A Breakdown Of The Abyss [Genshin Impact Theory and Lore]

#genshinimpact #genshinlore
Described as a mysterious world beyond the dominion of the seven, or a space void of life and light, the Abyss is a mysterious concept in the entirety of Genshin’s world that has yet to finally make its move on the people of Teyvat. And today, I want to dive deeper into this mysterious world down below – or above – who knows really?

  1. To be honest,i believe genshin is taking the dark souls method to deliver lore, through past events and small hints in items, dialogues, being situated in the "after the disaster and figure it all out" is how i see it
And even beyond that, the concept of cycles too, things happening again with few differences but same results basically, fascinating

  2. I like how the abyss act like the abyss of dark souls. In that universe, the abyss was technically a part of humanity and of the age of dark that was discarded by the gods. The complete assimilation of humanity into the age of fire and the prolongation of it caused the abyss to become a danger to humans, corrupting them.

Check Dusk dialogue in DS1, she was snatched by the abyss and talks about how it felt familiar, comforting, hopeful as if it was never meant to be a danger.

  3. Anyone else find it odd that “Celestia’s curse” on the people of Khaenri’ah seems tied to the Abyss, the very force that threatens to destroy Teyvat, the land that is supppsed to be under the dominion of Celestia.

  4. The abstract/conceptual map of the world of Teyvat is useful, but it isn't necessarily that accurate in practice. Let me take a tangent for a moment. World of Darkness (WoD) is an extremely famous pen and paper RPG. Many will argue that the world building in this "game" (maybe more appropriately "story telling vehicle") has had a major cultural impact on fantasy storytelling and game design since the conclusion of classic WoD. It even has a name: "post-WoD stories/games" (spoiler, yes, I will argue that Genshin is a post-WoD game/story). The conceptual cosmology in classic WoD is built upon layers of existence. In practice, that conceptual map starts with the Earth using a similar-ish design to the map present here. But then instead of trying to places things in a 3D space of up and down, it uses a conceptual 4D space of "near" and "far" realms. Rather than trying to explain this complex topic in detail here, I entreat you to use your favorite search engine to find "class world of darkness cosmology" images and lore. There are some official images/explanations that you can find and some fan art/explanations. Of a particular pique of interest, the concepts in classic WoD were created by compiling folklore, mythology, history, and culture from across our real planet (maybe you can start to see how and why classic WoD had such a massive impact on games and storytelling that followed it and why Genshin is likely a post-WoD game/story).

A simpler post-WoD example that many here might know comes from the Nasuverse (which many will know from playing Fate/Grand Order). The Nasuverse simplifies the WoD cosmology into: planet, world, and reverse side of the world. The plant is, for example, Earth. It is a cosmological entity with no humans, animals, plants, buildings, or anything on it. It is empty and a being onto its own. The world is essentially a fabric pulled around that planet The world is one possible timeline of existence. This is where people, animals, plants, buildings, etc. exist. On the reverse side of the world is something of a void realm. It is where the entities from age of mystery continue to exist after the age of humanity comes to. So a place where entities like vishaps might exist. For more details, go check out the Type-Moon wiki for mountains of information on its layers of existence.

I share these examples to bring us back to the concept of cosmology in Genshin Impact. The concept of firmament "above" and the Abyss being "below" are likely conceptually accurate concepts. But I think that if they are organized using a generic post-WoD model, things will start to make more sense. What it means to travel from world to world might have new meaning(s). How some entities can "step sideways" and others cannot. In fact, once you start building up your own model, you will probably be able to start coping with how Genshin Impact relates to the universe of Honkai.

  6. "The Abyss" could be a fearmongering term coined by Celestia to instil fear of anything outside of the eggshell. Abyssal powers could very well be natural and neutral forces from outside Teyvat and it just happens that some of them drive people mad and are used for evil.

