@7:54 The magical thing about game development is that you typically only need to program the gameplay mechanics once. 😂 For gacha & live service games, 99% of the actual work is done before the launch of the game (with a few exceptions). The rest are a matter of reskins and slightly modifying the assets you've already made.
After you've programmed the mechanics, AI, UI, animations (walk cyces for example), rigging, etc., it's saved like a template or blueprint (or "class" file, if you want the technical term) which you can drag and copy wherever you want, as much as you want.
Even for new areas, characters, and animations, you typically only need to create those assets from scratch once. Then, you can slightly customize it to make it seem new to the players.
It's very rare that game developers will make anything from scratch going forward unless it's a new CG splash image, new high-res animated cinematic cutscene, or a creative animated PV (like ZZZ's character trailers and MVs).
For example, HSR character models have "body types." Leakers can often tell what body type the new character will have, because the character models in the system files have the name of the template that was used. Gallagher uses the buff male body type model. Sampo is using the exact same character model and animated rigging. It's just slightly customized. Same thing with Sparkle and Silver Wolf.
3D is far easier to work with. Game developers take advantage of the fact that you don’t know better. 😂 Gacha developers, specifically, will be extremely lazy and make you pay for things as if it's some kind of luxury product.
And they'll turn around and spit at you after by making the characters and assets you paid for useless in the next few patches.
And then when they're ready to ride off into the sunset with their barrels of cash, they'll just EoS and delete everything you paid for. At the very least, guys, demand some self-respect by asking for higher quality experiences for the money you're giving them.
I don't think having more cut scenes gives a better story. I don't play much of open world game like Genshin and WuWa (I did play some bit but drop it) because it's not my type. But I do play quite some jrpg like FGO, Another Eden, and HBR. I would say these games doesn't have much of a cut scenes but still let you immerse on the story itself. Even Arknights where there would only be a cutscene when Amiya have some sort of upgrade in powers but still let's you experience a good story telling. I'm not saying that all of the story content of these games are all good but I would say I do really enjoy reading the story itself and I'm pretty sure, not all, but most of the players of these games felt the same
18:24 Not the script but background lore of their world. Like HSR, they have different writter from time to time. They already replace the guy who wrote the script for Xianzhou Luofu
People keep using the argument anime doesn’t take a week, but so does Gacha doesn’t only take 6 weeks, they plan out what they are going todo sometimes years ahead (I don’t remember fully but Penacony was planned out a long time ago) not only that they have a constant budget to work off of unlike anime.
they take storage for example it would be too much but isn’t that the opposite of what is argued? We’re asking to cut down the amount of time in story no? Wouldn’t that decrease storage? if anything at least limit storage increase with the deleted old content as well? At least with HSR it’s turned based and not really open world.
And then it’s too much work for the team, like aren’t they a massive team with a multi-billionaire company backing them, that still plagiarizes and uses ai.
My thing is, why are they defending this? This makes the game better and more enjoyable doesn’t everyone want that?
🍿🍿🍿🗿
People don't know how good Reverse 1999 and Limbus Company (bias as a studio fan and i like it darker) stories are. Hoyo are not even close to this (maybe once). WuWa the moment i saw that they are making their story a boring meta one i started skipping. HSR didn't caught my attention (same hoyo problems throughout all their games, but that's me).
It's not that mainstream gacha companies don't do it, it's that Japanese animators, especially 2d animators work way too hard for deliver an episode, and as far as I can remembered one of the few exceptions in Wit studio
man proving that he is dumb like always
17:50 I just realized something after listening to this part again. Using HSR's Penacony story as example, the 2.0 announcement livestream already mentioned that the main story will happen from 2.0 to 2.2, with an epilogue at 2.3. They wouldn't even mention this if they don't have a basis of the entire storyline in place. It makes very little sense that they only start the development of the story patch by patch, since they already committed to telling the story in 4 total patches.
What does the bird in WuWa have to do with cinematic storytelling? As far as I can tell it's there for gameplay, otherwise there's no gameplay. Or your argument is that they should create an entirely new boss? At that point the conversation isn't about the story anymore, it's about creating gameplay content.
