Make sure to watch the whole video before commenting! Lots of people saying things like "why would leaks kill the hype" when I answer it in the first half of the video. Thanks for keeping the comments respectful and TL DR, If you look at leaks I have zero issues with that, just don't share them with people who don't want to see them!
For those that don't understand it killing my hype. I found out about Heizous fighting style very early. I couldn't talk about it to anybody for literally weeks. I kept it to myself and tried to walk on egg shells around my friends to avoid spoiling things to them. I just dislike leaks, its fine to like them, it's equally fine to not like them
I am personally fine with leaks/spoilers (of all kinds), as long as I intentionally seek them. Though I have adapted my hype and excitement, containing it all inside me. So I get to watch what's gonna happen, and relish the experience once it happens to me in game.
As an example: I was spoiled of the big story beats of Warframe's The Second Dream quest (hey Bran, I hope you also consider playing Warframe in the future), and many cutscenes were revealed before my eyes… In the past, I'd really want to not be spoiled of what's going to happen next, but as I grew up a bit, I get to appreciate the "meta-ness" of it all. As soon as I recognized that the video I was watching was spoilers for the game I play, I thought "well, I will experience this myself anyways, glad that I know this beforehand".
That said, that's my own perspective, and I do not expect others to share that sentiment. I do hope these leakers rein it down, and they should really not think of themselves as "whistleblowers" but just "guides" on what's coming next.
Youtube is killing me, it's hard to avoid leaks at the moment.
I remember some russian leakers leaked yae miko splash art 1-2 hrs before hyv officially posted yae miko pic and it really ruined the hype😀 I was unlucky i ran into the leak post tho
To me, i think it's more of a timing thing. Hoyoverse strategically premieres everything about a week in advance of the next update while leaks tend to reveal in the beginning of the new update so over a month in advance. Waiting in anticipation for a week is more hype than a month. From my experience with leaks, it reveals what is being previewed to us anyway. For the Signora example, we learned that she was going to be a weekly boss in the premier already. The leaks for that only showed that also, not anymore context.
The main problem I have with leak consumers is how pretentious a lot can be about it especially when interacting with someone who chooses not to look at leaks. As you said, keep it to yourself and don't ruin the fun for others.
I had this exact discussion yesterday with some friends.
On one side, character leaks help us roadmap our way as f2p, be it saving or skips. But on the other hand, it totally kills the hype (at least for me). Seeing Heizou on the livestream did nothing for me because twitter/discord already flooded my feed with vids/Heizou can do this/Heizou can do that. And it's not a topic i've been searching for, it's either the algorithm's fault, or someone on my timeline retweeting it.
On the other, leaks create possible false expectations and can lead to a worse community experience(which GI already have a bad rep). It kills the thrive of fresh content, it forces the DEVs hands into either backlash or self-pressure.
Yesterday, twitter was really stupid in this matter. A bunch of leakers spoiled all the enemies you will encounter in the new zone, their 3d models, animations, names. Can you imagine finding out about this BY YOURSELF instead? Exploring stuff and suddenly, bam, a new designed enemy approaches. And now that's partially gone because someone else couldn't hold their expectations. If they want to leak stuff, sure, there are a ton of media places for that. But going for mainstream media, where more than half of the watchers don't wanna get spoiled in the first place? Urgh.
True…leaks really do kill the hype…for version 2.7 and 2.8 I really didn't feel any hype at all during the livestreams…although xiao near death situation and zhongli saving him was totally uncalled for so I enjoyed that A LOT…but then again now that I think of it…I think I'll avoid leaks for myself in general cuz it just really kills the overall hype for the livestreams and updates and now I literally know many of the stuffs about sumeru already…but ya as an f2p I really do appreciate character leaks tho…I want to see what atks, skills and position in team comps they're good at so I can plan farming my primogems according and who to pull for…but ya ofc it's a personal preference and people shouldn't share it with the others unless they ask for it themselves and I believe that's a really fair point…also love your reactions and I hope you get to continue it with the same excitement and without being exposed to leaks
I feel like having leaks about a characters design and leaks about what 4 stars will be on said characters banner are fine, but leaks about how a character plays, their constellations and talents etc kill the hype. I feel like hoyoverse should have a roadmap for upcoming new things without spoiling exactly what they are just because how often character designs get leaked
for me leaks is very important. i predict something (sometimes its from lore) and then this leaks confirm my predictions. characters leaks about banners/talents etc is very important too. I dont have a lot of money for games and i need to know which characters will be next ones. It helps me to consider which character i will get/wanr. I like the character not only because of the lore, but also to be interesting in terms of talents.
