Fontaine Discussions: Let's Talk Inspirations [Genshin Impact Speculations and Theory]

Today, we’re talking about Fontaine from Genshin Impact and how Aster accidentally mispronounced words that she ALREADY used and learnt in an older video. SMH?

  1. Fun fact: when people pronounce Fontaine, the 'fon' part rhymes with 'fond' and 'taine' rhymes with 'pain' but its actually wrong. In french 'Fon' rhymes with 'font' and 'taine' rhymes with 'ten'. Try spelling it as 'font-ten'.
Also the letter 'h' is almost always silent in french.

  2. i would expect sirens, and the description of those beautiful maidens in court sound like mermaids. mermaids are beautiful and they could drag people in the deep to their death. unrelated, played a game long ago where mermaids were portraited as vain, due to their beauty, so we could probably get something similar in theory, if the court is corrupt.
and since you mentioned archon names, there's hint of the True name myth in a book in game. I believe/theorize their demon names are the fake ones, either given by Celestia or by themselves , that not even Celestia knows them by , to not be controlled, since the myth is for non humans, and is mentioned(in the real life lore, as I recall) they take fake names as knowing their real name, anyone could have power over them(I knew it was valid for deities, but the book is mentioned is from human fear). I hope it makes sense what I write, I'm not good in English.
their region names(ei, zhongli, venti) may be their actual name, less commonly known(the traveler knowing them is another theory).

can't wait to get to fontaine in the future. your theory of being an underwater city would be a cool thing, I'd like that. there is a book in game referring to Daikengyou, a large whale that had a palace underwater, with jellyfish as servants(I theorize this could have been the water vishap lord by description), that aided Orobaxi in that fight. so I don't think an underwater city would be a stretch. it would be amazing, really.

  3. This is also possibly another inspiration for the time period: La Belle Epoque, which was earlier than the Aneesfolles. I believe this to be so, especially given that the Chapter immediately after the Fontaine arc is the Natlan arc, which is all about war.

I believe Fontaine is undergoing a similar situation to the Belle Epoque. During the Belle Epoque, Europe was at its height of power, there was a renaissance of art, music, literature, and the sciences. So many new inventions were being made and introduced. It was, quite literally, the calm before the storm of World War I.

  4. I think Fontaine might be a jazz version of Zanarkan from Final Fantasy 10 or that other location where the blitzball tournament was held a city it would be nice if the next guest characters would be Tidus(hydro) and Ject(pyro).

  5. Omg the piltover comparison is something I've thought about too. On the surface Fontaine may appear shiny and modern but the truth is hidden deep beneath where the regular people of Fontaine suffer like the poor before the French Revolution.

  6. Just an explanation on the breton word "Groac'h" even though the languages are somewhat close to each other at their base, it's actually pronounced differently than Loch in scottish, c'h in Breton is like a french R sound, or like "ch" in German and welsh or the Spanish "J", so groac'h would be pronounced "groaR". (you can think of the German word "nacht" the pronunciation of the ch is the sound a c'h should make)

  7. Since Fontaine will take inspiration from Europe, I had a theory that the sub-races (like Liyue adepti or the Yokai characters in Inazuma) and/or playable characters could be inspired by characters and creatures from various Grimm fairytales.

What sparked this theory was one of your earlier videos that brought up how the twins shown in the Fontaine trailer could be artificial humans/dolls. It immediately made me think Pinocchio, and hearing the clock chime just now when you showed the trailer again reminded me of Cinderella.

The Court of Fontaine, should your guess of them being sirens be right on the money, it'd be funny if they were a council of seven sirens/mermaids, possibly as a subtle nod to the seven daughters of Triton from the Little Mermaid.

  8. In the closed beta, Venti mentions the name of the Hydro Archon. Her Ars Goetia name is Focalor. A Duke of Hell who is known to drown people and overthrow warships. Has a lot murderous tendencies. 😅 (Oh and the Cryo Archons name was mentioned as well)
