In this video I go over the most important differences between the two game and what it is that makes one better than the other. However, do keep in mind that these are just my opinions and you are welcome to disagree and leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Two completely different core experiences and genre…
People will jump on the hot new thing, but they're two different types of games.
I'm still holding my breath on how bad the grind is going to be for HSR. That and the powercreep. It's still too early. Not a lot of content.
But turn-based combat suits me better than Genshin's stagnating reaction quick-swap, and Genshin desperately needs more character model variety and various QoL fixes that we're getting now. But turn-based games tend to have a lot of issues I'm expecting we will see as the content dries up and we get past the initial batch of characters. You're already just roaming the same corridors, auto-killing things. Hearing the same voice lines, watching the same animation each battle.
I don't think I will enjoy ZZZ more than HSR, though.
I wish Genshin would implement at least SOME of the improvements that Star Rail introduced. I'm still going to be playing Genshin in 5 years' time, but my main problem with it over the years has always been how complacent it has felt. There are some things the playerbase has been asking for for almost three years that have never been addressed.
Idk if I would start genshin right now. I will just wait til Hoyo decides to impliment what they have from Honkai into genshin.
the relic rng is basically the same, we're paying more fuel, the relics are separated from ornaments – crafting something with resin is literally once a month, it probably wont make a difference in the long run, i guess its better that we can choose which piece to make when crafting though
Genshin has been the only game I've played for TWO YEARS. I work a ridiculous amount so it takes me a while to do anything. Only ar 57. Gaming is no longer just a fun thing that I do, it's a means of escape. I think it's that for a lot of people ❤ I love genshin
I haven't been logging in yet in Genshin since I started to play HSR and will not probably play soon since I'm not really interested in Kirara and the next patch. I'm contented with my last Baizhu pulls and he's the only one I really want to pull since 2 yrs ago. I dunno if I will like the fontaine patch since I'm not a fan of underwater mechanics so I really can't say for sure if I 'll still get back with GI (I mean you gotta finish fontaine's AQ before you proceed to Natlan anyway and Genshin never fixed their quest issues where you can't finish a quest if the NPC is busy with other quests). 🤣
the games been out for less than a month of course the side quests doesnt feel as tedious dude hear yourself
You really said that Genshin is dry right now because they want people to play Star Rails, has to be the most copium thing I heard all day 2:50
MMORPG would be super good. I hope they can do that eventually That's really the biggest thing someone like me would've been looking for. However, it wasn't the biggest itch that both HSR and GI have been able to scratch, which is combat and story.
The only reason I'm not on HER right now is bc it doesn't work on any device i have so I'm waiting for it to drop in ps4 same as genshin which I'm still playing but I'm am getting burned out finally mostly due to the nonsense in the story and quests. It's so draining to have neither the writers of characters taking anything seriously while it's also not funny etc like in normal jpegs and anime. It happens I get it but this just feels different. At the same time I already know I'll love HSR based on reviews like this. So many little improvements are appreciated and it looks honestly beautiful. It's just a waiting game for me.
Some things to consider:
1) HSR is at launch, while GI has been around a while. If you look at just Mondstadt and Liyue, the quests felt more focused as well, the events were more about using the main gameplay loop, and the puzzles weren't complicated. Put some rocks on this platform, light some torches. Inazuma kicked up the puzzle difficulty. And I'd say that Sumeru toned it back down.. The hardest bit of Sumeru puzzling was figuring the mechanics of the stupid drum puzzle, not the actual puzzle itself.
2) Yeah, Genshin needs to improve the weapon banner. At its core, needing 240 wishes potentially to get a copy of the one weapon you want is bad. But then it gets worse. Especially when they make overly niche weapons. Things like the Jadefall's Splendor or Kokomi's weapon ruin any weapon banner they are on for most players. And the four star situation sucks as well. With 5 of them on there, you're basically looking at 1 of each one, on average, per five star. So getting and refining those is also a major pain.
3) Yeah, the early characters sin Genshin show a lack of designer experience. It makes sense that that experience should carry forth. Of course, players just skip those older characters, so it mostly only matters for the permanent banner ones. Those do have issues, with a character like Qiqi having the worst constellations of any five star. And so while Dehya has strong constellations (a lot of kit related issues, including a weak starting point, yes, but her cons are strong), well, players will still be getting those other five stars.
4) Genshin's RNG in artifacts is definitely bad, and the impact of it gets worse the longer you play. Problem is the amount of RNG, plus Genshin's lack of power creep. This makes sets, like getting a four piece for Dehya or XIao, particularly bad, as the four piece will represent a small upgrade over what you already have… with the same substats. But getting the same level of substats, compared to things you have been collecting for 2+ years… And, of course, you can't target one set in domains. It needs a bunch of RNG removed.
5) Genshin's shop could also use improvements, yeah. I've said for years now that they need a universal 4 star refine/constellation token in the shop. Okay if they wait like 3 months before a character gets added to the token, as well leaving out the BP weapons, sure, but players need to be able to target any of the four star characters/weapons for slow but steady improvement. And Genshin still needs to fix the Royal Weapons to be worth using.
