How Shikanoin Heizou Breaks the Catalyst Curse (Genshin Impact Gameplay Design Analysis)

It’s not really a secret that I hate how catalyst users play in Genshin but I think that Heizou is really fun! In this video I explain why he’s fun and what his uniqueness means on a larger scale.

  1. I got Heizou on the day of his release which was the 9th day after I'd started playing. Even though I didn't know much about the mechanics back then I knew that I hated catalysts. But oh boy did I get lucky with him. It was a pain in the ass to level him up considering I didn't get to Inazuma at that point but even then he was somehow the strongest one and I used him in every single battle. Still do.

  2. Heizou is my most op character, never done 100k before i got him, even against my Itto or Ayato (that is my only finished built character), on top of being actually fun to play. I love him and dont care about the abyss meta shitting on him. he's fun and carries my ass, that's all i need to enjoy the game.

  3. Catalysts also have the problem of being ranged units who can't range since the game's auto aim sucks and can even stop tracking the opponent if you aren't close to them…

  4. Yep, the first thing I noticed about Heizo is that his normal and charged attacks are basically copies the sword users. This seemingly small change actually means a lot. It solves the stamina issue and makes him a lot more agile.

  5. I always imagined catalyst users in genshin to be similar to grimoires in black clover. Meaning they honestly can fight any way they want as long as they have the book

  6. No, I disagree with the things you criticize about Catalyst users, the thing that make a Catalyst user is simply their kit.

Klee is an old character and has been massively powercrept. Kokomi is absolutely amazing in the right team comp. Yae is an Electro DPS, which are very hard to design due the Reaction system being so limiting to them. Hopefully the new reactions will fix this.

  7. As for Heizo, he has an E Skill with a very high multiplier for it's CD, that's about it. Using his normal attacks to trigger Swirl is sub-optimal DPS and his Burst don't have enough suction power to be anywhere near as useful as Kazuha or Venti.

  8. The fact that Heizou does a normal attack with his charged attack and the stamina cost is so low makes him so satisfying to play alongside characters like Xingqiu and Thoma, whose burst effects only activate with normal attacks. His skill is also extremely satisfying with hot high the multipliers are! A very nice touch to round off the niche 4stars we were seeing in Inazuma up until now.

  9. unfortunately not gonna have Heizhou until later on, since I already have Kazuha and I have a guaranteed pity aswell, thx Diluc from Yelan's banner πŸ™‚

  10. he is more of a on field driver like sucrose than a main dps, but he also does a butt load of dmg and can doubles as driver and main dps. so for a 4 star, he can be competitive with 5 star teams

  11. He was the only 4 star character from Inazuma that DIDN'T feel underwhelming, or super gimmicky, or extremely niche. Though I believe part of that is due to his innate element, and just how freaking STRONG his E-skill his. It's like being constantly pelted by BBs only to be surprised with an occasional cannonball to tidy up.

Everyone else? Kujo Sara restricted to electro partners for optimal efficiency, and a gimmicky charge shot constellation for her buffs. Thoma's shields stack, but even for a pyro element character, shielding is literally all he's good for and that's extremely boring if you happen to love the character and want to main them. Gorou is in the same pool as Kujou Sara, but for Geo Defense scaling units only. Sayu is… sigh purely designed for exploration. Her numbers are abysmal and her burst costs way too much without having a 2nd Anemo character for particles. Like the trend seems to be keep every 4 star unit stuck in an extremely rigid niche, and it feels gross. Like Hoyoverse just wants to keep giving niche/crappy 4 star characters.

  12. A niche in the game that differs from other characters..? I wouldn't really agree with that. Sucrose is already an amazing anemo catalyst driver with practically all of the same qualities as Heizou. Heizou just does more personal damage in return for worse buffing capabilities. I don't like that kind of overlap in characters to be honest.

  13. As a heizou main I honestly wished they gave his NA talent multipliers that are a little higher. Meta-wise, sucrose still outshines him in every aspect (both as support and driver) except comfort and enjoyability. His skill may be insane but everything else like support capabilites and cc is just meh.

  14. I took a break from Genshin for months. I came back only because of the Fatui trailer, and got Heizou on day 1. Heizou's gameplay was the one that pulled me back to play it again much more regularly. A balanced DPS unit that doesn't necessarily need to dish out super big damage, but has fast consecutive attacks and can work really well with teams.

  15. I hope more melee catalysts are released because their ranged status just doesn't work very well in the game. Bow characters, for the most part, can rely on either their Skill, their Burst or their Aimed shot to be useful (Yoimiya buffs her auto attacks, Ganyu's aimed shot can probably split the world in two if given a bit more power and Childe's Skill just makes him a melee character). But Catalysts have the issues of feeling slow and unresponsive because of how long their attack animations are compared to how much damage they deal.

And hey, for someone like me who likes seeing punches and kicks as much, if not more, than actual armed combat, I'd be very happy to see this become a trend, especially because we could get a look at some different martial arts from different regions.

  16. surprising how mihoyo finally realized how to make multipurpose characters that are good at everything at once
like there's noelle that can be a dps, a support, a healer etc but she's not really that good if you're trying to build everything at the same time, you have to invest in a specific stat to get what you want from her