Soon it'll b same my age 2025
gacha smack is cooking i am with you bro
Bugs and QoL part is just a dumb take. That's like saying One Piece "in your argument" should have been the greatest anime in its greatest story, greatest animation greatest character design from the start etc.. that's just a stupid take tbh.
with Visual Novel style of storytelling, the writers can just write the story and the devs can just plop the texts in and set the emotes on some dialogs. With cutscenes, the writers and devs needs to collaborate more tightly, possibly postpone more deadlines. Also, Visual Novel is the default storytelling system in anime games.
You forgot the fact that stories in gacha games are rendered in your device, while anime is entirely pre-rendered.
Btw, the fact that gacha stories are about stalling is the reason a Blue Archive writer left and tried making his own game.
The problem is you want an anime style storytelling not a game. Do you even know how much budget it will take to animate all the conversation we have in Penacony? That's like 7 seasons or more and the budget to make it an anime like storytelling will get over 1 billion dollars given if they animate it like Mappa.
One day westerners will understand why and for what Gacha games exist (for the most part), if you want to play an actual game – play an actual game, not a mobile time-killer to have a nice commute to work on train in Asia…
Kurobots in shambles
great video!!!!
The Impermanence Heron is related to the dead, Camellya was alive, but Lady Flora (The Alter Ego) was dead, and was the very same "gentle" woman who met Rover back then. Sealed off her own memories, simply because she got so obsessed with the Rover herself and ended up batshit, straight up crazy. In the end of it all, Camellya chose to 'love' Rover in her own way (Even if Lady Flora's shit in the head still lingers) and that birdie, as a tacet discord reacted to that metaphorical bs, that's why its there like the two Mephis bosses, it "resonated" with the person and answer its call or something. At least THAT'S HOW I perceived it…
Dude makes a "quantity vs. quality" comparison to One Piece. The anime that has a ton of 6min+ recaps. A ton of episodes stretching out chapters, hell even 1 chapter throughout a single episode.
You got the right idea, but your comparison is ass.
All comes down to: Show, don't tell
dont know why ppl prefer a static dialog for 2 hours over better/more cutscenes
Going by the logic in this video. There should have been more in game cinematics in Elden Ring besides the boss intro cinematic. especially when we are talking to very relevant NPC's like Ranni, Fia, Dung Eater, Corhryn and Shabriri (other's i can't remember atm) but we only got from the game was just our Tarnished standing and listening to the character either they are sitting down or standing up w/o much movement. unless we just gonna give this a pass cuz it's not a gacha game…
simplifying things is very stupid
Probably see you guys under one of Tectone's reaction video on this.
I respect you wanting asking for the games that have been slop for years to be better, but they have no reason to. Why would you cut into your profits to make players enjoy the game more when they already spend what they do (and probably would barely spend any more with those improvements). That is the reality of the situation. In terms of pure quality increases, if Ananta delivers on that, it needs to do beyond well for others to consider it.
Gacha games are designed to sell characters and nothing more. The rest exists to have a reason to pull the characters. And do not single people out, we are all idiots to an extent for playing gacha games in the first place, they are all far worse quality then most big games yet they cost most of us far more.
I hard disagree on the idea the script is done before they start. You think a game is going to write that entire script before they know if its going to be worth using (aka game flops)? I am sure they have the entire version script before the first patch and an idea what the next version after will have, but done in its entirety, nahhhh.
The worse for me is HSRs 3 second "cutscenes" of just people walking through doors or some shit. Like why?
Why call out Wuwa? Do you think they have 100 billions like Mihoyo? Its almost comparing a fly to an elephant. Not only that but Wuwa actually TRIES to give a more cinematic experience and gives us way more expressions in the story telling than HSR and Genshin combined.
Also the focus of Wuwa isn't the cut scenes, but QOL, map expansions, fun combat, harder challenges, CO-OP modes, mini events, characters (and combat animations) for now. I am sure with Tencent what you want, we might get in the future, but Im sure that if we ask them, they will take note and try to deliver.
10:26 bringing the bird at the end of camellya's quest is because rover helping her fight the heron is help her not die from overclocking, escape from death.
Impermanence Heron or 无常凶鹭 is the symbol of death in chinese legend, represents death.
Gacha story is garbage, but please don't glorify the anime/manga work culture. It's not healthy and should not be emulated by other medias.
