Re: the poses from the drawings, the pose is frequently taken from the character's elemental burst (though obviously not always). The string attack where she runs through the enemies ("gotcha!") is her skill, the arm up pose with a bunch of strings around her is her burst.
If you love genshin cinematography honkai impact their other game is a higher level. Hope you enjoy them!

Told you it would be a good demo!! From what we have gathered based on information available, it would appear Yelan runs some sort of underground spy and information network, but some of her past still shrouded in mystery. Amazing analysis as always Phil hope you can pull her when she is released

Loved this reaction and analysis as always, Phil! I believe this entire demo was meant as an homage to the 1920s-30s era of Shanghai (and southern China generally) with the opulent casino/gangster vibe. Jazz was also popular at the time so that fits with the track we hear in this demo as well. I had expected them to go more '40s noir with it but in retrospect this makes more sense given her character and background. Anyway, you know I'll be pulling for her!
This gives me Las Vegas vibes.
The trailer has the hong kong noir feel.

From what i understand, a semblance of early 20th century technology and culture does actually exist in the genshin world, we just haven't seen much of it yet. It's the Hydro region Fontaine where a lot of this stuff originates from, like the camera we get to use in game. It seems like the film noir aesthetic is quite prevalent over there.

She got a really strong femme fatale vibe. BTW, the future region of genshin, which is Fontaine, said will be inspired by the western countries in steam punk era. Maybe we will get more of this "yelan" vibe later on when Fontaine released.

I think the pronounciation is more like "YeLaan". The Japanese version of this trailer has excellent voice expression and timing which in my opinion is the best of all 4 trailers. The Japanese Voice Actress (VA) is May'n who voiced Sheryl in Macross Frontier. I think Mihoyo made the right choice for Japanese VA. A mysterious yet mature voice for Yelan.
Really hyped that you got to this one so quickly. When I watched it and saw the shot where she dodges the crossbow, I wondered what you'd say about that camera work. Great breakdown, as always! Loved the Cowboy Bebop reference. She does give off similar vibes. I think she'd get along well with Faye 🙂
8:43 the city neon light backdrop really looks like a modern Shinjuku/Kabukicho Tokyo. Paired with the jazzy music, this whole trailer is almost a nod to the anime "City Hunter" from the 80's!
You say she's a coward (cuz bow) but what sorta coward dashes towards her enemies with reckless abandon as her E skill?
Same applies for Childe and his melee E.
Tbh I think their "cowardice" is more of a lulling the enemy into a false sense of security….before they get in their face.

Haven't swung by the channel in a bit but when I saw this trailer, I thought of you; wondered why you might think. XD
Well, there IS in fact a secret casino in Liyue. It's at the Yanshang Teahouse (why would a simple tea house have 2 guards and a receptionist who asks you if "you have enough money" ?) There is a paper on the board next to one of the teleport point in Liyue where the stewardess is described as "a girl like a fox" who is famous for her charm to persuade anyone to spend their money (looks like Yelan to me !!). If you are interested, you can watch videos about theories about the Yanshang Teahouse (the details mentionned in these videos are in the game since the beginning, so it means Yelan has been teased since more than a year)
she is the owner of a tea house and at the same time "works" for civil affairs for Ningguang but actually she is a detective/spy who travels all over Teyvat on missions and in this tea house is where she gets a lot of information for that it's basically a casino so that's why her trailer has this theme
Just because the character is a bow user doesn't mean they play like one. Best example is Childe.

She's really great, she doesn't feel like a coward stick user when playing her because of that cool dash. And the animation of her Burst, the flying strings from the dace just looks very elegant.
Her Jazzy sort of character might foreshadow some other regions that share her sort of style such as fontaine which in many speculation has theming with steam punky and club sort of looks which they show a glimpse with two fontaine characters that have alittle of those aspects (In the Genshin Teyvat Trailer back in 2020). And the fact shes also Hydro which is an element connected to a modernish like look such as fontaine may indicate some foreshadowing in some design elements. Its not known is Yelan is directly inspired from fontaine but some elements indicate her taking some inspirations, but also Shneznaya which is the region that has most of its people wearing fur coats which may explain her furcoat on her back. Apparently shes a person whos traveled all over the the genshin world so it seems plausible.
