Thoma is one of Genshin’s most tragic characters. Despite having an interesting and well functioning playstyle, it didn’t cater very well to the general format that Pyro espouses and suffered from underwhelming numbers. Fortunately however there may be one possible way Thoma can find a way into relevance. Today let’s find out Why NO ONE Plays Thoma but how that could change very soon!

  1. I feel like we’re ignoring the fact that thoma didnt “happen” to be this way, he was deliberately made like this by hoyo, who are terrified to make units half as good as the twink and shortshorts

  2. Thoma is one of my favourite characters but his kit (before 3.0) was.. underwhelming.

Looking at him pre-3.0, his biggest problem (imo) was not offering enough compared to the competition. As a pyro support, he's competing with Bennett, and as a shielder he's competing with Diona and Zhongli. Bennett, Diona, and Zhongli all have more to offer than Thoma. Bennett can heal, buff, and battery. Diona can shield, heal, and battery. Zhongli can shield, permanent atk% buff with 4pc totm, and has universal resistance shred. Without C6, Thoma can only shield and apply a small amount of pyro.
He also needs a lot of energy recharge without C4. Bennetts burst is cheaper (60), Diona has the same 80 cost but her energy refund is on C1.

I'm really happy about burgeon though 😀 I'm still working on building my EM Thoma, and some teammates to go with him, but it looks really fun and I can't wait to play it ^-^

  3. Thats what happens when you made character only to complement literally one character. He was made to promote Hu Tao which came with him during his debut. Not everyone uses Hu Tao and those who do also have Zhongli.

  4. Honestly, he has a lot of cons and not many pros… 80 energy cost, pryo proc AND icd on top of that, you need autos to have a decent shield. You use him only if you dont have any other option. He's there just for the pyro resonance or as a cheerleader lol I really like him as a character but he's too lackluster, even with his new use with dendro

  5. Totally off topic but I usually watch videos in 1.5x or 2x speed but I always have to slow yours down to 0.75x speed. It’s like when I listen to foreign language videos to test my comprehension, if I want to understand I have to listen slowly and rewind a lot and even then I’m really just guessing half of it 😂

  6. I just want to say, with 3.1 coming out I've been watching a lot of Genshin videos from other creators. There's really no better Genshin creator than you. You're the only one I chose to subscribe to. You just have really good content! I always look forward to when you release another video.

  7. OMG i remember when Thoma got released i was so excited to main him alongside Childe. But when i got him i was like 'yeah nevermind this is underwhelming' lol i really thought i was gonna enjoy him. Also, Doesn't Thoma have the lowest base hp in the game? for a shielder who scales off of HP, that's a disaster already. Also to add insult to injury, his Ascension stat is atk% when he barely even does any dmg.

  8. Good video explaining the character as always. The music seemed loud in relation to the voice over I could still hear you but the mix seemed off. I pulled a Thoma that I’ve never used because I forgot he can shield the pulled Zhong Li so the shield didn’t matter anymore

  9. his ultimate could have gotten a better look
like a samurai armor bust that hold a giant fire katana that swings in large aoe

the scaling of both shield and damage are a joke…a wet noodle ihits harder than that

and honestly the stackable shield is a joke
you need so specific stuff to benefit from it…it feels not worth

    I despise xiangling so much
she will wither away on the bench at lvl 1 until the end of time

  10. About the last thing you said, Chongyun would definitely have been better if he wielded a different melee weapon. Claymore means Freeze is almost not a viable option anymore. Xinyan would've been better if she was Electro or Cryo for Superconduct. I think this applies to a bunch of the characters, so Thoma, as you said, probably too

  11. I just want everyone to know that his burst multiplier is the same as xingqiu its even higher. But the problem is his skill multipliers plus his burst doesn't hit two-three-five times, its aoe.
I believe that hoyoverse really intend to make him a pyro xingqiu but failed miserably, they're ascension stat are both atk, 80 burst cost and both having dmg reduction which is why he has weak shield, its not a shield rather a dmg reducer and poise generator.
I built him to 90 I know everything about my boy.

  12. I like Thoma and want to use him more often but boy do I wish he did just a little 🤏 bit more damage. At least his Burst should hit harder considering the 80 energy cost. I haven't tried him with Dendro yet, but I will to see how I like it.

  13. Hi, Vars. I would like to suggest a topic to a (maybe) future video: character names pronunciation.

You always have shown respect for the “correct” pronunciation of character’s names, the best exemple being Keqing, but with the recent release of Sumeru characters, some debate have been raised in the community about this topic.

Is it “Tea-nari” or “Tie-nari”? “Sigh-no” or “See-no”? And even older characters, like Diona (“Dee-ona” or “Die-ona”?)

Paimon voice actress already answered some harassment (seriously, people?) saying the higher-ups mandates that all pronunciation follow english rules. That’s why “Pie-mon” is more called “Pay-mon” nowadays. However, I believe the discussion itself to still be valid.

Personally, I always follow the japanese kana to know how to pronounce some name, with the exception of Liyue characters, who follow the chinese language pronunciation. Japanese converts names phonetically, not grammatically, which makes a good guide, in my opinion. However, English is not my first language, so it’s “easy” to me.

Anyway, that’s a suggestion. Thanks as always for the great videos. 🙂

  14. I was interested in a team of him hu tao yelan and the water boy but I never seen anyone talk about it how good is it?

