What Is Genshin's Afterlife? [Genshin Impact Lore and Theory]

#genshinimpact #genshinlore
The people of Genshin often ask how death feels, some saying that they’re afraid it’s just an endless void of nothing. Some say that death is much more peaceful, but some also dream about the eternal afterlife. The Desert Dwellers believe that the Dream of the Golden Slumber is peaceful and will bring you closer to enlightenment, while children of the forest like the Viridescent Venerer believe that beyond life is an endless hunting ground. Some feel that death is just an experience, some say that death is fortunate.

  1. 6:43 "…but then we also wonder if Genshin has the equivalent of Hell or the underworld. Granted, I have no idea what Hu Tao says in Chinese, Japanese or Korean versions of the game and if it was the word hell…"
I guess this is referring to the line:
    "Somewhere close to "death,"
but not like the hell or underworld from the tales of old.
This is just a place where the Ley Lines tend to go a little bit haywire."
    in her story quest.

Checked back on the Travel Log, the line in Chinese is :
    "距离 ’死‘ 相当近的地方,
    但并不是传说中的 |地狱| 或者 |冥府| ,
    而是地脉撩乱比较集中的地方"

地狱 is basically hell, though 冥府 refers to the bureaucracy of hell, the place souls get processed.

(The latter's concept, which according to the most reliable of sources, TVTropes, is uniquely Chinese. /s
    XD)

So I guess the direct translation of what Hu Tao says for the second line would be: "but not like the hell or |冥府| from legend." So basically the same. Though this does show that that the belief of the traditional Chinese afterlife is a thing in Genshin, or at least in Liyue, apparently.

  2. 6:49 I went back to check Hu Tao's quest in CN to find out what she says in CN and had a more interesting realisation than just translation.

Hu Tao: "Somewhere close to "death," but not like the hell or underworld from the tales of old. This is just a place where the Ley Lines tend to go a little bit haywire."
The line above is basically the same in CN, but what's interesting along with the rest of the quest dialogue is that Hu Tao is saying hell and underworld are old concepts that may not be accurate or true nowadays especially to someone like her who can travel to the border of the real afterlife.

What the real afterlife is, is the memories inside the leylines, meaning when you die, you literally become a part of history inside the Irminsul. Your dreams and ambitions have ended, you become memories of the past, returning and stored back in the World Tree.

Hu Tao also further elaborates on the "border", which also means the same in CN.

Hu Tao: "The spirits we saw near the border are the dead that still long for the world of the living."
Hu Tao: "But I've never seen any of the previous directors there, not even once."

The spirits who are close to the border are all people who have lingering regrets, dreams that are unfinished, so they are not ready to pass on to the afterlife and become just a memory yet. The previous directors are all people who lived content lives and fulfilled their dreams so they don't linger at the border and pass straight into Irminsul.

So basically Irminsul = afterlife, which gives me another more far fetched realisation, if you can't die, it means you can't go into the afterlife, which means you can't or is rejected from Irminsul. Maybe the curse of Khaenriah is that Celestia has prevented or cut them off from the Irminsul, which is significant following many theories that Khaenriah is connected or built on top of the Irminsul and why Dainsleif is the Bough Keeper of the Irminsul. The punishment may be because Khaenriah has somehow exploited Irminsul and was punished to never be able to contact the tree ever again. And if you see it from another angle, Khaenriah was "erased from history", which is like getting "removed from Irminsul".

  3. something important was missing, tsurumi island, in its hidden mission after finishing everything, you have to help the 9 souls (I think it was only 9) to go to the other side and there it gives us more information than what was given with hutao.
It is mentioned that there is a "silver ark" and the "golden lady" had come to take away the souls that had been trapped for thousands of years in that anomaly, being us the ones who helped, there she gives us information that they are taken to a different plane to celestia where souls reside.

also in the desert and rather one of the views that are inside one of the cameras that leads us to the room of truth inside the mausoleum of king deshret tells us a description that the damned were sent to hell or rather to the ley lines, this connects with what was said with Saiguu within the ley lines those who fall there are absorbed together with their memories, it could be said that this would be hell.

There are many things such as that there are different planes, that the shadow of death only takes care of the souls but they must be able to "rise" to reach heaven, among other things.

PS: what was shown in the manhwa of celestia and the jail, there is also another much more accurate interpretation, that the place is not a jail but something much older and that sticks to ancient Greece, an amphitheater more similar to the one that appears in starwars episode I, II and III, where the gazebos met.

  4. God of Life
    God of Death
    God of Reason
    God of Space
    God of Time

I think we are getting introduced to each of these gods little by little.

The Inazuma Arc introduced Istaroth, The God of Time and Memories.

The Sumeru Arc is probably going to introduce us (or already has) to the God of Life especially because of the obvious "Flower" of Life.

I think Natlan Arc may be the one that introduces us to the God of Death because of all of the connections of fire to death and Natlan to reincarnation. Fire, feather, and death-related? Pheonix anyone?

