Voice Actors Are STRIKING Genshin Impact? (And More) | SAG-AFTRA Strike

This VA union strike as potential to make changes in Hoyoverse, unlike the Twitter “boycotts” about Natlan. It’ll be interesting to see if Genshin Impact remains the only Hoyo game included.

  1. Hilarious how your generic, every day factory worker will probably be one of the last people to be replaced by an AI. I mean come on, its not like this strike will do anything. You think these companies will stop using AI just because people are upset? Corpos are pro money and AI certainly saves them a lot of money. They couldn't care less about human rights as long as they save on that sweet sweet cash ESPECIALLY company like hoyoverse that spends furtune on adverts alone. Just wait until AI gets developed even further to the point where corpos would be able to get a random guy off the street to provide samples and the AI will make it sounding professional and realistic and believe me it will happen because we went from AI producing voice that sounds more like an eldritch abomination than human to something that actually sounds convincing.

  2. The argument that the AI isnt good enough to evoke human emotion is the worst take to have.
There are already models that change their tone and sound near human without any post production. In a year they will be in indistinguishable from humans.
I agree that it is a problem how people are losing their livelihoods over ai's, but we need to use stronger arguments in our narratives.

  3. Just remove english voice acting. I guarantee you that won't even affect sales, it would be net positive because EN va cost more than how much money they bring. Most people who play anime games won't stop playing because there's no en voice.

  4. I'm against GenAI in any field, tbh. It's all based on theft and I think it needs to be done away with completely. I don't need soulless art in any form.

  6. A strike can go well, or it can go very poorly. The VAs need to show these companies that they offer a more valuable service than AI can. AI depends on the information you give it, good and bad. And that means the more information you give it, the larger the infoset it has to work from. Take Neuro-sama as an example of what is possible with AI. I'd say AI won't have the intuition that human actors do, however the voice direction the VAs get is sometimes very bad. Like for names of people, organizations, and even countries in Genshin .

The obvious answer for a company like Mihoyo that works in multiple language dubs that the VAs do not want to hear is a complete and full removal of the English dub. I see this happening over the use of AI for voice work, because many players don't use the EN dub anyway, and will play without it. The VAs do not want to see Mihoyo go in this direction, but it would be incredibly easy to do, because they already have all the other assets, and does not relate to respect to the VAs and their work. But it'd be very unfortunate because it means all the VAs lose their jobs for companies that opt to remove their EN dub. And here I was looking forward to the possibility of an EN dub being added to HI3 . Not anymore, it seems.

Well, whenever someone chooses to strike, they take a calculated risk, that their services are in demand, and denying their services will hurt the company. In Mihoyo's case, I think it will affect them very little because they still have more players in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia than they do in Europe and America. The reason they listen to Chinese players is because the Chinese players have threatened them directly before. So I'm not sure what affect this is going to have.

I do wish the VAs well, and that conditions are changed to become good enough to live by.

However, things like the skin tone of characters? Chinese sensibility doesn't like dark-skinned characters, and that's where Mihoyo lives. That's one thing. They also have to play to Chinese regulations, at least a little. They can't flaunt them all. But of equal importance, sadly Mihoyo doesn't care much at all for Genshin as long as it keeps bringing them money. Not even the Genshin Team, the dev team responsible for the game, really cares for it, and especially not for players outside of China.

How do we make them care? We deny them, of course. Don't buy anything in Genshin . If you can get away with it, don't play Genshin , for as long as possible (if you decide later to play, you can probably catch back up in about a month, it's not a big deal to miss out on event stuff because of the lack of an endgame, so gear and characters don't matter). The lower the numbers on Genshin , the higher the likelihood Mihoyo might force the Genshin Team to change things. They could even get rid of the producer who nearly ruined HI3 when he was there, the one who gives out three wishes for an anniversary reward. Genshin players should demand changes and improvements from the Genshin Team. They deserve better for these three, almost four, years of support.

And workers ought to be treated well, with respect.