Bro is pathetic can't argue with him 😂
I can’t believe we are living in a timeline where people defend garbage writing from billionaire devs
Arknights is the only the gotcha game that I feel like they wrote 5 yrs worth of content before it released
Good to see that finally more and more people recognize these problems especially at Hoyo. Their storytelling is utterly dogshit and when you complain because you want it to get better, idiot hoyosimps will go and try to argue with you with the most dumb arguments ever made.
10:30, because impermanence heron is basically a representation of terror/fear incarnate in wuwa's world. so due to how the story was going on and how camelyas state was in, she was in constant fear, thats why u fought the bird(heron boss).
Same reason as to why we fought the bird in 1.0 story with jiyan too as that war area had people die over years and is basically a horror representation or something resembling fear.
Just being a nerd ignore me
i dont play other gacha game beside wuwa and nikke so i can only address things about wuwa. i dont get your point when chatter brought up that wuwa does good CUTSCENE with good quality even if they are less (than hsr). putting whether the statement is true or false aside as i have said before that i dont play hsr so i cant really say anything. i just dont understand your response. why bringing up the last boss fight or wuwa glazing issues when it was not the conversation? the chatter never said anything about wuwa story because that was never the point of the conversation you initiated on twitter, which is the lack of good and amount of cutscene in gacha game.
This actually applies to recent content creators in the gacha space as well. Quantity over Quality for these new niggas. Drama and reacting farm is running rampant.
noticed how he doesn't mention zenless because it actually has way better storytelling when comparing to the other 3 lol
Aren't those shortcomings part of the deal with live service games?
Like, the lesser evil, so to speak.
At the end of the day you want people to tune in daily, weekly to play your game. Since gachas are inherently single player focused, with some exceptions, you can't occupy players with PvP modes or some horde stuff like For Honor or Helldivers.
Sure what we have is far from perfect but, me personally, I just tune in to those games to see characters do cool stuff and, well, get said characters if I feel like it.
I don't look at gachas for cinematic experience. Except for Limbus.
There are great RPGs to play for that. I dunno all the behind the scenes of how those games are made but I do know that something as big as Cyberpunk took over a decade and then few more years to polish it out.
So I would love to see how long it took them to pump out version 1.0 of HSR, ZZZ or WuWa and compare the dev time, team sizes and so on. Not to mention anime adaptations are – adaptations, they have source material. Whereas most gachas don't. Those who do usually turn out dogshit, like JJK or OPM.
Making something new is like telling an artist to draw something new and cool and not use reference. It will take some time. At the end of the day everyone should value their time. If a game is simply not fun then stop playing it and don't support the team with your money anymore.
I judge the games by gameplay. HSR is the most basic turn based jrpg ever made. Sorry but that's the truth. I would rather play Persona 5 for the 10th time, grinding the Reaper in mementos than whatever that weekly simulated challenge is in HSR.
Genshin gives me epilepsy attack with all the elemental shit.
WuWa is ok so far but if it turns into PGR where you dont even play the game, just press 2 buttons and your character is immortal and there is no interaction with enemies then I'm out.
TLDR: gachas just like other mediums of entertainment have their rules of how they present stories and other forms of content; we don't come to a basketball match and start kicking the ball cause it's what we think is better, enjoy it for what it is or don't and move on, you won't revolutionize the system as long as it brings in profit. And there are already games that will bring you "anime adaptation" level of story and storytelling.
Also what did you expect the reaction would be when you kicked the hornet's nest? There are blokes who are religious about gachas. They will jump you like no tomorrow for expressing your opinions. I can't count how many times I got banned for less. Come on dude, you're smarter than that. There has to be some better form of content creation cause lately the channels I follow just stir up shit, one after the other. Then the other channels react to the shit stirring and here we have timeline full of slop and circlejerking.
All the cutscenes back to back in HSR from 1.0 to 2.4 is like 1 hour and 16 minutes. Girls frontline 2 all story cutscenes is 45 minutes at 1.0 launch.
From the profit they get from us and from what they give… it kinda suck ass tbh.
I stand with smack with this! I always want more main story to consume and it will be good if it comes with full anime cutscene, just look back at HSR Belobog and look at Penacony… so different! well anime cutscene in Belobog is peak than Penacony.
