she needs for value.
I agree shields are great and everything especially for casual players
But I believe the better you're in the game the less you want to use shields….. Because everytime you can use shields there's a better and faster option (outside C0 Ganyu and Geo teams )
But I agree hoyo is just trying and trying to nerf shields idk why
Maybe it's just me who's less comfortable with playing shields… I only use Zhongli whith Ganyu and few open world explorations

Rifthounds though are a nightmare to people who use shields.
First time I went into Enkanomiya and encountered one, I didn't last long before having to yeet myself out of there to heal my characters.
Also my team comps never had healers before then, after that, I invested the hell out of my Jean and later on Kokomi once I got her.
some people bring up zhongli as if he's the only shielder. and tbf he is the strongest. i'd just rather have a second good but not as comparable shielder as zhongli, for battery purposes and for abyss.
it's good to have a second character that is like another character. think xq and yelan.
although dehya looks really underwhelming. honestly just change that ascension stat to something actually good and most of the issues are gone id imagine. reduced damage alone is cringe. i'd like if the more damage she took the stronger she'd get, resetting after all enemies are dead or teleports away etc.

Shields do reduce team dps in many teams but when they work they are insane
i must be doing something wrong, then. even my Zhongli's shields seem to be weak when i use it and it's at level ten. oh well, guess i'm more of a dodger than i am a shielder.
Bennett ruined genshin. All characters are nerfed to oblivion because of him. Ex Alt scaling etc
I think Dehya's coming with a reintroduction of the serpent knight-like mechanics that get way more annoying when you're shielded. They kinda need to reintroduce these kinds of mechanics to address the strength of shields. There's also corrosion from the rifthounds but that kind of goes without saying at this point.
I think the problem is not the shield, but zhongli lol. What's make some mechanic broken is when it's not have any weaknesses. Zhongli has the strongest shield, very long duration but very low cd, can debuff enemy, it's so broken. If you think about it, other shielder have weaknesses. Thoma rely on burst to have strong shield, noelle doesn't have 100% uptime, layla shield isn't the strongest, diona shield has relatively short duration, etc. But that's what make the game balance. The anti-shield mob it's not to counter shield, it's to counter zhongli lol
They have a lot ngl, I remember getting zhongli in 1.1 and now I can’t get used to dodging and always have the urge to add zhongli back to my team, but I have now found the power of freeze teams like wanderer,rosaria,venti,xinqiou

Let's be real here. The only reason shields are a plus in this game is because people suck at the game. Like no joke. Zhongli and big healers like Kokomi puts this already easy game on baby mode just so these guys who get anxiety from end game can actually enjoy something.
I think Shield is balanced by the fact that you used a party slot for it in exchange for a character that boosts your damage or CC character or shield breaker character. For players who do not have enough damage to clear Abyss in time, they might be forced to give up a party slot for a character with different role that can help them clear the Abyss faster. For overworld stuff… Shield is not the only reason that makes them easy so… yeah. I don't think Shield ruin the game at all since they cost a party slot.
Shields come with an offensive trade off more often than not, so I'd hardly call it the most broken mechanic in the game. Frankly offensive options are inherently more valuable in a game where the only endgame content we have is a time attack challenge. My Zhongli is still locked away collecting dust while Xingqiu practically never leaves the majority of my teams.
If I don't have the damage in my team to fully clear a stage in time, adding a shielder won't benefit me in the slightest and will just make my run even worse, especially if you assign another slot to a healer just to deal with corrosion.
When you look at a lot of meta characters and comps like Xingqiu, Bennett, etc. They already offer damage resist, healing, and even CC anyway, so that coupled with the lack of enemies that can actually 1 shot you- it makes the value of shields plummet drastically in most situations and is a niche comfort for certain characters like Scara.
One could argue that the ability to ignore dodging and keep on attacking because of shields actually adds offensive power to a team- but honestly, that's an exaggeration of how much damage you'll actually lose by simply pressing the shift key. This won't beat the significantly greater output you would get from adding a unit who contributes massively to your damage like Kazuha, Yelan, etc. Also most good comps utilize units that provide value off-field and proc periodically anyway, so it's not like that could even affect them.

