You don't need to kill every enemy in the withering zones. Only the ones that get summoned after you have got rid of the three branches and then you can interact with the tumour even if there are there enemies left. Also if you want to get the event quests done I'd advise jumping ship off the Aranara questline for now because it's the longest questline in the entire game so far. It's good, but long.
Sucks about the technical difficulties, especially when you don't even know what the actual issue is.
