  1. My main problem with the characters is that they all use the same face except the eyes. Like give the characters different noses. Maybe even give them different chins.

  2. Honestly, I just want a chubby playable character, like the NPC Bridget or the nun in the cathedral (who a daily quest line is dedicated to) whose name I can't really recall right now. Fat people can be athletic, and it doesn't make sense to me that characters whose backstories make reference of having bigger body types (Ganyu) or make a significant portion of their living on taste testing and enjoying food (Xiangling) wouldnt have some extra meat on their bones.
I don't fully understand why we don't have a child boy character as playable yet, since Ruu (imo) would make complete sense and wouldn't require a new playable character model, since children at that age all look the same. (The reasons I can think of for why we don't make me uncomfortable.)
And agreed on the buff character model—its the main reason why I didn't pull for Itto, since I got my hopes up for a new character model type.

  3. Welcome to anime Valk. Anime characters are known for their “same face syndrome” and lack of diversity in body type etc if you were to remove everything and look only at the base body features. It’s also how people who learn to draw anime start drawing it. Rigid formulas.

Edit: Do I think it’s right? No not necessarily. Representing more body types etc as well as skin colours is a good thing. Something to keep in mind about Japan though is that it is a widely homogenized society which definitely would play a part into it, not to mention the strict beauty standards. Mihoyo/Hoyoverse, while being a Chinese company has also been pretty clear with the idea of having a Japanese anime style game.

  4. I know that diversity is a touchy topic in games especially anime styled ones. People get mad when you criticise lack of diversity because they see it as wanting hoyoverse to pander to a group or ‘forcing an agenda’. I remember the whole ‘boycott Genshin’ twitter drama. Admittedly it was blown out of proportion for fairly innocent things but it did show that Genshin is lacking in diversity with how characters look. There are a lack of darker skin characters but I think that will be change since newer regions are going to be based on areas that do have darker skinned people. So I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt there.

However it’s getting really annoying seeing characters being fit into the same five archetypes we already have. For example, Itto has such skinny arms when in his own reveal artwork, they were more buff. Albedo used to have longer hair too. They don’t seem to want to break the mould too much because of the added cost and work of making new rigs and how they interact with the world. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a character who’s extremely gluttonous but ends up looking slim.

I will say that I’m not sure if the if character design is the majority drive for players to get a character they want. I remember when Kazuha had everyone excited for a new anemo unit from a new location. That hype died slightly when beta testers and theory crafters said he was a 5 star sucrose. Now he’s the most wanted characters because of how powerful he is but not his character design. Compare that to kokomi. Infamous for being the lowest selling banner worldwide but did very well in Japan. She was considered the worst 5 star at the time which explains the low sales but her voice and look appealed with Japanese fans. It’s a mixed bag really. There’s no exact way to determine whether someone will wish for power or aesthetics but I assume it’s power first then aesthetics. You can have the most unique looking characters but if they play bad or don’t have huge numbers, then the majority of players won’t care.

This isn’t an excuse to skimp out on designs though.

Personally I do want older looking characters with facial hair. I also think that they should add a male counterpart to the little girls we have. Would be funny having a child army of boys.

If they don’t do something to change the design formula like the actual day to day gameplay formula, people will start to lose interest.

  5. I agree with u, i want to see buff men with beards but we need to remember this is a Chinese game. We cant blame them for "lacking diversity" because this is the ideal body/looks in China. Clear skin and slim figures(including men)

Westerner's standards shouldnt be pushed to us asians. So people i see asking for overweight and black characters shouldnt complain if they get none.

  6. I'm personally not into big buff men but it would be nice to have them despite the niche market. I'll never forget when they nerfed Itto muscles :sadge:. I think what I am more concern is when Mihoyo is really playing it safe with character outfits. With the recent official release of Heizou, I realized that character outfits are starting to look the same as well. This is why I like this one artist on YT who guess Genshin character outfits based on hints given to him. We could've gotten much more diverse outfits smh

  7. They desperately need at least variations in height. Especially for me. They either look like men or like little boys. Albedo at least should have been in between, but they didn't have a model for it.
They also need variety in the animations. It's kinda cringy now how every character of the same model use the same sprinting animation.

There's different combat animations for everyone. I don't see why not make it for their animations as well.