That said, I think HSR has one, really big drawback, and that is that it is a turn based RPG. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of those out there. And the vast majority of those are completed games. So, if you're playing on the PC, you're far, far better off playing one of those, rather than a game that purposely makes it gameplay worse because it is a gacha game. Like why would you play HSR when you can instead play a game that lets you do as much as you want on any given day, rather than wanting you to play daily, but only for a little bit? Genshin at least benefits from having less competition in its niche. Rather than starting HSR, just hit up Steam or whatever and get one of the very reasonably priced older JRPGs for a better gameplay experience that doesn't try to control your life/behavior. It's better for you, both now and in the future (we'd get better games if games with predatory mechanics made less money).
I played HsR for 2 days at launch got all the free pulls and have never signed in again. Needless to say I wasn’t hooked. I’m very much not into the turn based Pokémon style battles, totally takes me out of the story.
I play Genshin since launch… and now the endless dialogues and endless quest line and annoying puzzles… turned me off.. I enjoying hsr
Hey Walrus nice seeing you at Night Market didn’t wanna bother you while you were with your friends but just wanted to say big fan! 👍
At least for now, I'll be playing and buying the Welkin for both. Genshin for gameplay, Honkai because I actually like the characters
better game system wise maybe.. but game play wise? hell noo. alot of my friends dropped honkai watching the same animations/ dialogue over and over again. the game gets stale over time.
Wow, puzzles in Genshin are difficult, annoying and/or tedious? Imagine having that little brain power. Couldn't be me.
perfect point about Genshin puzzles…. the pre-req quest for the most recent event. The puzzle mechanics were so convoluted for the drumming sequence that they weren't self evident at all. Went to look at the mechanics and it's like 4-5 pages of explanation. I instead queue up a youtube vid, watch for like 15 seconds (no explanation just the person do it with no voice) and it's like "oh, that's the mechanics" and I do the puzzle. Really wish they didn't try to explain mechanics with text dumps
I played star rail and it has so many good options for f2p but Mark my words in terms of exploration star rail is going to die soon
Its a win win for Hoyoverse. One thing though, once Wulthering Waves comes and a lot of sweaty gamers transition to there, Gensin will defintely need to step up their game. End game will be the name of the play for longetivity aside from a strong lore, not too much but more in depth as well as with a side of humor.
Genshin is a better game overall for the long term, since Star Rail seems to be more limited on the long term, as you can put almost anything in Genshin and it fits, while Star Rail more of a corridor style RPG and, when you beat an area, there is no interest in going there if not for farming
You're comparing hsr to a wrong game.
There is a game which is very similar to hsr…RAID SHADOW LEGENDS.
It's gonna sound like I'm trolling but…Raid shadow legends despite being garbage can compete with HSR

i really like star rail, but i still enjoy genshin's combat way too much to seriously play HSR instead. Unfortunately i don't have the mental space for both right now
Honestly, I play both game because of interesting story. I don't wanna rush thing because that will make me burnout, so slow and steady one thing at a time, doing daily resin, then pull/warp character I love
Inazuma puzzles are gargabe in every sense
Good analysis Walrus, but I'm not interested in a turnbased gacha right now, and if I were, I'd be more likely to pick up Fate than HSR…
I'm gonna just stick to Genshin for now despite the total lack of content at the moment .
I love HSR but I don't know if it's more F2P friendly than genshin though. My reason is I played genshin with 100% exploration from 1.0 up to date and I also played HSR with 100% exploration from day 1 up to date and there's just not that much Stellar Jade compare to it's equivalent Primo in Genshin. I imagine this would go exponential in gap as patches go by. So meaning if you really want those 5 stars then youd have to reach out for that fat wallet somehow. Unless if you just go ham on copium and wait for their reruns and instead miss all the other new 5 stars which again would go exponential in gap in terms of saving for pulls compared to Genshin. That's just my 2 cents. HSR is a great game. I loved it but when you said it's "MORE" F2P friendly? Nope. Hoyoverse studied their money grabbing mechanics very wisely this time.
Star Rail’s mobile experience is also amazing, which goes a long way. Not everyone plays games on the pc. The mobile gaming market is the largest gaming market. I can put Star Rail down and pick it up without it booting me out of the game. That’s really nice.
There is no doubt HSR is more comfortable and optimised. However the story isn't as compelling at GI, yes I am not much a fan of Paimon, but with GI the lore and the characters really pull me in to keep playing, where as HSR I just a farm on autobattle so I have enough jades to pull for characters. The open world vs the limited world is also not comparable. I keep wanting to parkour in HSR which is simply not possible cause we can't even jump. For me it's clear that GI is far superior in enjoyment because I actually love exploration, even with the limited optimisation and annoying Paimon (I find March as annoying as Paimon, btw)
