Resident Xiao expert back again to answer questions. Xiao definitely has one of, if not the, most tragic backstories in Genshin. It's either between him or Qiqi. But no, as others have said it's not that he's becoming evil or anything. He's just suffering under the eternal pain of his karmic debt. It causes him untold amounts of suffering and that along with his adeptal energy is dangerous to humans so that's why he goes out of his way to avoid any amount of mortal interaction. The consequences of which you'll get to see in his story and archon quests, but that's spoilers. Spoiler free explanation, he has been fighting demons and the eternal undying curses of gods that died in the archon war and he's been doing it all alone for over 2000 years.
Venti's appearance here is also a really awesome part of it because…well that also goes into spoiler territory but it's also a really subtle detail in Xiao's story quest that you might miss if you aren't paying attention so keeping it as spoiler free as I can, long story short Venti is the reason Xiao is still alive today and that's why his interaction with Xiao here is so good. Also another detail is that in his voicelines, it points out that Xiao doesn't allow himself to even sleep at all, so him saying he just wants to rest here is a great piece of character development.
Emotions play a huge part on how the elements and magic affect the world of Genshin, Xiao had to go to war against monsters with very strong hatred and anger, these lingering emotions would affect the elements around and hurt people so he had to absorb this energy to suppress it, but it is hurting him on the inside, it could also affect his senses and he would see the monsters he used to purge and start attacking the innocent
It's like if he had PTSD from war but the PTSD was alive and could leak out
Xiao have such a big good lore with all the adepti story and stuff. I really love Liyue. Its really good! I will wait for your reaction with the archon quest in the chasm. It will expand Xiao lore more!!💕
Ngl its more easy to understand xiao predicament if you do xiao story quest first then watch this.. but this is not a spoiler or anything just its more easy to understand his lore.
Also this trailer is part of the 3rd Lanternrite event and why this is connected to Hutao and Venti when they first met there in lanternrite and now connected to the Waterborne Poetry event and thats why the two host it in the first place.
It's not exactly because he fights for so long, but because he consumes the monsters' negative energy instead of letting it loose.
That's why he's always in pain and can't get close to people to avoid affecting them (vision holders have a greater immunity to karma since the vision itself is a type of filter) elemental energy is toxic in large quantities to people, but vision holders can interact without problems
Glad you decided to watch! I love Xiao and he has been my favorite character since I first saw him in game. I have mained him since he had his first banner in the 1.3 update. He is also the only character I have C6R5 lol. He is one of the big reasons I love Genshin so much.
So far, Xiao is one of the characters in Genshin with the most character development. He seems cold and aloof in the beginning when you first meet him for reasons that others have already explained here. But he gets better and will slowly open up to the traveler and other characters (as seen in the Poetry event). He has definitely come a long way. It's just sad that some new players won't be able to experience some parts of his development journey since some of the scenes are from limited time events, mainly the Lantern Rite ones. At least there's always YT if you wanna see them one day when you're all caught up.
Wanderer also has some juicy lore and good development. I can't wait for you to meet him and see his story through. If you want to "meet" him early, there's the old Unreconciled Stars event back in 1.1. That's technically where a lot of us old players first got to meet him originally. I think It will be okay for you to watch that, since in the timeline, it happens sometime after the Mondstadt archon quest. It was released during the Liyue Archon quest update, so basically around where you're at right now. They should have made that permanent content imo since it has some important lore.
if you like this, you should keep your eyes open for the Quest: Perilous Tail. I'm not sure where you are, so it might be some time yet. As well as all the other good things, it's strong on revealing Xiao.
I love the relationship between Xiao and Venti!! It goes deeper than what you'd think…

I was never a big fan of Xiao, he comes off as too emo but that last part with Baizhu and Qiqi I thought was cute

I’m sure with you that you will get to know him a lot later on (not gonna spoil the fun)

Xiao has been my one of my favorites since he first appeared. Have loved seeing his progress in story
While he isn't turning evil, he could go insane from the karma. Others in the lore have gone insane.
Xiao un lore: rage, depression and suffering
Xiao in actual game: shy little tsundere boy who wants to have friends and be pandered
Glad you decided to watch!

Every time I realize Xiao is slowly losing his sanity, my heart aches
Xiao’s lore is essentially perpetual agony.
Glad you finally got to react to this!