  7. Hilichurls are able to use elements bcs they also pray to something I remember reading this in the descriptions for the shaman hilichurls and Ella musk’s fathers books on hilichurls !! I could be wrong tho and it’s probably not true but it’s an interesting thought !!😭 so I assume it’s possibly the same for the rest of them

  8. Still holding onto the theory that Teyvat is supposed to be a safe bastion for a civilization to escape Finality that threatens the greater Honkai universe. Teyvat being a bubble universe, I wonder if it’s original construction was to protect humanity from the greater threats of Honkai.

Of course Genshin might never mention Honkai, the Imaginary Tree, The Sea of Quanta, or the threat of Finality, but it still exists in Genshin, even if behind the scenes. No universe can escape the Honkai.

  9. I think abyssal creatures can use the elements because the elements we use are heavenly versions of those elements. Ppl just didn't call it that because they don't know about abyssal elements. So basically the traveler is already using a form of heavenly power.

  10. I still find it interesting how Gold/Rhinedottir created an army of shadow monsters that in during the cataclysm was responsible for likely the death of thousands of people, including even gods and other powerful magic beings, and then she just went on with her business with Albedo and drink tea with other witches (not sure if that happened before or after the cataclysm though). Its like "O no I caused a genocide….anyways back to my studies".

  11. I will just leave some thoughts here because honestly, they are a bit scattered. First, I think the Abyss Sibling''s Light power (all elements combined) is what powers the Abyss elemental use. Sort of in the same capacity the white light displays color through a crystal prism, the Abyss mages and higher ups tend to use crystals with their weapons. Second, I think the the book "Before Sun & Moon" is aptly titled as the origin of the Abyssal power in the first place, makes sense in my mind that the Sun converging with the Moon, eclipsing light would form this dark void power. The question is still, where is the void coming from amidst the Sun alining behind the Moon. My guess is the Moon, a la Honkai Impact.

  12. The way to discribe the abyys elemant

If the elemants are light colours the abyss is paint/pigmented colour

The abyss absorbs evry rlrmant but reflects one back that x can use
If you mix all paint you get black

For or light elements all colours make withe

  13. Something that I find interesting about the crystal "sinner" that I'm not seeing as many people talking about is the clear parallel the game is drawing between it and the dendro archon, what with its blessing seemingly taking the place of the dendro archon's blessing. This is what really makes me think this particular crystal is some piece of King Deshret, as there are already so many things indicating him as a foil to the dendro archon and he was known to be another great sinner.

  14. LORE THEORY ADD-ON (Forbidden Knowledge & 3.5 Archon Quest Mysterious Voice)

I wonder if the voice belongs to the Horned Entity shown in the Dragonspine Mural that's depicted holding the symbol of Life (an atom) in its palm and portrayed almost as if bestowing the Kings in the mural with knowledge (forbidden knowledge) in exchange for their worship. I believe that entity tempted rulers of ancient bygone kingdoms with the forbidden knowledge, while the mural depicts the 3rd king remaining loyal to Celestia as he is portrayed ordering his servants up the mountain towards Celestia carrying what appear to be offerings, while the other two kings hold their hands out receiving-ly towards the horned entity. The dark, horned creature in the Dragonspine mural has a significant symbol found on it that we see repetitively throughout Teyvat & the game (the pointed spiral symbol). This symbol is found on the creature's wings and shoulder.

This symbol does hold an otherworldly origin because not only is it found on this entity, but on Azhdaha who Zhongli's story quest confirms is from below Teyvat/another world (like spiral abyss descends) as well as on many more Abyss creatures we find roaming all over Teyvat and it's an interesting design choice present in cutscenes relating to Zhongli's story who is noted as a "descender" (from another world in other words) in his lore information and the geo element symbol's design taking inspiration from this (just like all other element's symbols appear to be connected to their origins, ex: Anemo wings symbol connected to Venti/Goddess of Time & wind, hydro symbol is same symbol used for Vishaps & the Sangonomiya Crest related to Kokomi & the Enkanomiyans). I also don't believe it is Celestia that cursed the people of Khaenriah. We learned what happens to people who greed for forbidden knowledge, it not only drives them insane but takes away their humanity & changes them physically into monsters (in a Sumeru quest we ran across fatui research notes from long ago detailing human case study subjects slowly turning into monsters with symptoms eerily resembling hilichurl descriptions and the fatui were trying to understand the cause of the mysterious, always fatal ailment/how to cure it). We also further learn what happens to those who greed for forbidden knowledge with the ancient disaster that befell the Scarlet King's people. Forbidden knowledge IS what corrupts and curses those who greed for it, which connects back to the Gensis Pearl mentioned in BP cutscene with Gensis Pearl/forbidden knowledge & what befell the Dragonspine civilization portrayed in their mural.