Will the VAs get the result they want? I don't know. They have certain protections under the union, but I'm not sure how they apply here. Worst case, Mihoyo decides to completely ditch the EN dub. Best case, they come to an agreement with the union. I don't see them using AI, because they could more easily hire someone else who would jump at the chance to work with them. A company of over 1,000 employees can surely find someone. That's gotta be taken into account as well.

FYI I wouldn't work with the Genshin Team, not unless they brought real and marked improvements to the game. And let us pet the animals. Since Day 1, we've been asking.

  7. It's ironic to Mihoyo's case because one of the events in HI3 had a company demonstrate its ability to generate things quickly with AI by creating a series of increasingly more powerful opponents. The names included 'GPT' as a clue, not that it wasn't quickly spelled out for you. A scathing commentary on overreliance on AI, and you're saying they use AI?

  8. This video is basically "I heard Genshin was involved somehow, but I refuse to educate myself as to how or why." You sound so stupid when putting this on hoyoverse and not the studio mentioned. Do better before you keep putting out misinformation like this.

  9. Not having to pay a person for a form of media is just another mechanism of capitalism at work. I can't blame companies for finding ways to cut costs. Big corporations are gonna do what they gotta do. Until you change laws in congress it's not gonna matter.

  10. Well unlike English voice actors, Japanese voice actors are better well respected so I doubt they would jump to using AI, it would piss off a lot of Japanese people in my opinion. Still imma play all the Hoyoverse games but it is shitty for the overall EN voice actor community, hope it goes well for them.

  11. Voice Actors are striking against AI usage in general, not Genshin Impact specifically, the only reason they're on the list at all is because Formosa, responsible for GI voice recordings are being struck against, the title is a bit disingenuous and misleading.

  12. This is probably going to go about as well as the Hollywood strike. Results in even more layoffs and the only people who really benefit are those in charge of the union.
If they don't want to be replaced by AI maybe they shouldn't be so insufferable to work with that AI becomes an option. When you have VAs in hubris trying to dictate what should or should not be in a game even going as far as attacking your company in the process don't be surprised when your employers look for less annoying options. Snowbreak ended up dropping english VA because the VAs tried to force them to drop the very thing keeping the game alive and they couldn't find replacements since no agencies would work with them. Stuff like that makes me not hate AI as much as others.
Also, a strike happening when game companies left and right are laying off people isn't going to work as well as people might think.

  13. I dont want anyone to think I am condoning this, but its almost too late. That is if it isnt already. Western localization and the VA scene is often very vile and corrupt, often pushing an agenda or changing the meaning of sentences to mean less then it is if not outright changing the entire phrase altogether. People want accurate translations and arent getting them. Basic supply and demand dictates this is why we are in this situation in the first place and it is western localization's fault that fans would rather deal with AI then their politically fueled "fixing" of the game or show's dialogue based on their own subjective and often shaky "holier-then-thou" warped "morality."

  14. I think if your argument is you shouldn’t use AI because human VAs will always be better, you’re fighting a losing battle. Proper legislation needs to be built around the use of AI but good luck with that.

  15. People who are uninform, Hoyo/Genshin has nothing to do with the strike, they are just an innocent party that involve just because they hire Formosa group for the VA. Hoyo/Genshin literally can't do anything to help the VA for they strike. The VA strikes is towards their respective Studios, the Formosa group is one of them. They want Formosa group to change their policy regarding AI.

Formosa group and other VA studios is the one at fault. Hoyo/Genshin has nothing to do it. The best thing what Hoyo could do is to drop Formosa group entirely and hire similar VA but in different VA studio that's not affected by the strike or just hire the VA directly with a new contract if they can. I believe they should just do this but only if there's no contract tied them to Formosa group.

  16. AI wont be regulated until it's use causes a major international disaster (in one of its many forms). Then regulation will happen and it will most likely be restricted to government and military use in most countries only.

  17. I support any forms of strike, as long as the workers are fighting for their own salary, interests, and maybe to an extend every workers interests in their industry or other industry. In this perticular case, i dont think strikes will stop hoyos interest on ai, its not a secret in china that hoyo is invested into ai voicing.
