Sometimes, they even compete with 5-star characters. But what about the newer 4-stars, like those from Inazuma? Take Thoma, Sayu for example, and Sumeru characters Collei and Dori. I don't follow the meta, or 'number game' as I call it in my head, too closely. It's a perfectly valid way to play but it's not how I prefer to do things. I tend to level up everyone, switch out teams, and have fun with different play styles. It helps to switch the game up when I want something new, experiment a little, and try everyone out for a bit.
That said, I don't think 4 Stars are going to be obsolete. Everyone I know who plays Genshin likes to use theirs and has at least one or two on their team at a time. Besides, sometimes you can prefer play styles of the 4 Stars rather than 5. For example, I really like playing with Xinyan more than Diluc. Same with Xiangling/Thoma to Hu Tao. That's not to say that I don't think they are bad (I still like Diluc quite a bit!) but those align with how I play more.
Bennefischl is not a Mistake.
Hot take. I think these units are overrated. I'm AR 55 and have been playing about a year. My fischl, Xingqiu, and Xiangling are all level 1, and Bennet refused to come home, so I never built him when I eventually got him with the recent zhongli banner. As much as people praise them, I actually have a lot of fun with the newer units. I just think that some people take the whole "meta" thing too seriously and take characters fitting more specific roles as a downgrade. I main geo. Gorou is never talked about as a good unit, but he's a staple there with amazing support benefits. I use kuki and collei in hyperbloom. They function amazingly.
The message. Play units you like, not just units that a group on YouTube said was meta.
Something I always liked about the newer four stars is how complex they are starting to become. A lot of them don’t have that straightforward build and you have to really think how to make them more powerful. Also, I don’t think the newer ones are worse per say, I just think people are more comfortable with the old rather than the new. The pros always stick with the OGs such as sucrose, Bennett, Fischl, and Xingqiu. And a lot of people feel obligated to build them because they’ll feel behind or not a good player.
Still sad Chongyun hasn't reached the same noteriaty as his friends in terms of meta.
Honestly an underrated 4* character imo. If 4* characters really are getting worse maybe one day, eventually, my boy Chongyun will get the appreciation he deserves 😭

i'm not sure i mind too much tbh, having solid choices that you can be sure are good is nice in this resource starved game, and niches can always be fun
It probably not a good thing that Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqiu plus 1 is the best time in the game there all free
I think they should also buff the weapons too Look at the Sword of Descension and Predator The Effective only work if your on PlayStation Network and the additionally atk are only for travler and Alloy if you get passed the requirement there still weaker than other free to play weapons. there is nothing good about being a consul player we get longer loading screen and our free stuff sucks Also because the game is free the friend list is over limited. so cant add friends unless there also PlayStation cant remove friend without removing them from PlayStation network
but again the consul free weapon there just there no one can use besides traveler and Alloy and there not good anyway it is useless weapons only taking space

The other 'issue' is that getting a new 4 star means you're going to get a C0-C2 4 star while you might have a C4-C6 of an older 4 star.
I wish I had time to play this game but I stop at 2.8 for lack of time required to grind as f2p. Did Genshin now allow to skip the heavy dialog scene that takes hours per quests?

compared to our 1.0 4*s bennett xiangling sucrose xingqiu fischl beidou ,the newer 4* are quite niche more than bad. Yunjin, Sara, gorou, dmc are some newer ones that are niche but the best for their role
You have to take into consideration that new players aren't going to have access to old 4* and 5* characters until rerun banners. Also genshin is trying to play the long game because if they kept making stronger units yall would cry about power creep. And with some characters (kuki, kokomi, traveler, diona. And others) have all been buffed as the "meta" changes with time.
This is all truth. I am still farming for the original 4 stars and upgrading them. And they are about the only 4 stars I use in teams. The rest are 5 stars 🤦♂️
Personally I love the new 4 star design philosophy. Bennett, Xiangling, Sucrose and Xingqiu were made when characters had to be generalized for team building because back then there wasn't the diversity and wealth of characters that we have access to now. I personally don't think we need more characters like the old 4 stars because it would cause them to become overcentralizing kind of like how the aforementioned characters are. Im happy with sidegrades and unique mechanics for 4 stars and I hope to see it continue.
Mihoyo learned from their mistake.
So there will never be pyro Xingqiu, or Cryo Bennett, or Hydro Xiangling or anything like that.
The first 4*s national team is proved irreplaceable.
– I always think hoyoverse made somewhat similar mistake to some long-running game like Yugioh. Some of thing they introduced early are broken nowadays. Example for Yugioh would be Pot of Greed that it's still banned since the first ban list. However, the big difference between Yugioh and Genshin impact is Yugioh is PvP, while Genshin is PvE. So, it doesn't negatively impact for Genshin as much as PvP games.
– There's 1 idea that I got if they want to make all 5* better than 4* and it's making another ascension level for 5* that can push their level to level 100 and get 1 more passive skill. They can add some super strong passives to give buff as strong as Bennett, or shred resistance like Anemo etc.
* I think this idea might be good if they want to make another floor in abyss or make new end game content that are harder than abyss.
