  1. So I’m sure other people have already done this but I want to do this. Also this is all being done at 1 am on my phone so I would be surprised if this makes any sense at all.

This is a boss fight for a reoccurring antagonist named Scaramouch. He is a member of the Fatui Harbingers, a organization of 11 super powerful individuals who are from a place called Snezneyah (I am definitely spelling that wrong), which is heavily based on Russia. All 11 members of the Harbingers have code names which are also characters from an Italian opera, I wish I could tell you what it’s call but trust me.

The character Scaramouch in Genshin Impact, is for all intents and purposes the son of the god of Inazuma, which is based heavily on Japan. He resents his Mother for abandoning him. He was found by the Fatui Harbingers and was trained to make him even stronger. He comes back three separate times in the game, the first he was introduced as a “hey look here’s another harbinger (the player had already fought one of them)” the second time he was introduced in the Inazuma story quest, he was there to cause problems on purpose, with the goal of destabilizing the country. And the third time is actually from this song, we find him again in Sumeru, a land heavily inspired by multiple middle eastern cultures. *I have not played this part of the story so I cannot speak on his goal here* but the big thing is that he has created a giant mechanical god powered by a Sumerian artifact, with the goal of becoming a god himself

Apologies for the long preface, but with all that said, this song takes inspiration and musical notes from his background. The traditional chorus that goes through the entire song is a consistent theme with each interaction you have with the other Harbingers, each having their own leamotif (I knyim spelling this wrong too, but like mini theme) but also have a over arching “harbinger theme”.

Then the Japanese sounding parts are a call back to the fact that at the beginning and end of it all he is the son of the god of Inazuma.

This is more speculation, but my guess for the breakcore, and drum and bass, and other digital aspects are due to two things, he’s in a giant robot, so digital. And also edm/electronic music is seen as breaking tradition and rebellious, and in this situation that applies here, as he’s rebelling from basically everything in a goal to become god.

Also also more speculation, but in the vocal segments there’s the Deep Male Chorus and then the more tenor/alto male lead, which is understand is supposed to be in the song Scaramouch, or at least his musical representation.

I’m definitely leaving parts out and it’s because this song if im being honest is multilayered in both a musical sense and a contextual sense and I don’t have the energy to do a full write up in a YouTube comment lol.

Im sure others would be willing to correct me, and I know there are probably other videos that explain the song and it’s context better than me but yeah.

  2. The composer is a psychopath when it comes to music
He doesn’t give a f about the theory
He jumps from tradition Japanese to hip hop
Like a frog jumping in water after hunting on the ground

  3. 18:10 you're actually on point with this one as far as the lore of the game is concerned.

    Spoiler:
The Scaramouche boss really did travel across the world AND time periods (through existing for centuries) to get to where he is in the game's current timeline, not to mention the hardships he faced which is hinted by the emotions of loathe, hatred, and revenge intended by the choir and music altogether.

It imposes to its listeners the story of a being who had gone through the struggles of the mortal plane and now seeks to be an all-powerful entity.

  4. i like how you say the predominant voice is the 'big' one (?) assuming you meant the choir and there's a lot of stuff going on within the music from the very start. because that's how exactly it is in-game. the boss is gigantic and he has so many things (atk mechanics) happening all around you, to defeat him you as a player also has your own mechanic to think about while attacking at the same time.
the best thing about mihoyo's music is that, they really 'tell' you what's going on in the game. quite literally.

  5. I love watching music analysis over many different game music and I found this channel. I think it is currently the best channel I have ever seen in terms of having both true emotional expressions and accurate musical analysis. Not to mention the excellent voice line. Sometime it is very interesting to see people reacting to games OST that they never played which means music comes without any biases.

  6. I'm an ex-composition major 🙂 Love this song and the boss fight, I wanted to do game composition for a while but ultimately college burned me out pretty bad, and I left before completing my degree.

  7. The high production budget of Hoyoverse allowed them to record orchestral tracks with added region appropriate instruments played by local musicians accustomed to those authentic musical flavors. Then they combined it with pop-, rock- and electro music to get something absolutely unique & fresh. Hope yo react to more tracks from Genshin Impact. Oh yeah. The concerts were crazy good too.