thanks! same thing here and it's really annoying to see leaks in blatantly unavoidable obvious things like youtube thumbnails.
so if i see any leak on my front page i immediately click on that thing where you block that channel from appearing on your landing page. or if a channel i subscribed to would do that i guess i would have to unsubscribe (thankfully none of the channels i subscribed to share leaks). sadly i will still find leaks from channels i havn't blocked yet or on other pages like on the reddit hp a leak trended recently. it's just so hard to avoid.
maybe it's because unlike when the game officially announces things in their update livestreams or version trailers, they do it in so much more style than a leak. honestly though i don't think that's the only reason. if someone did leaks well edited and put together it also wouldn't be acceptable so i can't really put it into words too, but at least that's probably a part of it.
Leaks have always hyped me more about video games in general than kill hype. It's only story-related leaks that I try to avoid, but they don't break the hype for me if I run into them. In general, though, spoilers for movies/shows also don't ruin the experience for me. It just ends up making me speculate about how that spoiler will play out and makes me excited in a different way. But I'm someone that can get hyped way too easily. To me, official reveals really don't feel different than leaks. That being said, when I search leaks for other games, they're usually not as trustworthy as Genshin leaks. For other games, like Pokemon, we might get some artwork. We might get some reddit post. And it will all be based on speculation. And I find fun it to speculate with the community. Genshin leaks are on another level though. But definitely, I can see how it's incredibly frustrating how widespread Genshin leaks are for those trying to avoid it. You don't have to try at all to be subjected to them currently. Whether it's video titles or thumbnails, they get thrown in with regular Genshin videos as if they're the same type of content. And I know people who are the complete opposite of me. Where leaks and even official reveals /trailers are just as frustrating. My friend likes to go into movies and games knowing jackshit about them. Which I find to be a dangerous game. It's gambling as to whether the movie/game has good ratings and potentially wasting your time. But I respect her for it.
I’m fine with leaks because half of the leaks are ending up something I knew would happen
Okay with genshin spoils that different than getting spoiled on anime. That completely different to me
for some people leaks kill the hype and for some people it gives enough hype to keep them playing, its really subjective
The last time I was totally surprised in Genshin was probably 2.0- 2.2
this. I used to be rooting in the side of leaks because back then leaks were done in like 144p 5fps. Now, especially 3.0 leaks that are everywhere and it's leaking a lot of stuff, i hate it. Teasers are fine, like the Hu Tao leaks back in the day. Personally though, character gameplay leaks I don't mind because as a mostly F2P player I would prefer to pull characters for gameplay over mere aesthetics.
ANYTHING ELSE however, I would pretty much like not to see. ESPECIALLY STORY LEAKS. It seriously kills the anticipation for me. Hyv does it in a way that increases your curiosity with what's happening in the game during the patch with the version trailers, but other than that I generally dislike it now. Mob leaks too, I don't like it when they show new mobs, I like to get my ass beat finding out their looks and skills first hand, it's what make the game really fun in my opinion.
Anime leaks are different mostly because I no longer have the time to binge anime all day, so people posting plots of the new episode or manga chapter is very welcome as it keeps me updated without spending too much time rewatching or rereading previous content and catching up.
but yeah, with how the leaks have been this past several months, i really wish Hyv becomes more strict with people leaking stuff. I mean it's not even 2.8 but 3.0 leaks are everywhere it's insane
This pretty much says everything I have to say about leaks, it's so annoying to have stuff you want to be hyped for ruined by some idiot that couldn't keep their mouth shut
I totally agree about the leaks. I don't care if there are leaks about a character mats but NOT about the character himself like recently with the Sumeru characters and I absolutly despise those about the story… -__-
I was spoiled way before the livestream about Xinyan being in the patch "thanks" to someone who posted a video on YT about "2.8 story quest leaks" with a thumbnail with Kazuha and Xinyan together. >.<
Oh and I was also spoiled about the banners, Fischl's castle and Heizou gameplay, even Fischl and Diluc outfits were leaked only a few days before the livestream… Between Twitter and YT it's hard not to be spoiled unfortunatly even after blocking a ton of leak accounts, there are still more! I think 2.8 is the pacth I've been the most spoiled about and I'm mad for it.
The worst is when you say you don't want to be spoiled to people who post them and they answer you JUST to not watch vids/post on YT or Twitter if you don't want to but bruh… they are forcefully put on my research results/suggestions/timeline without me asking. I had to ban the hastag "genshinleaks" on twitter to avoid most of it but there are still a lot of people who don't use it.