In theory, what Dehya introduces to the game is interesting because it offers some of the same benefits as shields while not being as strong defensively, which means that larger amounts of the power budget for her can be allocated in other places. It just seems that, for whatever reason, Hoyoverse isn't doing that in her case.
I am calling it now. Hoyoverse will make people pay later on if Dehya is not selling enough. How? Watch the next enemies getting a corrosion-like effects that is amplified if Shielded, and the shadowy husks getting a major buff in abyss.And guess who will become "must-have" in you abyss team: Damage mitigaion without a shield Dehya.
They did it With Kokomi. Before the wolves and their corrosion, she was not a must have.

Honestly i think shields are balanced EXCEPT Zhongli's shield,his is too strong and has 100% uptime,take Noelle's one and you'll see it's balanced,it doesn't have 100% uptime and is not as strong,is not shields that broke the balance is Zhongli that broke it and they can't nerf him without insane backlash similar or worse than the one before Zhongli being buffed.
I have been spoiled by zhongli and kokomi I have one of them on each side of abyss every patch and it's just comfort mode and my teams are mono geo and nilou bloom so don't even have to use brain just unga bunga

"Ruined" is a strong word but i say definitely "dummied it down" i view shields as i dont care i wanna do my weekly asap and low brain mode.
When im out exploring or doing some shenanigans rarely use a shield my biggest enemy is gravitation… .
what she should do is provide more dmg/buffs for the team as a trade off for being a worse shielder, but developers rarely know how to balance in any game it seems.
It's definitely an interesting conversation. I've played for a little over 2 years now and have only recently built a shielder in Layla.
During those 2 years I've been a Yoimiya main and have heard countless times "you have to use a shield with Yoimiya so she can complete her combo chain, 5th hit" yada yada
I've never found that to be true though. On the contrary she helped me get my first 36 star without one. I found it was fun to focus on positioning with her and occasionally gambling whether to let her take a hit or not to squeeze those combos out. By the time I tried using a shield with her recently, I learned that I preferred to go without and I continue to experiment with the utility offered by other units that I just like more.
So I can see why a lot of players might find that shields trivialize too much of the content and maybe hamper composition creativity. I can also totally understand players that love shields because they can make the game more relaxing. Different strokes, I'm just happy the game can be played in such a variety of ways at this point
Understandable to a certain degree I agree it does make the game worse gameplay wise when enemy attacks like bosses just don't matter at all because you have an invincible shield all the time, probably why Mihoyo started countering it with things like the wolves.
My opinion is that Hoyoverse ruined almost all sorts of damage mitigation mechanisms, crystallize reaction, most of the Geo characters, and all shield-related weapons/artifacts by being lazy when designing Zhongli. I love the man for his design and stories but boy do I hate his kits.
In a game where characters like wanderer, yoimiya, cyno, etc exists that really would not want to be interrupted during combos and they themselves dont have any form of interruption resistance, shield is still really crucial cuz that'll automatically make them worse if that didnt exist.
On the side note to the limiting creativity options, I dont think thats the case. U can always introduce more shielders to the game without butchering the character's kit. Thoma is a good example, his shield isn't as strong but it refreshes and at least mitigates a little bit of the damage u take, while also applying pyro meaning it can be good in burgeon teams.
The only reason dehya sucks is purely because of how stupid her E and burst works with the unnecessary long cooldowns, long E proc, and high energy cost. Not to mention her HP scaling that is almost useless until u get her c1. I can bet ppl would find her heals and dmg mitigation to be good enough as is even with just 20k HP. They don't have to overly focus on her dmg mitigation ffs. I wont discuss the not being able to use xingqiu / yelan part cuz lets be honest, 4 seconds is too short to even care about vaporizing one or two hits that'll just hit like a wet noodle.
TLDR i love how her kit is somewhat different even tho its just albedo E mixed with xingqiu's E. I just wished her cooldowns and burst are fixed. At least let her burst refresh the duration of her E instead of just pausing it for no reason leading u to not be able to regen energy most likely during her burst which is the ONLY TIME you'd be on field.
We need geo mobs that ignore shields existence or able to break any shields in single hit. Kind like an earthquake effect
Actually, I Agree. A Lot Of People Underestimate Shields. But You Can Just Use Tenacity On C2 Layla And Break The Game With Freeze Team.
It's Just Too Good To Pass On. Sometimes, We Don't Even Need A Healer.