Btw I don’t have yelan and thoma so I can’t taste myself

  15. Thoma is dead. Just… utterly dead. Even with his sparse pyro application, and shielding, he is defeated in EVERY aspect he could possibly fill the instant you compound all other utilities any other unit that competes with him provides. Oh, he's got a really good shield comparable to Zhongli? Cool. I can get a shield that's just as effective or effective ENOUGH from Diona, PLUS healing, PLUS elemental mastery boost, PLUS Cryo application for freeze or reverse melt, or healing for my super conduct physical DPS. The only unit Thoma beats at all in respect to shield purposes is Xinyan… but even Xinyan is more serviceable than him, and that's INCLUDING the fact her shield's DOT pulse is literally broken because it doesn't even work correctly half the time despite using it as described to get the effect it's supposed to do. She can still burst, she can still DPS if you really want, and she can still apply pyro.
Thoma was dead on arrival not because of how his kit functions, but because they hamstrung the shit out of his numbers

  16. Was never a fan of Thoma under dendro. Burgeon full EN Thoma with Barbara as the driver is shockingly powerful, and a lot of fun. Possibly the best thing is it’s breathed new life into two characters previously benched or seen as useless.

Yes, Sucrose or Heizou would be stronger drivers, but Barbara’s slower hydro application helps to not drown the dendro, and also provides comfort with heals (and paired with the clam set, extra damage).

  17. Why are all the 4* pyro that aren't Xiangling so damn lackluster? At this stage I don't even give a shit if they release a pyro version of Yelan. Why not do it when I can have another Xiangling for my other abyss team? No one seemed to mind that Yelan was so similar to XQ anyway. Doesn't even have to be a 5* xiangling, just fuckin' gimme one single Pyro sub-dps/support to give a shit about that isin't Xiangling. God knows my Melt Ganyu could use one.

  18. I started playing Genshin because of Thoma. Joined on the day of his release, built him as a main DPS and now 36-star the Abyss every cycle with him (C6, lvl 90, triple crowned). I am a dedicated Thoma main and would not give him up for the world… but there's no ignoring how lackluster he is as a playable character.

There's an issue with practically every part of his design. He's a defensive character that's part of an offensive element, yet his kit doesn't go all in on the defense either. His ascension stat being ATK does nothing for him (even if you build him DPS), and his HP is unreasonably low for a character who scales off of HP. He has significant energy issues at C0 due to his ult costing 80 energy and his sub skill being locked behind a 15-second cooldown. His damage is nonexistent. He is useless in co-op despite his personality being all about protecting others. His kit offers no support outside of shielding and a small 15% damage boost to certain attacks at C6. There are the issues with ICD and his Pyro element, which were covered in the video.

Thoma is the most dedicated shielder in the game, and his claim to fame are his stacking shields. But the way they stack makes them difficult to understand and, overall, unintuitive. Thoma's shields can potentially be the second best out of all current characters, but you'd need complete full stacks to get to that point, which means you'd need to avoid getting hit during the duration of his ult. But if you can already avoid 100% of damage through dodging, there's no point for a shield in the first place. Dodging to protect your shield makes no sense when your shield is supposed to protect you.

Concept-wise, Thoma looks good on paper, but there are so many little issues with every part of him that he fails to achieve anything he was meant to achieve. It's tragic, considering his popularity as a character. He is good in niche situations and works well with certain characters, but overall there's almost always a better pick to fill Thoma's role on a team.

I still love my dango boy very much though. For all of his problems and issues, there IS one thing he is good at… and that's putting a smile on my face 😀

  19. Been using him since day 1 as what he seemed to be made for: Shieldbot and VV setup for Hu Tao. With burgeon he's got his own thing going but he's always been a top option for specifically and only a Hu Tao VV team (and maybe yoimiya VV)

  20. I definitely don't think Thoma will become meta BUT I'm really happy that he found a place in burgeon teams especially since we don't get much use of him anywhere else.

I'm really happy my boi Thoma finally has a decent team where he feels needed and not just a substitute .

  21. I just have one problem with this one. This is probs the only why no one plays where you missed the whole point of the character.
You’re way too focused on damage and numbers over a character who was never meant to do damage in the first place… You said, too much of his kit revolved around shields, like yeah, thats the whole point. You also said people didnt play him because his numbers were abysmal. Yeah, he was never meant to be a sub dps in the first place. Anyone who plays thoma never used him for damage, but for his shield. He stands with the 2nd biggest shield in game below zhongli if used properly… you really shouldn’t have compared xiangling and thoma. Xiangling is a sub dps whilst thoma is a shielder. (Once again, he is a shielder, not a damage dealer.)

  22. I got Thoma as my first shielder. I'm currently building Diona. I gotta say, between the two, I love Thoma more.

For awhile being stuck at lv 60, Thoma was my way of surviving a multitude of powerful enemies between lv 70-80 thanks to his shield holding up for so long!

Even now, Thoma is my main shielder against all the weekly bosses sans Childe and that's only because Diona's shield messes with his aiming to miss attacks entirely.

Thoma is also far lower investment for me. Just slap him with some HP, ER, maybe some EM on the side, and it's good.

His only real issue for me, and what almost prevented me from building him, is that bloody blue mushroom locked in Tsurumi Island, which is also locked behind several sidequests.
