It doesnt make any sense that the adepti had never saw rex lapis in his human form. since, its established that Gouba knows him, Xiao seems to ask about him and Cloud retainer allows him to chill in his abode and madam ping even invited him for tea heck Even Azdaha knew about him as well..
The weird thing is Ganyu does not seem to know zhongli
if zhongli have the power of appearing in dreams, headcanon is he interrupts keqing's or ningguang's dream and trolls them lmao
there's definitely only a few people/adepti that know. he made sure to only make it obvious to the ones that he may be trusting of. Ningguang's voiceline indicates to me she would use him too as pawn, if she knew his identity she may be troublesome to him a bit. Ningguang may have made that up, knowing he's alive, but not knowing the identity.
There’s also Hu Tao who has high suspicions on him, not confirmed, but still ( I mean, she do work with him so that makes sense )

So Rex Lapis had a backup plan he knew his adepti buddies will go into a fit of rage when they find out he 'died', so he communicated through Ningguang telepathically giving a hint that he's still alive. Smart