I think the Cataclysm 500 years ago was the start or atleast an important point of a new samsara. Rukkhadevata created Nahida, her incarnation as Rukkhadevata is the incarnation of the God of Life. Ei is Makoto's "incarnation" in the new samsara as Makoto is the incarnation of the God of Time (both have similar personalities, time-related, and even worked together). I think Murata or the current Pyro Archon is the incarnation of the incarnation (Original Pyro Archon) of the God of Death.

This makes me think that for Fontaine, we are going to be introduced to the God of Space.

Dendro and Electro have a long history, both have incarnations heavily tied to Irminsul, their colors are inversions of one another, both have similar attributes such as dreams, and both of their Gnoses are Bishops (Electro confirmed, Dendro heavily implied since the Slime Theory proved to be 99.9% true with the Electro Gnosis being confirmed a Bishop).
We can also see they are opposites in the order of the artifacts.

Also, you drink liquids out of a goblet. Hydrology/Hydromancy anything hydro is related to the stars and space. Pyro and Hydro are inversions of one another so they are probably pairs much in likeness to the Gods of Time and Life.

The Last Chapter will introduce us to the Circlet of Logos. The God of Reason, the crown, the centerpiece, the most important part of the puzzle. God of Reason… Bronya… Ice… crazy connection.

  5. This isn't really a theory, but one thing I found interesting while playing is the similarities in particles that appear after a character dies, and when Paimon teleports away. This particle also comes up in one of travelers idle animations (I think) and looks very similar to the abyss. I'm not sure if there's anything there, but I found it really interesting and should dictate something lore wise. If only my brain could come up with something smart lol

  6. If theres a Shade of Death as you speculated at the end of the video then this could explain how Celestia can cast curses of immortality and diving even further into it, maybe the Sinner we saw in Caribert could be this God of Death thats why Clothars curse was lifted, and also perhaps this God didn't wish for a curse of immortality to exist and then he was cast as a Sinner and imprissoned.

  7. I think when gods die they descend to the real heaven not celestia but something higher then that this could be interesting because The gods in teyvat are all named after demons but I feel like once they finally pass on they are given new names if there are worthy enough to be a part of heaven. as for humans in teyvat I think The archons are responsible for their parting like how venti frees his people through the wind I may be wrong but it’s an interesting concept to have

  8. "In a world of gods and monsters, you would think-"

In this world of gods and MONSTERS, I thought that AT LEAST 1/3rd of the characters would look like big goofy bearded vikings or obviously inhuman beasts and even furries, but no. We've speedran more than half of the regions in less than 3 years and still, we do not have a single character that fits in any of these categories, and sadly, we probably never will.
Also before anyone talks about chinese regulations, blah blah blah, HoYo themselves are currently making a game with all of that (Zenless Zone Zero) + Dyslite is another popular gacha game from China and has even more character diversity than I could imagine.

  9. Ever since the very first cinematic we were greeted with, with the unknown god (AKA Kiana expy), I'm in the strong opinion that Teyvat is running in similar principles to the Underworld in SAO Alicization – that the whole place is a simulacrum, and the people are stored as data as Genshin's version of Fluctlights. Whether to find a way to eradicate Honkai or hide the world from the Honkai god, I'm not sure, but every new piece of information introduced points to that conjecture. Astrology being a reliable forecaster of the "future", Irminsul shenanigans, the power of the unknown god and the destruction of Khaenriah seems to treat it as such, and also the possible explanation of character expies from Honkai.

  10. I believe the lack of elaboration upon what happens after death in Teyvvat is on purpose, and the revelation is saved for a plot twist later on in the story.

Personally I believe the afterlife in Genshin Impact will resemble that of the Warcraft universe, where the souls of mortals(I'm including archons in this category) are batteries fueling an infernal machine of cosmic proportions. And while some of them may "ascend" to become cogs in the machine rather than fuel sources, in the end they're all prisoners in this recirculation pump, even the sustainer of heavenly principles.

  11. Dendrobium's descriptions show some interesting Inazuman belief of afterlife. “Inazumans believe that the souls of the fallen shall follow the winding paths of the bloodied dendrobiums into the next life, thus rejoining the eternal elemental cycle.”

  12. The Boatman from Boatman's task Quest from Tsurumi Island was tasked on guiding the souls of the deceased and mentions the 'Golden Halls upon the moon' & 'moon-mansion' which probably refers to the Lunar Palace.

So this makes me think that the Lunar Palace is actually the 'afterlife' and is ran by "the Lady of the Golden Hall" which is also mentioned by the Boatman.

  13. The thing that bothered me about witnessing Hu Tao and company's job was, who have those responsibilities in Mondstat and Inazuma? The spiritual system and culture appear to be different per nation.

  14. its important to remember that in the original Greek mythos which Genshin Impact has took quite a bit of inspiration from, the Underworld is not the same as hell where Hell in abrahamic depictions is a place where to punish the souls of bad people but in greek myth the Underworld is simply just a place for the souls of the deceased to go to, you could be either a good or bad person and either way you just get sent there since that is where most dead people go to.