And guess who is cursed from greeding for knowledge/power of forbidden knowledge? Khaenriahns. I believe the cursed people of Khaenriah (and anyone who is exposed to forbidden knowledge) take the form of the entity that is the source of forbidden knowledge (the mural figure) as they share its horns (ex: large hilichurl or samachurl) and the exact same distinctive pointed spiral symbol I mentioned earlier is also found on the horns they drop, horns they use to construct their structure rooftops (also have this symbol), the smaller hilichurls wear horned masks, and the pointed spiral symbol is even found painted on the rooftops of the tents at Dadaupa Gorge in Mondstadt (& totem pole posts elsewhere), so they clearly worship this entity that is connected to forbidden knowledge. And who are they seen bowing to in the newest Archon quest? The mysterious male voice in the corrupted crystal scene that seems almost amused as it asks why they seek forbidden knowledge/power. Feels all too fitting and connected.

I also believe every civilization Celestia has dropped a nail on (if the nail doesn't serve a different purpose) is due to this entity's doing relating to forbidden knowledge (bc don't forget the Dragonspine mural depicted several kings from ancient civilizations being tempted by the mysterious figure's knowledge receiving it and there are several ancient civilizations we know of that Celestia destroyed with their nails due to forbidden knowledge. likely the civilizations of the very same ancient kings depicted in the mural). It's also noted in lore that hilichurls existed even before Khaenriah (so even more ancient civilization's people cursed the same way sounds an awful lot like the other civilizations Khaenriah has destroyed due to forbidden knowledge problem). Hope you enjoyed this theory, I've been wanting to share it for months but haven't had the time to put it into words till now!!! I probably could've organized this better, I hope everything is easy to understand!

One last thing, the very same symbol depicted in the palm of the mysterious entity could very well be another interpretation of/representation of the Gensis Pearl, if the Gensis Pearl is the source of forbidden knowledge. The entity could be the current holder of the Gensis Pearl in other words. I see why the Kingdom of the Heavens would want to get their hands on it as it rivals their power, hence connecting back to the BP cutscene further with the crown heir tasked with seeking out the Gensis Pearl who became corrupted prior to the 2nd heir's journey (who I believe is Aether vs. Lumine for several reasons but I'll only list the most obvious one bc it gets into too much, but there is more, ex: certain symbols present on traveler's clothing/character menu & they control the Omni element which is a combination of all elements and Omni ties back to the Omnipresent god statue in Inazuma/Celestia to put it extremely brief).

I have further evidence the pointed spiral symbol on the horned entity in the mural is related to the source of forbidden knowledge that I discovered just yesterday that I will be adding on in the comments below this later if you're curious for more!

  15. If the Abyss is truly the real universe outside of Teyvat, that would make so much sense as to why Chlothar told the Princess/Prince of Khaenri'ah "To us, YOU were the Abyss".

Also regarding why the Abyss is able to control the 7 elements that are associated with the Gods and the Light & Human Realm, there's a leak in 3.6 that sorts of answers the quest. I won't spoil what it is, but it's pretty fascinating

  16. What is interesting to note is that from the lore we've gathered Teyvat has cycles. We know about the memories of the dead rejoining the leylines. The curse of immortality is basically a banishment from rejoining the cycle of life. Those of Khaenriah can not pass their memories into the leylines. They are merely forgotten.

