The Genshin Impact x Sanxingdui has me thinking about all the hidden lore implications regarding Liyue and Zhongli. Personally I’d love to visit the museum one day!

3:04 The legend of 10 suns is a very well known and influential story in CN culture, it is the source of origin for the Mid Autumn Festival or Lantern Festival.
The legend says that there were 10 birds who represented the suns, normally 9 birds would rest on the tree and 1 would fly across the sky as the sun. But one day all 10 birds/suns appeared on the sky at the same time causing a massive drought and killing everything, an Archer named Houyi went towards the heat and shot down 9 of the suns saving the world. For his heroism, he was rewarded an elixir of immortality. Now after this part is where the story branched into many versions throughout history and even inspired Hoyoverse.
After receiving the elixir, Houyi found himself surrounded by treachery, people, friends, enemies, family, wanted to steal the elixir from him but most importantly the story now focuses on his wife Chang'e. There are many versions of the story, all involving fighting over the elixir and all of them ended with Chang'e taking the elixir and flying to the Moon.
The most recognised and celebrated version of the story was Chang'e wanting to end the treachery over the elixir, which has become a source of suffering, so she took the elixir herself and became immortal. By becoming an immortal, she started to float into the heavens and ended up on the Moon, become the Moon Goddess, forever separated from Houyi. This interpretation is celebrated by the Mid Autumn Festival by lighting lanterns and eating moon cakes. It is an interpretation that celebrates Houyi's heroism and Chang'e's sacrifice to remove suffering from the world.
This interpretation is also the direct inspiration for Hoyoverse's first game FlyMe2TheMoon, where the main character Kiana flies to the Moon. And in every subsequent game Kiana will always fly to the Moon in the ending as it is always her Destiny. In the ending of Honkai 3rd part 1, her story directly parallels Chang'e and Sushang straight up brings up the story of Chang'e as exposition for the audience. Kiana sacrifices herself by taking all the Honkai energy on Earth, just like Chang'e taking suffering, and flying to the Moon to become a lonely immortal Goddess of the Moon.
The Moon always represents Destiny in Hoyoverse games, a point in space-time we must reach and overcome in the future. I can't wait to see how the Unknown God(Genshin's Kiana) and the Moon are going to play out in Genshin, there's a reason why there are so many things related to the Moon in Genshin.
EDIT: I also want to point out that this story also inspired Lantern Rite and Hoyoverse's idea of immortality being a source of suffering.
I really enjoyed this video, learning more about this collab between Genshin and the Sanxingdui museum. Both the game's lore and Chinese history are so interesting. Thank you ! PS please Genshin, my wallet is ready for this Zhongli skin XD
China used to have 10 suns. Then a hero use his bow and shot down 9 of those leaving only 1 sun left in the sky. Not sure if it is related to the god tree or the genshin story though
oh wow, this was so fascinating to learn. I had never heard of these sculptures or the civilization behind them before. When I saw the video of Zhongli listening to the story and such, I thought the sculptures were "made up" because they have such a unique, stylized design – they also reminded me a lot of mezo-american sculptures, hence why I thought they were "made up" artifactis for the collab. I love how the reality is even more intriguing then fiction! One of my fave aspects of genshin is the fact that I'm always learning new stuff like this. Thanks for this incredible vid, Minsleif!
In love with how Hoyoverse extends to the real life and isn't contained within the refrains of an imaginary world, having references and everything… Makes it feel more real and close
During the Azhdaha quest, Zhongli said that his identity may change, but his eyes will bear witness to the history of humanity. Those who come to witness… will witness (Zhongli). Those who are born to remember… will remember (Traveler). It’s giving descender vibes. 😏
Alien zhongli confirmed
I'm obsessed with thr furnishing of zhongli. It's in my teapot rn
All the Zhongli lore in one video I didn’t know I needed until now 🥰
0:31 Zhongli's birthday is December 31st
