[4.1] Speculating Arlecchino's Possible Identity – A Genshin Impact Theory

I’m not the first to suspect or suggest that Arlecchino could be a Hilichurl… but I thought it would be fun to dig into the possibility …

  1. *NOTES/CORRECTIONS*

    – I've just realized I never explained why I picked the tale about the Zohar among the dozens of others. It's because Rene & Co are working with Kabbalah and the tree of life, and that's what the Zohar is all about. RIP post-theory clarity brain.

    – Someone in chat also pointed out that there's an Irish folktale about swans called the Children of Lir (LYRIS?! CHILDREN?? ok no more puns. I'll stop.) I just thought it was another neat nod to the swan theory.

  2. side quests and seasonal quest chains tend to lead into giving you a subtext preview of later archon quests.

so its entirely possible arlecchino is just like caterpillar. or something else changed in a similar fashion.

  3. it may or may not be worth anything, but "Cater" (which i think was used as a nickname for Caterpillar) means 4 in Old French

also, this wouldn't be the first time that we got a significant chunk of harbinger's backstory from an unvoiced thing and didn't know it… we got Signora's from an artifact set, Dottore's from different notes from hidden quests and stuff around Sumeru, and Scaramouche's from notes around the Mikage Furnace that we'd pass by while stabilizing it… almost makes you wonder if other random world quests or hidden objectives that didn't seem tied to anything were actually connected to Harbingers and we don't know it yet because we haven't met the other harbingers proper…

  4. Arlecchino thinking or in some waying desiring to protect Fontaine in a way she thinks Furina is incapable of may also explain how she becomes playable.
The Harbingers don't seem to become playable until they either become more known to us and we understand their motivations better (a la Childe) or they go through some kind of metamorphosis to become different/better people (a la Wanderer), so Arlecchino going through some kind of development to make her less antagonistic and have her motivations revealed to be something more sympathetic would lead well into her eventual banner.
Makes me wonder what they'll have to do to Dottore to someday make him playable. I highly doubt they could leave him as he is and also make it make sense that the Traveler would ever let him/one of him join up with them.

  5. This is just a little thing about Caterpillar, but wouldn’t it be really cool if Cater was Carter? When he was telling the story about the dimwitted mages apprentice it just reminded me of him… though someone can feel free to disprove me and tell me why this isn’t possible :’)

  6. Shouldnt arlecchino be reasonably young since she took over from previous Father as ex-orphan? I don't see previous director of the orphange keeping a kid for 400 years without kicking her Dottore's way or just disposing of her.

I dig the hilichurl part but Lyris part is confusing to me with that.

  7. So Egeria just had given new bodies to Remus' people as some form of Oceanids. And they became the Fontainians. She put «spirits» of those golems to the new bodies.

    Do I understand you correctly, don't I?