What saddened me the most about this is that I have to block some really talented artists on twitter because of that reason. They draw leaked characters or about upcoming story/events, I can't let them in my timeline or suggestions sadly, because if they draw one time about leaks they'll do it again. T.T
I hate leaks too. I didnt notice for a long time how bad they are for my enjoyment of the game. But I sure try to stay clear of them these days.
Thank you Bran. I was actually in part of this live stream. Thanks for taking a moment to explain the difference in your standard run of the mill leak and a leak from a dev pack. Honestly, I used to write. If someone had managed to get my manuscript before I submitted it and released it it would tank the entire series and leave me open to another writer quickly farming my original idea and releasing it before me. That would leave me open to a copyright lawsuit I'd have to spend more time defending with copious notes and outlines, timestamps and the like and I might still lose. To me, a game leak is like reading the last chapter of a book. Everything up to that point loses its meaning and shine because I already know what the end is. There's no mystery left. Do I understand that many people read the last chapter as soon as they crack the spine of a book? Yes. Do I begrudge them? No… but it's my right to not have it spoiled. I don't know what the leaks are (except the one character's name and design) … but to do that, I had to literally stuff my head in the proverbial sand like an ostrich. For a content creator, this feels like isolation and death. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. You're awesome. Much love.
From what I find out. It can also bring drama to community and game developers.
leaks for me:
– kills current content/character fun
– creates unecessary hype
– could be unfinished content and people make assumitions / rage over it , some for no good reason sometimes
I dont mind character leaks but i avoid any story spoilers, gacha games in the west has historically been a year or more behind their asian counterparts so for me knowing character releases way ahead is nothing strange. But even knowing story spoilers it doesnt ruin the experience, for example Honkai Impact 3rd i knew a lot of story points (not all) beforehand and it didnt ruin the experience at all, its still one of the best stories in games ive played.
Althought the leaks this time is way out of hand, they literally got their hands on the entire dev kit for the game apparently, so im avoiding the leaks more actively now.
part of me wishes this was like ffxiv. the community is pretty good with spoilering story stuff, and datamined stuff is never really something u come across unless you seek it out
My stance on leaks:
I don't think you can compare leaks in a gacha game to an anime unless you're strictly leaking story, but I've never seen any because that's usually not what is shown. Leaks iare a double edged sword; Genshin is a gacha game, Hoyoverse is stingy af with primogems and resources (just imagine what's gonna happen on the game's 2 year anniversary lmao). They have shown they have no interest in buffing characters, (with the exception of Zhongli many patches ago, but that was thanks to leaks), so, if a player who saved up gems for insert character here and they end up garbage, then that player has wasted a huge amount of resources that usually infuriates them. Now if the player is rolling strictly for the character (ex: me with Kuki and Yae Miko), then nothing wrong with that. Genshin is also a rare case where all servers are synced up so nobody knows what is years ahead and what is good or bad, or who/what they strictly want to save for.; FGO, Princess Connect, Granblue Fantasy, etc. are all 2 years ahead.
Additionally, there's a lot changes Hoyoverse has made in response to leaks that they would've have done without it, with "Drip marketing" being the biggest one. They are constantly putting out surveys but it seems like the community doesn't suggest anything meaningful, or Hoyoverse just strictly ignores it. How many people want a new permanent mode for endgame? How many want bug fixes or buffs for weaker characters (Amber and QiQi mains)? We still have been asking for a simple feature to pet the dogs in Liyue and we can't even get that. There is ZERO communication, unless the community creates a backlash too large to ignore like the first anniversary or the weapon banner before charted fate. So, for many, leaks have been this gateway to see if the devs are listening or not.
The problem now, is that leaks have become the biggest news for the game. I see ads on google, facebook, youtube, etc. showing leaks because it knows I like Genshin, its popular, and now its everywhere. The content that is mostly covered in streams is hardly ever in this spotlight, unless its a legit surprise like Alloy was, or its new skins that have the artists at work. And speaking of artists, that's been a new trend recently as well. It doesn't even have to be the game, it can just be fan art of leaked characters showing up everywhere because people are excited or are using the algorithm to their advantage. When Eula was leaked, there was so much fan art that several voice actors and content creators almost got in trouble because they retweeted it. Not good.
So yeah, leaks are a problem and should not exist, but from the perspective of a player who doesn't whale, needs that knowledge, or just wants to know if there is significant quality of life changes coming, I fully understand. Hoyoverse could fix their game's problems so easily by listening to us, yet they don't (as far as we know). That being said, the fact that leaks have become huge gaming news and are shoved in the face of those who don't want to know for that surprise element, I also understand. That stuff is hype as hell, and genuine reactions to a character reveal are some of my favorite things to watch.
