The Problem With Genshin Impact's Weapon System

Earlier this year I made a video discussing the many issues behind Genshin Impact’s artifact system and unfortunately the weapon system is just as bad if not worse. So let’s talk about everything wrong with it!

  1. My mistake: primordial jade cutter and haran geppaku futsu are both better than black sword statistically speaking. Looking back I should've double checked my math. Although I still stand by the notion that the difference in strength is nowhere near enough to warrant the cost to obtain them.

  2. Weapon banner is a waiting game. You should only pull on a banner when you want BOTH weapons. If you don't want both, you have to wait till the next banner. I'm saying this as a dolphin. Sure, getting Aqua for my C1 Yelan would be nice, but ultimately it won't be much better than the Favonius Warbow I have on her now since I'd have to get extra ER on my artifacts. Oh and there's a 50% chance I'll get a weapon I won't use for the foreseeable future that I might get on the standard banner anyway. The damage increase should be the last thing you worry about when pulling on weapon banners. It's not as important as you think.

  3. The weapons in general aren't an issue imo, but the way they're acquired. Simply having the fate points carrying over or making it like the character banners is such a huge step in the right direction while maintaining the gacha part of it (pulls are still needed to take advantage of the guarantee). I do think however that "higher rarity = more generalist" just opens the issue of other future weapons rendered useless. Staff of Homa and Mistsplitter are for the most part, usable on anyone and everyone because only a snippet of their passives are actually "locked" behind few users (Homa's being the <50% HP requirement to proc additional damage that only Hu Tao and Xiao can do + Mistsplitter's Element-infused NA and Zero Energy requirements for 2 stacks; which from the current roster outside constellations iirc only the Kamisato siblings could do effectively. Keqing can utilize it fully, but her low cost burst renders one stack difficult to maintain since it fills so damn fast). Tailor-making the weapon to the user (such as the case with something like Redhorn Stonethresher; a weapon that's phenomenal on Itto and Noelle but a stat stick needing Atk% mitigations from artifact substats on the rest) imo is better simply because there's a reason to still want the other weapons the game has to offer.

The craftables are okay actually, but the billet drop rates are so dismal and there's very few of them that are amazing on refines (Whiteblind, Prototype Amber, and Amenoma Kageuchi are the best ones to refine imo among the current craftables; and even then the Whiteblind is only good on 2-3 characters at best). Not to mention there are some characters that cannot get away with f2p options, which opens the Royal/Blackcliff series that overall are really dookie and only serve to make stats look good or even worse; make the BP weapons the only real viable non-5* choice for them (Xiao is the biggest victim of this; hell the best F2P weapon for him is the Favonius Lance simply because of the high base damage or sometimes a freaking White Tassel).

Content-wise, I do think that 4-star weapons are more than plenty to clear content. It's just that 5-star weapons almost always have Crit substats that make Artifact farming easier and potentially relying less on overpowered units (that aren't necessarily someone's favorite characters) or the ever-tiring TTDS + Bennett combo.

  4. i got the mistsplitter at 20 pity because i really wanted it for bennett and ayaka, but now that I realize how lucky and rare it is for that to happen, i think i'm gonna quit while i'm ahead and pass on weapon banners from now on…

  5. I agree with the general issue involving narrow applicability of any given weapon. But arguing that they're bad specifically because "you don't have the character's full potential unlocked" is an argument against the game itself. You can say precisely the same thing about constellations; while any 5-star is more than good enough at C0, they're also nowhere near as strong as any one of them can be at C6, and C6 is wholly unattainable to anyone who isn't either A. a whale; or B. a player actively willing to save for months and give up six other characters for a single C6.

The main problems with 5-star weapons to me is the narrow usefulness of many of them, alongside the predatory costs of the Epitomized Path system (which is undoubtedly BETTER than the initial system but still a far cry from reasonable for something that at R0 is usually only marginally better than many 4-stars). But the argument that they're bad because they've locked a character's full potential away is just another way to say that the gacha system shouldn't even exist, and we have no chance as a community for ever advocating for such a change, whereas we COULD succeed at advocating for more universal weapon designs or a better pity system.

  6. I don't understand why people think Aqua Simulacra is a poor choice for everyone but yelan. It's litteraly on par with staff of homa. 20% bonus damage is a 2 piece noblesse or a raiden E on your character with basically no condition for activation. The only thing you won't probably use is the HP buff it gives. It's half passive and the less important one that you don't use… 88%CD 20% Bonus Dmg… i will never understand.

