Is Genshin Impact Experiencing Power Creep?

Ever since Shenhe’s release, I’ve been mulling over whether or not Genshin’s going down the trend of releasing better versions of existing characters already. And with Yelan’s introduction, I wanted to make a video detailing my thoughts on power creep in Genshin Impact, and whether or not it’s going to affect the game’s balance going forward.

  1. Survivability is actually pretty relevant if you lack certain characters to achieve it.
Sure, you can just "not get hit", but the damage reduction that Xingqiu's swords can provide can save you from being oneshot or maintain your shield durability in the face of powerful attacks or unavoidable AoE enemy effects.
This is especially true if, heaven forbid, you don't have a shield character like Zhongli to save you. My Noelle's barrier is only so strong, and her shield uptime alone at higher floors is not always fast enough to keep my squishier characters alive unless I field her longer to heal. Having super armor so you don't flinch at glancing hits as well as a modest heal is also definitely a plus when fighting hordes or fricking Rift Hounds.
There is also one thing that Xinqiu's blades do that also ties in with Barbara's own skill utility:
They apply Wet status passively to close opponents while active (not just yourself).
(Obviously though, this condition can have its drawbacks (accidentally 0 dmg Vaporize while trying to Reverse Melt can be…irritating), but it is still a part of his extra utility.)

  2. yelan is kinda jack of all trades, wether openworld/abyss/domains

her charge faster than ganyu, a hit-all too for farming, she has sprint too, and can deal dmg, can be sub dps, can be dps, can be support

  3. Here's the problem with your video.
    1. Power creep only applies if the object in question is superior in it's perfect form.
    2. The objects in this game has varying bonuses every ascension.
    3. The objects in this game scale far harder on perfect artifacts the lower star level they are.
    4. 4 star units are often bloated with flat damage bonuses to 5 star units multipliers making them superior in the long haul.

This is already obvious if you haven't noticed already.

  4. Xingqiu is a 4 star and Yelan is a 5 star so…
Xingqiu is more of an off-field support, but Yelan can both dish it out on field, or off field too. She's not better than my Ganyu in sheer damage output but due to her crowd control E ability, works great to reduce the grind off ley lines and commissions.

  5. Imo the most powercreep genshin experienced was from Ganyu's release to Hu Tao's Release. Ganyu made freeze op, Xiao was amazing in destroying one-plungeable waves of trash mobs, and Hu Tao's single target was leagues above Diluc's. Sure, old 4* characters are getting one-upped by new 5*s like razor by eula and yelan in some cases by xingqiu, but they're 5*s, if they weren't way better than their 4* counterparts what's even the point?
Raiden was definitely an interesting case, she introduced huge amounts of damage on her own and the single-target-meta team Rational, but solocarry Raiden isn't the highest DPS ever and rational mainly excels at single target, and idk if it's even better than hu tao, and if she is, only slightly.

Aside of that, imo genshin has handled powercreep quite well, rather introducing characters who exceed at slightly different situations than others but lacking in others. Ayato is a good experience of that. He's still very viable in both freeze and national, but not better than Mona or Kokomi in the former or Childe in the latter.

  6. I think powercreep was already visible since HuTao

Difference is. Powercreep does literally nothing for the game's difficulty.

So all it does it let you win even easier than you already are

  7. I've never thought about it that way, but yeah I guess what you are saying (at the end of the video) can be true. I for one tend to enjoy the fact that Genshin being "easy" to complete and not demand that you absolutely need to have the latest units to succeed to be a good thing! I mean, I'm not even F2P but even I can't deny the cost that it takes to get all the new units (especially if you go for the character itself and their signature weapon). But it's not only that, it's also the fact that I don't necessarily "like" all the units. For example, I didn't pull for Yelan even though I liked her playstyle (since I tested her in the test runs, archon quest and combat event) because I'm just not that into her as a character. I'm thinking about pulling for her later though, and the fact I can even feel like I could still pull for her later, I feel like is a good thing. If Genshin demanded that we pull for every unit every single time, then what's the point of reruns? I feel like they tried to implement some kind of incentive to go for the latest units back when they introduced the Rifthounds and Kokomi in Spiral Abyss. At that time, the buffs we received from Spiral Abyss were clearly meant for the character being featured in the banners. Now I feel like it's less specific and actually it applies to more than one character. So maybe Hoyoverse themselves don't necessarily feel like they need to force us into pulling for new units. And when you see how good the Yelan banner sales went (and the Ayaka rerun and Raiden/Kokomi reruns went too), they clearly don't need to!

  8. genshin is not a harder game to began with, i dont even use benny or xingqu to play the game or even use in abyss i have no use for them as game is easy enough tho i can def see people having sruggles/trouble if they dont know what they doing and other stuff tho i dont think the game is having a power creep as of yet

  9. The only reason people still use xingqiu is because they don't have kokomi. Kokomi overshadows him in every way. She applies water far more consistantly than he does, she does more damage due to her sheer 5 star stats despite not critting, and she's a ranged healer. She's also a catalyst user the best support weapon type in the game. Kokomi just wasn't as popular as mihoyo was expecting. She's fully meant to replace him, but hydro is lacking in units in general. Which is why yelan was released at all. Hydro didn't have a real bow user. Just childe who wasn't really a bow user.

Diluc is probably always going to be good. He's just not good right now due to the content built for pyro users to be less effective which is exclusively hu tao's fault. Though I suspect the biggest reason no one uses Diluc anymore isn't even for gameplay reasons. I think it's just because they don't like his character as much as other pyro units and they don't like his playstyle. Both of these have to be true to use a character. If one of them is wrong people often don't use them with the primary exception being bennett. Who is probably the most hated character in the game. People use him because he's so powerful as a support so even if you don't like him he's on the field for half a second so it doesn't matter.

The purpose of the national team is to be a relatively low budget way to clear the game. It's just by now even free to play have gotten at least 2 guarenteed 5 stars they wanted by now. One of them being Raiden for the National Raiden Variant isn't too difficult to have by now. Thus why a lot of the chars that are on it are still on it. It's less powercreep and more that the meta changes which elements are best to use and right now pyro units uses are lacking. The 5 star electro units except keqing are also some the strongest brute force chars to exist, but that's less power creep and more that electro has to be stronger cuz it's a weak element. Which will prob change when Dendro comes out.

  10. Xingqiu, Xiangling, and Bennett should be nerfed or powercrept to the point of complete irrelevancy before 3.0 is released. And no, Yelan wasn’t good enough to send XQ to the trash.

  11. Other people: Can Yelan replace Xingqiu?
Me: Okay, I've gotta beat this leyline monolith on 11-1. I've got Xingqiu paired with Ayato in one half of Abyss for my taser team and I'm not good at Childe rotations, so I wonder whether Yelan will be a good substitute for Tartaglia in Childe National on the other half…

(Spoilers: she works wonderfully for me as a Tartaglia replacement, rotations with her are much more forgiving! I'm super happy I picked her up. My teams were Ayato/Albedo/Fischl/Xingqiu for 11-1-1 and Sucrose/Bennett/Xiangling/Yelan for 11-1-2, surprisingly easy clear.)

  12. I've been referring to most of the Inazuma characters as Inazuman Better versions of Mondstadt units (example, Yoimiya is Inazuman Better Amber, Kazuha is Inazuman Better Jean etc) but it never occurred to me to consider that power creep
