Are you saying people who filled out the survey are those who care enough about the game to fill it out to begin with? I feel like that audience would have most characters in their roster anyhow if there were to be bothered to fill the survey.
I've been using the same team (hu tao vape & ayaka freeze) for a whole year everytime abyss is resets and always 36 stars first try, so i couldn't care less about this usage rate
Usage rate in abyss is skewed on a per patch basis as well. Right now the buffs are highly favoring bloom teams, so that will bring other teams down a bit.
This is more like a "what combination of characters work together most often during X patch" than "what characters are the strongest".
"Recency bias is a thing. If you pull a new character and decide not to play them, it doesn't make much sense"

I mean, ever since Hoyoverse disabled the ability to scrape data from their site, usage rates have become less useful, because it relies on self-reporting. Self-selected data reporting is a huge methodological issue in itself. (And that applies to literally any data analysis you could do on Genshin stuff, not just usage rate). That people can lie about their data to skew the results, or bombard the system with data designed to reach a particular results are also concerning, but self-selection is probably an even bigger bias (and one that cannot be corrected for without Hoyoverse re-allowing data scraping).
So, whatever value usage rate has (and i believe it has some), it's spoiled by not being able to trust the usage rates we can get as being real.
CN clearly diverges from the rest of the world with International being dominant. (Rest of the world has Raiden National dominant, at least last i knew). And this isn't a new thing – International has always seen relatively more use in CN than elsewhere. You talk about CN prefering comfort characters more, but I feel like the rest of the world favors comfort team comps more. (Raiden National is a very forgiving team composition that you basically can't screw up, whereas International is harder to implement). And back when we could still scrape data from Hoyoverse, RN and International were competitive on average room clear times, frequently trading off which one was faster from room to room.
But it isn't surprising to me that Childe's use and International's use track each other pretty closely – there's virtually no other Childe team that sees play in SA12.

In some ways I can see people wanting to use their new character in the abyss, however depending on how much you prepare in advance and how much resin you have, their level and skills might not be high enough to use them easily in the abyss for the 1st reset after their banner. In that case I'm sure many people just use their current well invested teams to get 36 stars.
I'd say I'm not surprised with Kazuha & Zhongli having more usage rate than the standard character's because I'm a Player who started playing right after the launch but still haven't got Mona & Diluc. I also got Qiqi just recently 😄 ik it's sad

It's not that I trust these "datas" but Genshin is a casual, noobfriendly game. It isn't a suprise to see kokomi and zhongli as top picks. They are far from being strong picks in abyss, but they make bad players clear more easily since they don't need to dodge or even think about strong rotations. As long as you have good artifacts you can carry these characters without any effort

NGA always have the worst usage rates, there are many other CN usage rate sources, with much more reliable data, NGA usage rates has way smaller sample sizes, and they use surveys instead of checking your hoyolab page, so people bs their data. BTW when it comes to Childe and International team on NGA, the data might need some reconsideration, since that forum is full with Childe fans, Childe and the International team's usage rate usually is much higher on this forum than others

At the time when spiralabyss web can't collect data from Hoyolab anymore, it's no longer valid. Bcs before that happen, they also have team average cleartime data which is so usefull to know which party is the real deal. Individual character usage rate is straight bs.

Obviously the data is not too reliable because of the small sample but we can kinda see whats currently popular among abyss players, basically the "trend", zhongli, Raiden, kazuha, Bennet had they trending moment, so I don't see the issue with Kokomi and Nilou shining for a bit
I think nilou is a character that got released too fast. For a character that needs dendro when there are only 2 dendro available in her first release is unfair. One of them is in standard banner and one of them is 4*. Me myself been liking 4* more but that didn't apply to everyone. They need 5* and it locked on standard banner that only god knows when you got him. I've been playing fir 2 years and not even a single qiqi came home
I also think the dendro element itself is quite niche since it quite focus on EM that made support for dendro kinda niche to other chars like kuki.
