At the start of the game, Electro was, albeit controversially, considered the weakest element in the game due to being almost completely overshadowed by Pyro in terms of sheer force. But throughout the past two years, new characters as well as further exploration of systems and the advent of Dendro has brought Electro to a level playing field. This left many people to consider Geo to be the weakest element in the game, and today I want to explain why.

We're almost at 100k subs everyone! It would be awesome if you could sub to the channel (if you haven't yet) 😀
I agree with the geo elemental reactions you suggested in the video, but I also think that either crystalize shields do more things. Another thing not mentioned are the Geo-constructs which are wildly unique to geo. Something they could've done was make Geo-constructs absorb elements just like anemo, or make Geo-char shields absorb elements as well. I really do think that Geo-Constructs should be more involved when they make geo-char because I can think of so many ways it can change the game for geo.
I'm sorry but I will never give up my 20k per hit noelle that never takes damage and does 50k on her shield disappearing in a huge radius. Chad geos don't need reactions for big damage unlike all those other virgin elements
Would really like to see the Geo chara whose kit is dedicated to crystallization and just like Nilou with burgeons will have special crystals
Honestly, one simple thing they could do (although admittedly the laziest, and therefore most likely possibility) would a general attack buff for the element outright. Since it doesn't have good reactions, having an attack buff would sort counter the offsets from having a full "Noelle/Itto go BRRRR" team. And if my Queen Noelle were to get a damage buff from something like that as is, I'd be happy. After all, my Noelle hits so hard, without food she still can reach a 100k+ Crit with luck when pared with Yun Jin, Yelan, and Gouro. And Gouro isn't even c3 yet, much less c6.
IMO it's a little weird to separate the element from the characters, looking at the Geo roster, there are so many amazing characters. If i was to improve it in any way, it would be to add a stronger elemental resonance when you have 3 or 4 geo characters on your team.
but i still think that their strength, weapon and artifact variety more than makes up to their lack of resonance with other elements, investment, that's the name of the game.
Geo is underwhelming. But Zhongli is still dady 😌
I've been thinking of some concept geo reactions, as I find it laughable that after over 2 years of Genshin's release, there's still only one "reaction," if you even want to call it that:
1) Geo+Hydro= Quicksand
Quicksand is a very viscous solution that occurs when water mixed in sand (or other fine materials) cannot escape. Sand, earth, same thing, really. And what happens when you get stuck in quicksand? You can't get out. It seemingly traps whatever is inside of it. So, when the Quicksand reaction occurs, enemies will have reduced movement and atk speed by 15-20% for maybe 10-15 seconds. I imagine it to work similarly to how frostbite works on the player. It won't deal any additional geo or hydro damage, but that's because in exchange, it will work on any kind of enemy… well, almost.
I think this would be pretty helpful, as reduced speed will allow you to cast other elemental reactions with more ease. Plus, it can kind of work as crowd controlling as well, since enemies won't be running to far away from you. It can also be helpful when fighting very fidgety enemies, like whopper flowers, fungi, and specters.
2) Geo+Anemo= Sandstorm
I can already see the angry replies saying "SANDSTORM PHYSICS WILL BREAK MY PHONE!!"
Listen, when I say sandstorm, I don't mean all the dust particles will be flying and covering every inch of the screen. Maybe just a small, blurry one surrounding the foot of the enemy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel a small group of particles circling in a small AOE won't be enough to burn your laptop/phone.
Anyway, I can't really think of an effect for this reaction, so I'd love to hear what you have to say!
molten reaction sounds so fun 😭😭😭😭
I think Geo still has potential to add new reactions to the game, and ones that function differently from most of the reactions in the game. Whereas most reactions are about doing damage, Geo reactions could instead directly debuff enemies for a tradeoff, while also taking a page out of the Dendro book and having specific auras and sub-reactions like Bloom or Catalyze. For example, Hydro and Geo could apply "Saturated," which does nothing by itself, but when Pyro is applied, it vaporizes and inflicts "Eroded," which shreds DEF but makes the affected enemy immune to auras until Eroded wears off, or something. Perhaps applying Geo on a Quickened enemy could result in "Overgrown," which drastically decreases the enemy's movement speed, but slowly regenerates their HP for every second they aren't taking damage. Or, Geo and Electro applies "Volatile," which when reacted with Pyro, triggers Overloaded, but instead of dealing damage with high knockback, it explodes a dust cloud in an AoE, and all enemies hit are inflicted with "Blinded," wherein they're confused and their resistances are decreased slightly, but their DMG is increased. I dunno, man, just throwing some ideas out there.