The rest of the video is cool, i don't mind a weapon that everybody can use but if it's the character BiS it has to work better with the character than the others, like homa and simulacra are on point for me.

  7. Well said sir, I completely agree. another solution might be a 5* version of 3 & 4* weapons. Along with weapon skins to change the appearance.

Then I would spend the money

  8. I think mihoyo would get a lot more people to summon on the weapon banner if pity carried over to the next banner. Aswell as their being a 50/50 added to the banner because the Epitomized path option is really a trick, as you need to pull the wrong weapon twice before you can get the weapon of your choice. I think it would be better if the weapon banner got changed to be more like the character banner. Where there are standard weapons you can win and after you pull a standard 5 star weapon the next 5 character weapon is guaranteed to be the current limited weapon. But I think mihoyo makes too much money on the weapon banner to change it. I could see mihoyo changing the weapon banner when genshin is 5 years old and the whales have moved on to newer games.

  9. I went through a bunch of calculations today before going for the weapon banner today – I wanted a 5* bow for Yelan, and I had a roughly 37-38% chance to get a bow. I ended up with Amos' bow, which is a really good bow – but not the best for her. It's a little frustrating, knowing that there are two bows that I could have gotten that would have been better for her, but I'm also pretty darn grateful that I got a bow at all. This is the second time I've ever done weapon banner, and I'm definitely not going to be spending any more money on it.

  10. I’ve been playing since damn near release and i fr only got 1 5* weapon compared to the number of characters i got, they fr gotta do sum cuz ion even got enough copies of 4* weapons either, I’m still to this day running Skyrider Sword on my Xingqiu cuz ion have a second SacSword

  11. Something that pisses me off is that the 5-stars are over-saturated fortnite puke colors while the 4-stars usually match character's designs better. eg Amenoma has the same color palette as Ayato and Ayaka but sadly they aren't BiS.

  12. Good points. I agree that weapon diversity at the top (5*) makes it less appetizing to bother pulling for. In fact, I don't because 1) it's luck-based whether you get what you want and 2) I find in RPGs with more luck-based mechanics, you can skip a lot of grind by trying a generically good build that works in 80% of content with about 80% efficacy. If you're grinding for something that works with 100% efficacy but in only 10% of content, it's simply not worth the time.

I'm almost surprised that Genshin has not introduced weapon trials like they do character trials.

  13. Weapon banners are pretty much made for whales only, they were never meant for f2p to roll on. you can tell since the early weapon banners had no pity for the new weapons and even with the pity added in for "newer" banners, you need to hit it multiple times if your unlucky. it is purely to get whales to spend money on it. If it wasnt profitable mihoyo would have changed the way the banner works ages ago but they havent so they know whales will pay for this.

5* weapons are a luxury, it would be like paying $1mill for a fast car even though you cant really drive faster than the speed limit most of the time, people do this to show off. The 5* weapons are the same, either they are too situational or they overkill most enemies.

  14. I just spend because i like what i see, but for anyone who cant go all the way to step 3 on weapon banner think before doing it…but u prove valid point here my hats to you💪🤘

  15. Solid points. I also think it's a lot more satisfying to make a character with a weapon & artifact set that wasn't made specifically for them, because it feels more personal and like it's YOUR character build rather than THE character build.

  16. mihoyo has been stingy with genshin
while compared to honkai where we could craft certain premium weapons, genshin so far has just allowed us to craft some 4* weapons with less good stats and passive compared to 4* gacha weapons (and some 3* weapons too) on top of billets from weekly bosses that sometimes wouldn't drop throughout the week (i'm on 3 weeks streak of no weapon billets so far)

i think this is also part of the problem.. i just want more billets and more weapon variety to craft :<

  17. The problem for mhy is that if they release a 5* claymore (for example) that works for almost all claymore users, players won't bother wishing the next 5* claymore bc they alr got an all-rounder. A claymore working for 3 ppl may sound like a good balance, but I'm guessing that would be also be enough for some players to not roll for claymores anymore, given the horrid banner pity

  19. Your comparison to McDonald or fast food chain is actively flawed
fast food like fries and drink they can give it as a bonus for free cause they know that the ceiling they can sell those items for is those item price which is not much ,
meanwhile for weapon banner the ceiling was 90 wishes 3 times which is much higher than just a fries or drink.
yes it would create the incentive to go for character but that isn't what they want ,they want the Character to be Incentive for weapon just to make that 90% experience into a 100% experience NOT weapon be an Incentive for character.
BUT the weapon banner ceiling is outrageous!! 90 wishes 3 times you kidding me!?
the least they can do was changing the ceiling on weapon banner to be the same as a character banner and they couldn't even done that , I feel this so hard cause rn I was thinking if I should wish for Yomiya in the up coming banner and I know well that if I roll for her I gonna have to get Thundering Pulse for full experience which I just doesn't have the capability to do so right now , so I just decided to skip her banner and choose to wish for unit I like and I know I can get their signature weapon as well.

