Kernel Level anti-cheat is a rising practice in video games. Hundreds of games now employ the most powerful access to your computer in an effort to combat cheaters… but what if that effort was (in and of itself) a risk to your security?
Today I want to examine the idea that rather than protecting you, Anti-cheat in modern video games might actually be putting you at risk.

Anyone knows what happens on Linux with these Ring 0 anticheats?
I really hope that the ransomware using Genshin Impact exploit have only a 0.1% chance to unlock your PC after you pay the hackers.
I like Genshin Impact, but this is why I only play it on Playstation where I have no payment or sensitive personal information stored.
Never been hacked or anything with any anti cheat. Guess they're targeting first world countries only so idgaf. 🤣
First world problems.
In the meanwhile people buy Huawei and Xiaomi phones 😀
How can you be so smart and so fucking stupid at the same time?
If the anti-cheat has vulnerabilities, it just means that they need to be fixed.
If companies are not fixing their security vulnerabilities quick enough, you hold them accountable through regulation and policy.
If the anti-cheat tech is not effective enough at stopping hackers, you iterate and improve on it until it is.
Saying that we shouldn't be using anti-cheat because of a few mishaps when the alternative is literally nothing is just such a braindead take.
7 Days To Die has tens of thousands of players, not total, at any given time, and uses EAC. That's just one game.
People freak out over privacy yet fling the door wide open.
Play on Console.
As you say there are already some anti cheat softwares working as intended, with time all atni cheat softwares will work.
Just let hackers be I guess. Rip multiplayer
Did you say 5% of players cheating in a game containing 10 players?
Imagine having actually managed community run servers instead of matchmaking. The horror.
Shocked Pikachu face games are being used as Trojans
Irony of talking about anti-cheat software instrusiveness and then being sponsored by an intrusive and shitty product. Well done.
Imagine if an RCE for EAC existed…

somewhere private.
Pretty much the only programs you need for pc security is windows defender, which is standard, and malware bytes. I’m sure guardio is a good extension though. That being said, I knew that something was off with anti-cheats. This does not surprise me at all and if you think China won’t use info, then you’re new to the channel lol I’d say watch this dude’s vids.
Never played Genshin, but I do wonder how I can see everything that has kernel level access.. I found some old leftover Genieo (some form of bloat/mal/adware) files from 2014 on my laptop last month. I wonder how much extra hidden garbage I have rotting my system just below the surface. Any tips on how to find these items (for free) on MacOS?
As a gamer and someone in the security field I can say that I have to have a dedicated machine that is only used for gaming and nothing else. I used to be able to run a VM on my system where I played games but, the new anti-cheat updates have made that impossible as I often times can't connect as the software thinks I am running some kind of bypass software.
So singling Genshin is just because author hates it for half legit and half bullshit reasons. Not a good look.
Muta also covered this, kernel level access is like living your front door open
awesome video! thank you so much for bringing awareness to this topic
I miss the days, where an admin with ban privileges was the anti-cheat.
Sure, pros got falsely banned every now and then or people the admins didn't like, but at least it didn't cause a security risk…
IIRC Mihoyo already left China and went to singapore. Correct me if im wrong
this video is just one big add for anti virus .
you don't fool me Upper Echelon Gamers.
I used to review games for a website and starforce drm bricked my DVD drive. Had to pirate the game to finish my review on time.
That's why I play genshin on ps5 and not on PC.
u used a lot of words to say nothing
I usually like your videos. But this video lacks proper understanding on the matter, and lacks any proper sources for any of the main points.
Pretty bad tbh.
I always said this, but people really don't give a fuck… until they get fucked…
Anti-cheat isn't something for me to worry about. I'm not a proud PC boi who gets upset if they can't adjust FOV, or when the frame-rate drops below 30 on a console. That would just be the end of the world.
Ffs people really will spend time and money building a PC and still deal with this. It's like you guys get a high "oooh I built it myself." Such pride over something that's as impressive as a 6 year old following instructions on a set of Legos. And the ultimate show of stupidity is the people who play games like GTAO on PC when we don't have these issues on console.
Mean while Smurfing from account boosters is totally not game ruining and instead encouraged by Moba games.
*amused chinese hacker noises*
We're entering an age where cheating software can run on a completely different system, making it completely undetectable. At this point, nothing short of a representative standing behind you and looking over your shoulder as you play can actually work.
It is a dilema to everyone, players developers. That is why you just can't have everything.
Actually, Windows is the most dangerous software. No other software provides as much access to your information as Windows.
You say that you don't understand why these conversations only ever focus around one Specific game. And then you proceed to just talk about Genshin impact most of the Video. Well there is your answer, you yourself only briefly mentioned other problematic programms. This is exactly the reason why people only ever talk about one Game specifically, because they are focussed on one bad actor and want to vent about it. You could've used this opportunity to talk about all these Security issues in great detail. but you didn't want to make a Big Blockbuster Video about it, wich would've had the potential to shake the industry. You just wanted to make a 13 minute video where you vent about why Anti Cheat is Bad and picked a few of the most Popular Games to carry the interest of your viewers. This is not the kind of video this Topic deserves… And i think if you thought about it, you would agree.
What website is with the list of games and their anti-cheat?
Developers usually aren't responsible for this. Its the coastal publishers who are receiving kickbacks for bundling the software.
you highlighted a problem but offered no solution.
non the less its a good video and useful info.
anti-cheat is just a rootkit trojan
Why would Genshin Impact even need an anti-cheat?
zero sympathy for genchin impact degens they deserve it. I only wish they didn't infect vrchat. Its selective becouse certain games and the people who play them i have zero sympathy for.