But I do also have to agree that the way it is now isn't necessarily bad; it's fun and unconventional, and not having to worry about reactions and auras is a good reward for the people who've properly invested into their Geo units. What sucks about it now is how underwhelming Crystallize is, and how few external buffs it has, from itself and especially from interaction with other elements. But if I was in charge of making Geo play along like everyone else, something like what I've proposed I think is a good idea.
I hope that when we get to Khaenri'ah or something (Well at least get Dain), they don't have visions or elemental powers. How cool would it be if their skills and bursts did physical damage like the ruin enemies. I know they're technically called ELEMENTAL skills and ELEMENTAL bursts, but still
I feel like crystalized could be buffed even somewhat by changing the scaling. Think about it. EM increases Bloom damage more than it increases vaporise.
Honestly, reactions are sometimes such a bother to think about. With geo, it is just…. Itto smash. You just smash everything in front you, easy. I would say geo is an element for those who doesn't really wanna think about complicated things. Also i like crystalize, cause i have shield most of the time without activating it or even picking it up on purpose, it just happens (gotta love Albedo main). The only thing i dont like is that it takes time against enemies who require specific elements or reactions to break through their shield. Heck, my Itto can beat Abyss Mage's shields just fine, but i hate the big hillichurl with wooden shield. That thing it my final boss.
honestly geo would be fine if geo damage did damage to all shields the way zhongli's shield blocks all elements, though to be fair I would like more reactions instead I just think no on would even notice the reaction thing if it didn't take 30 years to break elemental shields with the sheer amount of damage geo teams put out
Short answer: yes
Long answer: yeeeeeeeeeees
Geo characters aren't exclusively bad or doomed to irrelevance since characters like zhongli bring more than their reactions, and Albedo simply does enough damage to justify using in spite of his element.
I think an easy way to fix this would just be to allow elemental mastery to also affect Crystallize damage. It wouldn't make geo mind-blowing or anything but it'd keep them from being an actual detriment to some parties.
Yes, having no element reaction hurts it so much. I’m super surprised dendro and geo don’t have a reaction.
a simple crystalize rework could be picking up shards increase stats based on the shard element and em (e.g 100em and picking up cryo shard give 2% crit rate ,electro 10%er, pyro 5% atk, hydro 30% hp for 5 sec on your geo characters and half on non-geo characters higher your trigger em higher the stats )
it still keeps geo as it is but makes reactions slightly more useful and depending on how its balanced it could be really good maybe more rare stats like cd reduction or atk speed would make it more desirable and with newer geo characters balanced around the updated reactions the possibility of a full em geo support would be very viable
with geos current position, it is a horrible element. a select few supports can be used in a few teams but with the newer geo units (especially gorou), it seems their just starting to push geo into a solo element
although mono geo imo is the BEST “mono” element team, the other elements have reactions that make them better outside “mono” element teams
When you realize that Geo has no reaction to Dendro and Dendro has no reaction to Cryo
Congratulations for the 100k!