In my opinion everything has a purpose and I do believe that good and evil are merely measurements of personal fear. Fear is based on what is right for us which is why very few evil individuals believe themselves to be evil. Back to the point, The Abyss likely serves a purpose and as I see it It is one of Transformation. Tehvat is for all purposes a world with a cycle of life and death. However there are some creatures that remain static and unchanging. The natural balance to the equation is for there to exist the opposite.

Clothar was someone who would bow to no God believing in the achievements of humans alone. Yet moments upon meeting the Sinner he was on his knees. His outright denial of the God's transformed to fanatic obsession. We've seen an abyss herald existing before Clothar created the Order. We've seen Enjou transform into a Lector. We've seen hilichurls, abyss mages, lectors and heralds manipulating the elements without Visions.

Visions are referred to as the divine gaze but from where does the divine draw its power? I do believe the Abyssal energy is the unfiltered raw mana of the universe. Divinity filters it, like a prism as the raw energy is so transformational it is harmful to the user. The price of such power is your identity which for the abyss order is something of an upside. It's very similar to the magic of the Aranara.

You may ask, well then how do the divine hold off such corruption? To be honest the Archons draw from a single element so that is not the divine I refer to but directly to say Celestia. To answer I would suggest the memories from the leylines. Just a theory.

  17. This is such a good, thorough description of what we know about the Abyss, I always appreciate your willingness to dive deep on every topic and explore every possible explanation for why something is the way it is.

One thing I was wondering with the idea that the Abyss is part of the whole universe and Teyvat is the partitioned area that the Primordial One made when it descended, is what that says about “Forbidden Knowledge” – is it forbidden just because it’s outside of the boundary TPO
made? Or is there more to it? How did the Light Realm and the Void Realm coexist before The Primordial One created a physical boundary between them? Is the intolerance to Void Energy something that evolved over time because the two realms are separated, or has it always been like that?

Excited to hear your thoughts about the “Sinner” ! ^_^

  18. I think it's also important to not that the tunnel we go trough to find the Sinner leads to the chasm in the present. Hilichurls still flock there and it is where the sinful abyss monsters came from during the archon war. It could still be down there, trapped. And since there are tons of husks there and a giant drilling machine (ruin serpent), could this have been an attempt to dig the Sinner up which in turn caused the cataclysm?

outlander the 2nd one invaded teyvat fought primordial one
brought powers of illusions and whispers that can break chains and constraints of teyvat and wither it
a vain dream and attempt to break constraints
    some of genshin books mention
    night deepening in the universe
    star devouring darkness
starglitters description says perhaps it can light up other corners of the universe
funny enough another book mentions a dark magic called nakura's hex made by onmiyojis in skytower
this dark magic sucks all life out of the world
but it can store this lifeforce that can be used to create another world

  20. Why do I fel that Attacking Khaenri'ah was the Abyss's Goal and Celestia Took that bait. Curse of Imortality on a group of people who despise you seems like a Terrible Idea unless the Abyss was able to manipulate the gods or inflated their ego into thinking they can take on immortal Humans.

  23. I think the Sinner is a Collective and not a single individual. What borns from earth will eventually return to it. Maybe all the fallen gods in the Archon War, or gods that's been punished by celestia, their souls eventually seeps into the earth and merge into that crystal that call himself "a Sinner".
We know that fallen gods always spill their curse upon the world and can't die. Their power spilled and brought destruction everywhere.

  24. Also reminder that the Abyss doesn’t have complete power over the Light Realm. Visions, the Dainishi Mikoshi, the Celestial Nails, etc. all seem to grant protection from the Void Realm’s poisonous power.

  25. im taking the definition at face value. since its said that enkanomiya is the border human realm, the light realm, and the void realm, maybe the whole world of genshin is a triangle. im standing at south of tsurumi island, i cannot see what is beyond south direction. yet i can still locate the jade palace meaning the world we are on is flat 😀