Keep it to yourselves, don't promote it, ask before sharing. It should be simple, yet its not.
My two cents on the leaks: MHY and Hoyoverse should track them, arrest them and force them into Courthouses of the leakers' respective countries. These leakers must also permanently be IP, ID, and DNA banned from electronic gaming! The Leakers have gone too far and they also sabotaged the Twitch Stream of Genshin Impact Version 2.8 Special Program!
If I was a content creator I wouldn't want to see leaks too so I can understand your thoughts. But as someone who is not cc, I love to see leaks, not story leaks (I like to experience them in game first time) but character leaks helps you to choose what to farm, how many primos I need and stuff a lot expecially for people who goes f2p or low spender. If I didn't saw new leaks from Sumeru I wouldn't be saving primos right now and it would be pretty sad for future me lol. Also I was thinking to get Diluc skin until I saw leaks. Double save for me from the leaks and that is why I check leaks personally.
It used to be that video game leaks were discussed behind closed doors and out of public view. Unfortunately, with social media and The Algorithm, it only takes a handful of people to normalize a culture of brazenly open discussion.
I look at leaks as spoilers as well. HoYo chooses how and when to reveal them. People may not realize this but marketing contributes to the experience and the expectations of players. Taking away the devs agency to reveal things when and how they want is kinda disrespectful, IMO. I'm not going to tell people they can't indulge but it really shouldn't be rocket science to understand why they shouldn't be normalized.
100% agree with you. There is this FB group I'm in on Genshin it's for 25+ they're super nice my only problem with them is posting character leaks (basically the whole Sumeru environment). Like yeah I don't mind it yet at the same time I tend to lose hype and makes me less interested pulling in them :/
Also on Twitter I use to follow this guy name Zenit (idk I think I misspelled the name) he had to spoil something in the story quest new character scene for 3.0 and I'm like dude wtf really.
This why you're one of my favorite Genshin C.C you avoid leaks and do not talk about in stream.
I agree that leaks are awful cause as soon as it started leaks for Sumeru and their characters half of my fyp has been nothing but leaks and arguments and everything in-between. I've been trying to get away from genshin tik tok now cause of it cause it's like everywhere. I honestly feel worse then I did when I had a burnout from actually playing so I'm moving away from the genshin tik tok community cause it's not helping my enjoyment or my mental health.
The strict rule we have on leaks in your community is a breath of fresh air for me and a comfort. Your genuine and raw reactions to news help me get my motivation to play again~
Totally agree with everything you said here. I hate being spoiled on events/story and recently it's been hard trying to avoid it cause people have been posting promotional art before it is even officially announced and posting images without spoilers warning in general. That and the leaks of characters in the future is getting worse. I don't mind too much if I see a characters fight-style after Hoyoverse drip market them cause it gives me some time to decide if I want to pull for them or not, but if people leak before that point it makes being excited for characters much harder.
i get the story leaks, but not the char leaks part. im hyped for "insert sumera char here" after seeing "him/her".
it makes it easier to plan your primos, if you arent a whale (and or streamer)
i'm leak follower and i understand you as well, the story leak is really kill my hype but i keep follow it because character detail to chose who am gonna pull for. i'm not have enough for every character so i need to plan it who i gonna skip who i gonna pull but yeah i respect you just want to tell you why some POV leak is important to someone like me. oh and i agree with you as well about content creator that talk about leak it's annoyed me as well
For me leaks make me more excited
but too other people not so much…
I think the problem with leaks is that it's getting out of hand
The leaks (For me) used to be really tame and not that crazy
but now the leaks are spreading to tiktok, youtube, twitter, literally everywhere you could go….
and its getting impossible to avoid them.. even if you don't search for leaks you'll still
Get them in your recommended page.
Obviously telling people about leaks who don't want to know about them is a dick move but I don't understand the argument about knowing a character design or a kit in advance ruining the hype at all.
I find the process of finding out about bits and pieces as early as they're available much more exciting and useful than the very limited and often really bad presentation Hoyoverse delivers (inlcuding the test runs with wack artifacts and teams).
As for Bran's comment about a content draught that would come from building a character pre-release:
Wouldn't that just shift the 'stuff to do' to the end of the previous banner instead of the start of the new one?
