idgi, this event made me like Scaramouche. He spared Kazuha's great grandfather. It showed that he isn't just a "puppet" "killing machine," as he clearly has his own free will. It made him a much more interesting character to me.

If you want to understand the plot of this event you need to read the Husk of Opulent Dreams lore. You would also have to have read the Rather Aged Notes spread around Tatarasuna and the Katsuragikiri Nagamasa detailed description that gives the reason why Scaramouche destroyed the Raiden Gokaden. It was revenge for Katsuragi who was one of Scaramouche's first friends when he wandered Inazuma.

the reason he killed them and spared the kaedaharas was actually because the blacksmiths killed his friend and kazuhas great grandfather was his friend's son you can learn more about his lore from the artifact set that was released with itto

Alright, let me quickly try to dumb down my 6 hours of lore diving into a couple of sentences –
Scara had few friends in his early life. His first and only friend was murdered and his name was Niwa Katsuragi (We assume). He wanted to get revenge on his killer but when he saw Kaedehara Yoshinori, he realized he may have been trying to kill Katsuragi's son. From there he decided to give up on his quest for revenge, leaving the Ishhin art dying and the Amenoma art the only escapist.
