Alhaitham is a scribe for the Akademiya in Sumeru.
He now serves as acting grand sage as the previous grand sage was deposed due to treason.
Apparently he has this work rivalry with Cyno, the Mahamatra which is like the leader of police force in Sumeru (white haired dude), who is best friends with Tighnari, leader of the forest rangers (dude with a bob and spiky ears).
The blonde guy, Kaveh, is an architect and his roommate.
It’s giving a bunch of college dudes bonding over drinks and board games.
This is one of the most well thought out demos storytelling-wise. I love it.
I will never get tired of telling people that the real person he's inspired in (Ibn Al-haytham) was an Arab scholar who wrote one of the most solid theories about light and his biggest question was about REFLECTION AND HOW in-game Alhaitham's design is inspired on his work (the prisms and the little reflective floating stones on his burst and a bit of his ideology) amazes me every time. This great dude is also the fist one in history to use the scientific method and wrote a lot, but also was insistent on the importance of questioning everything one learns. I loved your analysis :3

It makes sense for them to all be colleagues / friends since they're all employed in the Akademiya and/or went to school together there.
Also I think the transition to the bar was because Kaveh (the blond guy) explaining where he was last week. So we jump from past Alhaitham to present alhaitham.

ngl i think my favorite part about him is that he was based on a real Arab scholar, the father of modern optics, Ibn Al-Haytham. Alhaitham in game is not only a scholar, but a core part of the academia that he's in
i believe his prismatic/mirror ability is based on hasan ibn al-haytham's contributions on theory of optics and visual perceptions