  20. Literally the only thing I would change on the weapon banner is make it so its a 50/50 instead of needing to lose twice before its guaranteed. I lost twice on Ventis weapon banner at hard pity and then got elegy around 80 wishes, I do NOT want to pull on the weapon banner again because of the mere IDEA that I could lose both times again. If it was like the normal 50/50 I wouldn't care nearly as much.

  21. Despite the passive, aqua simulacra really isn’t that good on Yelan. A lot of 4 star or even 3 star options are similarly as competitive with it. It’s way more of a general weapon than this video leads on.

  22. I absolutely love this video and not because I hate Mihoyo’s bad practices when it comes to getting money from us, but because I’ve been saying this since it became more prevalent to get 1 weapon that only 1 character could truly benefit from. The Aqua Simulacra was my last call in the meta shifting closer to Honkai, where weapons are going to be more important than just getting the character alone.

It’s definitely a bold claim, but after investing a lot of time into learning about Honkai you can see the same practices happening in Genshin. All we need is a real reason to grind these characters out to their best performance and it’ll be here for everyone to see.

This was my first video of yours to see and a damn good one at that. Looking forward to sharing more opinions like this!

  23. Forget weapons, I have never seen Genshin even alter a single thing in their updates, it's literally a carbon copy every single month and so Genshin weapon system will remain till they stop making money. There are enough players helping mihoyo achieve this and they are making more than they deserve at the moment so they won't bother doing something good. As the saying goes, Don't fix which ain't broke.

  24. thanks to this video,i reinforce the fact i didn't pull for the jade cutter or geppaku gutsu, instead i decided to get the black sword, economic, saved myself probably a lot of primos, and even then i have an absolutely capable Ayato, and the black sword also serves for other characters of course
however,i think that how exclusive banner weapons are is more so you keep the weapon with that particular character, say,Ayato keeps geppaku futsu,Ganyu gets to keep Amos bow, because it won't matter what happens, said characters will take total advantage of the bonuses the weapon gives them
let's say the more versatile a weapon is,weaker it is,in terms of,being a 4star,less stats or less variety in their effects, and 5 stars are just too overloaded with effects that will benefit their particular character

  25. Admittedly I'm a bitter Free-To-Play, but personally if I were to change weapon banners, I'd make it that the Weapon Banner has a separate kind of wish for it that costs like 20 primo each.

Granted, I am NOT the guy to know economic profits but like… When you can already end up spending like 200 dollars on a character, you should be able to get their weapon much more easily, and I think that being able to get the weapon for slightly more than the price of a 10 pull makes sense. Especially when the game wants you to then roll for 5 copies of the thing for max refinement.

  26. i pulled only in two weapon banners: the haran one, for my kaeya (it looks beautiful omgggg) and the aqua simulacra one for my ganyu but didn’t get it. and yeah, i only pull weapons when they match someone’s colour palette

  27. I’ve spent over $1000 on characters and nothing on weapons because I hate the pity system for it. I’d love to get the weapons but I’d rather get characters. I’ve only gotten 1 5* banner weapon

  28. All balance aside the weapons just generally aren't fun, having the weapon of choice on a character doesn't add any entertainment value to actually using that character, as a whale it may be a waste of money and as a f2p a waste of effort when u could easily save that wishing on something that will actually diversify your gameplay experience. Mind you this issue is less to do with the design of the weapon and more so the means of acquiring it

  29. “Fullest capacity” of Aqua lol

Yeah but you’re grossly over exaggerating how little that “20% damage increase” is.
Yoimiya, Childe, Ganyu, etc can all use Aqua. You just have to compensate for the lower atk by running a Bennett (common on a Yoimiya team) or any combo of atk buffs (Sara, elegy, Milileth, pyro resonance, etc).

  30. I got the gf Yalen, Yalen's Sig bow(after failing twince and getting two Jade Spears) and went for the Redhorn(failed three times, would have been two but I forgot to set my preferred weapon on the banner). Those weapon banner rates are truly abysmal…