We also don't have an "upcoming geo nation" to expand upon the element because Liyue is already out. Hydro, pyro and cryo will probably be expanded upon when their nations come out. So geo is even more screwed because there's no in-game reason to expand upon. The Chasm would have been a good time but they didn't do anything. ;-;
Knowing Hoyoverse here's what I think they're doing with Geo waiting for new content ala their going to redefine Geo with the introduction of Khaenria nation kinda similar with Honkai introduction to imaginary and Quantum element of course Khaenria is probably years away who knows when we're getting it
you ever think that the point of geo is there for the people who want to play genshin but DONT want to think or bother with the reaction based combat?
not how I play, but it is how some of my friends play
Archaic Petra is actually even worse than you think, the bonus damage% buff is not granted by causing a crystalize reaction, it's from grabbing a crystalize shard. In addition, notice that Archaic petra lacks the line "this can be triggered even when not on the field" of a lot of other artifact sets. It specifically has to be the character with archaic petra's 4 piece set equipped that grabs the shard, so they have to spend even more time on field walking over to the shard and picking it up.
I main geo, literally since day 1
C6 Itto
C6 Aldebo
C6 Gorou
C6 Ningguang
etc
I totally do agree with you, Geo isnt 'weak' i very much delete the entire game without a problem, sure i have all geo units c6 which is already a deleting factor. Geo is very unga bunga, smash smash smash and i enjoy that. I do not have fun with Anemo/Cryo my second team is taser or double Geo. So it has a place in the game for players like me, do i consider it weak? absolutely not, do i think it has opportunities for improvements/versitility? yes i do.
Geo honestly in an ok spot given the released characters are only gonna get stronger.
At least they can make geo shield react with dendro and heal
I honestly think the hellhounds/bleed status was introduced simply to nerf Zhongli/shield. I remember there were complaints about geo was making team building so limited in early genshin. Not sure if this is truly the reason, but given that bleed does NOT care about shield, it makes me suspect all the more.
MAKE USE OF CRYSTAL SHARDS. MAKE THEM EXPLOSE OR SOMETHING.
I like the idea of shreading def old taric from league of legends use to have a abillity where if you didnt use it it gave you and your team def but if you used it your team lost the def buff but every enemy around you got there def shreaded
Personally I like Geo's lack of responsiveness tho, because I don't have to think hard about the reaction/immunity they will bring when defeating an enemy (say, unlike hydro characters who I can't bring to fight oceanid)
Geo is only good for mono teams, each character can flawlessly deal with each others cons
Fixing crystallize is easy. They just need to make the shield a little bit stronger and create an offensive mechanic related to the shield created. Let's say you have an Electro crystallized shield: what if the shield discharges Electro damage with no ICD in a small AoE after you land an Electro attack, but it can be triggered every 2 seconds? This would be an incentive to actually pick up the shards, dodge to keep shield uptime and actually build elemental mastery on Geo characters..
Personally I like that Hoyo doubled down on Geo's insular nature. I think it makes Geo a kind of "anti" element. As someone who has been playing Mono Geo Noelle since 2.3 I've never really found myself wanting for reactions. Being able to just punch through everything and ignore game mechanics has made Geo felt very powerful in my eyes. Geo may not be the best option at any given time but I also don't think its the worst option either. Geo has always felt like the element that an even matchup against just about anything in the game.
Both Yunjin and Albedo have functions outside of geo teams, making them less insular. Weirdly enough, Albedo's EM buff has potential in dendro focused teams. I totally agree that they should have made those two elements react in an interesting way to further incentivize his use.
Zhongli has a function too outside of geo too (stronkest shield), but as you said he is more of a comfort pick rather than a meta one. How cool would it have been if his pulsing pillars reacted with dendro to lock enemies in place and take even more damage from his pillar?
Geo doesn’t suck, it ROCKS
diona is the best, provides shield AND healing
Im just hoping a better healer for geo tbh
I have hope in this element actually. Imagine hoyoverse release a geo unit that can change Geo elemental reaction. Kinda like nilou in bloom team.
honestly, this just sounds like "wahh wahh geo needs ANOTHER buff cause it doesn't do as much damage as the broken melt/vaporize reactions. wahh wahh they finally added something that made electro (which was the most useless element before dendro) worth using but geo still needs more buff cause it doesnt do a million plus one damage. Wahh wahh anemo is finally useable thanks to kazuha and the EM dps buff for anemo characters making them more than just units to move enemies around."
