when i saw a video titled "the normal attack curse", i thought it was going to be about dehya's anti-synergy with characters like yelan/xq/beidou whose burst procs rely on normal attacks. the video i watched was definitely not what i was expecting, but i really do resonate with it a lot 🙁 the normal attack strings from countless characters are drop-dead gorgeous and unless you go out of your way to build them physical, you'll never really be able to see them in game.
shenhe and yun jin's normals had my jaw dropping, and as you pointed out thoma's are so satisfying and bouncy i love them. the first thing i ever try out when doing character trials for new units in this game is look at their normal attack string in detail, and it often ends up being the first and last time i ever get to study them 🙁
I feel so bad for Xiao in this regard, yeah his NA actually do pretty good damage, but does anyone actually use them instead of the massive damage that comes from pogo mode? I myself am guilty of this, and it sucks because he has some of the coolest normal attacks in the entire game
so you want to be able to do normal attacks for the animations of it, but also have it be viable from a meta standpoint? bro you already said it yourself just forget about the meta, im playing physical amber with yunjin myself. like yes it is weak, but it is also satisfying
Really should have added that Dehyas N1 can RANDOMLY miss. Her normals aren't just bad, they are the worst. No one else has this issue.
Kuki is the first character who attacks with a weapon type different from what she has equipped?
Umm, what about Childe? His weapon is a bow, yet he can switch to a dual dagger mode.
Nitpicks aside – I agree completely. It's sad that some characters have cool looking attacks that go completely unused.
I’m late but I want to shoutout to how badly this game handles normal attacks that it extends to characters that are normally seen as “normal attack” characters
Ayato has a skill that makes him deal “normal attack” damage.
His actual normals mean nothing.
He’s not a normal attack character, he’s a skill character that does normal attack damage which in a practical sense makes you understand how useless normals truly are on 99% of the cast.
If a non-passive elemental skill or burst is the only thing that makes the “normal attack” usable then they essentially function the same as every other character in the game. This includes Noelle, Diluc, Childe, Xiao, Hu Tao, Yoimiya, Raiden, Kokomi, Itto, Ayato, Cyno, Nilou, and Wanderer. I’m ready to excuse some of these like Childe because his bow uses aimed shot although it’s not good, but most of them are this case where skill/burst = normal attacks and they cannot exist without each other. The most egregious case is Ayato where he has an entire set of normal attacks but despite being a “normal attack” character they are completely worthless.
The subset of characters that can actually utilize normals as an active part of their kit is tiny
Eula Razor (normals but their Phys so it’s not even good)
Klee Yanfei (Catalysts that gain significant damage increases by interacting with both their normals and CAs *I like them*)
Ayaka Alhaitham (Normals rely on a passive to function so they’re not completely reliant on a skill)
I loathe this part of genshin character design and wish it would change. At least Alhaitham exists in the right direction.
Main issue with this is that Mihoyo sees QS Burst teams as more effective while the creative side makes the character as appealing as possible in order to sell, so in the end we only see a fraction of the characters animations in game because Quickswap leads to more people spending money to have more 5* units instead of making units work by themselves and be actually fun on their own
The problem is that Genshin is by nature a very easy game. You can make almost anyone work in any role, meaning almost anyone can be a normal attack dps. But if anyone can be a normal attack dps, then why would you ever bother using Jean phys when Kaeya has higher scalings? The reason to pull for a character, their gameplay identity, their utility- it rarely comes from NA. Ganyu happens to have a unique CA mechanic, but in terms of NA we got nothing. People want to feel like they got the bang for their buck, so they're not very inclined to go physical damage on Ayato, for example, since they already have that playstyle open to them. Very few people also build Keqing physical- because at that point, why even use Keqing?
I think a large part of why Dehya is so hated is her status as a 5*. Were she 4* and much more easily obtainable, her flaws could much more easily be overlooked.

When I have time, I like to do juggle combos with characters just to make use of the normal and charge attack animations.
For instance, If you use Geo travelers charge attack to launch an enemy, you can keep them in the air by doing a normal attack into the skill. You can then jump on top of the rock and do more normals to keep the combo going.
It's nice to see that while the system doesn't cater to using attacks in that fashion, it's still allowing you to make things happen that you wouldn't expect.
Choosing favorites and least favorites is actually harder than I thought it would be. Looking at everything from kit to character design to personality to voice acting.
I voted in the post but I want to say that it was a hard choice. For favorite characters, I have to say Yae Miko, Ganyu, and Yoimiya, with an honorable mention to Keqing and Hutao. For least favorites, I have to say Lisa, Kujou Sara, and Wanderer, with an honorable mention to Alhaitham and Ningguang. There are other characters I really like but theres something about them that I strongly dislike, and the opposite is true for characters that I really dislike. While I really love everything about Xinyan, shes just not that strong outside of the initial burst damage and has competing stat priorities of attack and defense. And while I hate everything about Barbara, I just cant deny that she is a very powerful teamwide healing nuke and solid early game exploration healer, making it so that you dont need to rely on the statues of the seven to heal your party when your characters are weak and you are still learning the game.
I wrote a long comment about how you left out many aspects of the game but then I think to myself, why the heck would I want to get into an argument about Genshin?
The real problem in genshin is you can't afford damage. A whale and a fish will complain about totally different things.
Dont be surprised if we eventually get a gun user who throws pistols at the end of the combo
Apparently mihoyo didn't able to let us build normal attack teams with whatever character we like.
Even if they have released new artifacts and characters, they still didn't grasp that chances to develop them into new fighting style, some new artifacts are barely used because they're not much useful than old artifacts.
The only way to make every character able to do decent normal attack damage, is have C6 Shenhe and team with Chongyun but what the hell, not everyone is a whale.

Oh god. Dehya normal attacks are so bad. I love the first two. But the last two are horrible.

I've noticed a trend personally that, outside of a select few, the passive, non-aggressive characters are dps and really strong (Ganyu, Hu Tao, Heizou) while the powerful fighters are meant to be supports or are just weak in general (Venti, Zhongli, Klee, Deyha)

Neat video, but please don't use interpolation for slow motion like at 7:20 because it just looks terrible and makes things harder to see since the interpolation generates weird artifacts 😉

Zhongli could’ve been a catalyst user based on his personal geo construct polearm.
Considering how they make so many characters scale off ANYTHING EXCEPT attack, have they possibly though, "Hey, instead of excluding character damage to a skill, maybe we just have the scaling on the basic attack in the first place? Maybe have an HP scaling physical DPS? At this point, we have EM scaling characcters which adds so much damage to teams. To suggest HP scaling on the basic would break the game is silly at this point.
But at least we know that they don't intend to help out any of the characters in this video. Even though some of them could really use it (I want to use Dori… but her kit's abilities last so little time its annoying).
Look, i love dehya and i will keep using her despite the abysmal damage compared to other characters, and I'm an advocate of using characters that just look or are cool rather than one's that're meta, but to turn a blind eye to the very prominent issues is just foolish. Justice for normal attacks.