I also try to avoid all the story leaks and only watch leaks of rerun characters and upcoming character's looks. Having leaks of reruns makes planning much easier and I like leaks where they just only show the character model then its good for me because If I don't like the looks then I won't pull for them despite their strengths. Just like now I am skipping dendro archon, tighnari, N, D and Al because I don't like the looks of any of them.
Normally I dont have too big of a problem with spoilers when they are not story spoilers. I got one of the biggest plot twists in the Jrpg Xenoblade Chronicles spoiled. I was SO freaking mad (and still am even though it has been years :D). And: I would never spoil someone else.
Some leaks look that road maps which for me is ok, hoyo should do that officially, some leaks just spoils things.
As an f2p player who loves Genshin lore, go leak characters that's okay but for the love of god don't leak story quests or lore. Also, I'll never forget how annoyed I was when every update is Scara k wording someone or x character being d word. Like??? There are some who enjoys the lore well and y'all just sound pathetic at this point even tho it's just a speculation.
I agree with him with the the things he said i want to be surprised i want to get that excitement again when i play this game i don't want to know everything about the next update.
As someone who's been at Genshin since the beginning, I'm kind of numb to leaks, I'm pretty sure even Zhongli one of the first characters released was shown before he was out in the game but I agree with the warning thing. Nice video man hope you have an amazing day!
I get this tbh cause one of my twitter accounts is full of genshin leaks cause I was impatient and wanted to know what I could look forward to next but lately I've been thinking of unfollowing those accounts cause I just don't feel excited for things anymore when playing since I already know what's happening weeks in advance
agree Leaks kill the hype specially if they connected to lore. Like you learn who is new Archon or that which Harbinger become playable.
BUT
they allow people to plan on what they spend their primogems and/or money. Not everyone is ready to swipe swipe swipe swipe on every new banner to get that C6 new juicy character after all.
Let's be honest. Genshin is not very Generous gatcha and it has scummy gatcha system where every fucking new 5star is limited, every new 4star is shit (because devs learned they lesson and don't want to give us more Bennett, Xian, Xing, Fischl, etc aka characters that are still used in best teams as either sub DPS or supports), classic banner is still the same thing after 2 years and there are no "pay few dollars and get ticket that let you select old 5star character you are still missing… (example Mona or Diluc)…
thanks to current leak I'm 100% sure I will skip all Sumeru characters (unless they change the certain pyro girl and make her 5star) since visually they are not appealing to me (minus mentioned pyro girl). And now I know I can blow up my saving into rerun banners like Zhongli, Raiden, etc that will happen before Sumeru and in between every Sumeru patch
MiHoYo should just start doing roadmaps with showing what character will be release: Character model, element and rarity…. and that's all. NO NAME, NO SKILLSET, NO CHARACTER UPGRADE MATERIALS, NO REGION ASSOCIATION
Same thing happens to me, whenever I see a leak I subconsciously lose all interest in the new character, event, regions, etc and stop playing for like a week or two.I don't feel like playing because I already know what's going to happen so I can take my time and maybe do it at the very end of the event or banner, I don't know, l just lose all motivation or eagerness and I only feel like doing it after watching someone else's reaction (that wasn't spoiled by the leak) to it, and only then i can get the hype again. Cuz otherwise my reaction is just "ah yeah… that's cool I guess", And it is so freaking difficult to avoid that type of content (the leaks) cuz is freaking everywhere.
The foul thing for me about the leaks are the story. Character leaks are fine keeps me hyped for who to save for. But other leaks, it is a no for me. I don't actively seek leaks but they are flooding 😅
i definitely cant see story/zones leaks.. that ruin the hype for me for sure.. (i dont even watch the livestreams) 😀 characters.. are mass-retweeting.. kinda impossible not to get spoiled.. but i havent seen any animations/abilties yet.. 😀 just the models.. which.. im not happy about,, especialy about one character.. 😀 but.. it is what it is sadly.. holy.. leaks in signatures are shameless.. havent encouter any so far.. but yeah.. thats is 100% report material.. and streamers have the power to massreport it which is nice
Character leaks give me more hype
If I ever do spoil someone about a game or a show, I’d simply just tell them about the plot, maybe some of the main characters, I wouldn’t want to spoil them to the point they know exactly what happens in a certain episode, but sometimes I do spoil people for an episode of a certain show, mostly because it’s extremely hard to understand and you’d have to watch it over like 5 times 😭
As someone who sometimes discusses rumors/leaks for another game, I’m of two minds on this. On one hand, I understand wanting to avoid leaks for a movie because I would too. But on the other hand, I feel like covering leaks/rumors is how I provide value for my audience.