  16. I was just thinking about this topic the other day so it's fun to see someone talking about it. I'm really curious if we'll ever learn more about a possible heaven/hell type of thing in Teyvat or if the afterlife works completely differently

  17. I was thinking that if you’re looking for topics that are more chill…..maybe look at the fatui harbinger’s names? In drama class we were talking about comedia del’arte, a type of theatre with stock characters, and a bunch of the names are the same as the harbingers, but the harbingers seem to be opposites of the stock characters personalities. I dunno, could be cool

  18. I just can’t help but think of characters like Hibiki, Qiqi and Hanachirusato/Saiguu, their stories make me so sad yet they have signs of still existing/living

Like being a metaphorical cloud cat watching over the Asase shrine
    Zombification
Being reborn as filth just to keep inazuma safe

    So sad…

I also imagine fate mostly controls the lives of everyone when you consider what dainsleif said at the end of Qiqi’s collected misc vid, while this is already partially shown to be true it’s still interesting and horrible that fate can do horrible things to people just because it can

I always believed the genshin world runs in a loop since I began, so it made me curious if dead people would eventually return to the cycle and exist again but perhaps that’s too twisted

For example I saw primo gems as primordial gems from bad timeline paths or dead universes, since you tend to get a lot of primos from doing horrible things in commissions and paths in hangouts, as for dead universes I just imagine that it’s like a big bang esc effect where matter/memories in primos from a previous universe/cycle still exist which makes them useful because they have the power to control fate/wish for things to happen like data bank for what may happen in the next cycle

Primogem definition- “A primordial crystalline gem beyond the mundane world. Shines with the condensed hopes and dreams of universes that once were”

We know that rocks hold memories and “see” and that the definition above shows that primos are like advanced stones that hold ambitions, they really are very suspicious for a currency

The word “condensed” is also pretty suspect, like bruh primos feel like the resin of existence itself

  19. the caribert quest actually very strongly implies that creatures affected by the curse of immortality are completely unable to die.
when they dig up the field and find the skeleton of clothar, dain's only explanation is that he must have found a way to end the curse of immortality.
earlier in the quest, clothar says this: "The agony of the cataclysm itself was already too much to bear… but then came the curse, robbing us any chance of release. All we can do is watch helplessly as our souls erode and our bodies decay".
so, with these two moments, it's borderline confirmed that the curse of immortality renders you completely unable to die. clothar wants to die, but can't. and dain says the only way to die is if you're able to get rid of the curse.

  20. I believe there are actually three realms in genshin
    Living realm
    Border realm
    And the dead realm
As seen in the cutscene of ei saying her final goodbye to Makoto. She mentions that she will be gone for good, so my theory is once someone dies in genshin and their unfinished businesses are complete, they will cease to exist, vanishing into the dead realm, where they can no longer interact with the living nor the border realm.
The only exception is if they are given an extra "chance", like Vanessa, and/or ascend to Godhood where the next generation of archons arise. As for Leylines aspirations, they are simply memories of previous events and not actual souls.

An overall conclusion, Celestia may be the one ruling over these three realms, and their job is to simply put the souls with no unfinished business into the dead realm, which is why we can see and probably communicate with Celestia, as it is currently in the living realm.
    (This is all theory)

  21. Guess what I think I know who is the primordial one.
    The name is Adam Kadmon.
Four shade is Atzilut (emanation) , Beriah (creation), Yetzirah (formation) and Asiyah (action).

  22. Since this is about life and death, is nobody gonna mention about how the church of Favonius are using Crosses in their graveyard? I always thought it was kinda off considering Genshin's reputation for leaving details in the game.
It doesn't make sense to me at all.🤔
Historically, the romans execute their criminals by crucifying them which later on the symbol will be adapted by christianity.🧐

I suddenly had the urge to watch travail in chinese and i felt that it was so troll that “The god of contracts, senselessly slaughtered as his people watched on in horror” is so freaking misleading because the english version makes it seem like zhongli murdered others(which he did but thats besides the point) but in Chinese it actually means morax was murdered refencing the start of the liyue archon quest

  24. From what I've understood, there really is no afterlife in Genshin. Once you die, you go into the leylines, where you get broken down into raw memories and elemental energy, which will eventually be used to create new life. The only real death is, ironically, immortality, because all your memories get eroded away before you die, meaning that you have nothing to pass on

The border between life and death from Hu Tao's story quest is just an entrance to the ley lines, and ghosts are just souls that have not passed through there yet

Then maybe being chosen to ascend to Celestia is just being taken out of this cycle by the gods. It could be a reward, or it might be a punishment. What if Vanessa or Guhua were so brave, that Celestia feared they might one day defy the heaves, so they took them out of the leylines and brought them to the prison in the sky, to prevent their ambitions from lingering in the world
