  1. Thank you so much for speaking about this, I thought I was going crazy!! The “irony epidemic” part of the video helped me realize that I wasn’t alone in feeling like everyone has become so negative at the expense of being “funny.” I recently left a Genshin community discord server because the hate and comments were getting annoyingly negative for no real reason. Also happy birthday <3

  2. I also think it's important to acknowledge that the locations in Genshin are BASED off of real world countries. They're not meant to be a one-to-one recreation of real places and all of the history and culture that that entails. It's a fantasy world that doesn't actually exist but that features elements of real world locations. It's not meant to be 100% accurate or else Genshin would take place on Earth, not Teyvat. Teyvat has a different history and different rules, so of course their characters and environments wouldn't match perfectly with ours. It's taking inspiration, not copying directly. (Not to say that the colorism and all that isn't still a problem of course)

  3. Idk shit I just love her. But if I think about it, I think her design is actually kind of good. Red and allat stuff matches with the flower feather clan, and the blue pretty much represents her abyss corruption. Others may see it differently cus of the harsh, bright colors, but I think it's very symbolic. I also like bright colors

  4. my only gripe with Chasca is the same gripe I have with the entirety of the Natlan cast of Characters and the fact that I cant bring up the white washing without getting called every slur human languages have to offer.

  5. you know, I hadnt realized the cowboy thing was bothering people, I'm mexican and I was so used to going to farm or barn parties where people would wear cowboy hats and dance to the latino version of "achey breakey heart" which is A STAPLE in our culture, I kid you not, every single mexican knows about caballo dorado ("golden horse") the musical cowboy band that is ALWAYS PLAYING on any party be it a quinceañera, wedding or else, so yeah, were very cowboy positive over here

  6. oh also the mualani symbol is because it represents jesus christ and latino culture is very intertwined with religion (mostly catholicism, which is also intertwined with the themes of enemies in genshin such as with baptists, heralds etc)

again just to reiterate, I say this because I'm mexican

  7. The problem I have with not only Chasca, but just all of Natlan, is the technology thing. And more specifically, the way the game didn't set a proper worldbuilding around it beforehands. For Sumeru and Fontaine, we already knew since way before their release that these were advanced regions. We obtained the Daguerreotype back in Liyue for example, or we made Fontaine films back in Inazuma, so we knew. And since Fontaine seemed to be most likely inspired by Industrial Revolution, it made sense. For Sumeru we also knew before that they were very advanced on scientific research, and we got an whole long explanation about how the Akasha worked and how it was due to Irminsul. We were prepared for it, just like we are prepared for Snezhnaya to have tech because we saw the Fatuis using it since years.

But in Natlan's case, we had nothing. Back then, we only had one or two NPCs that told us that there were hotsprings, but nothing much else. We know that Natlan people don't leave their land, but Natlan isn't closed to tourists. So if Natlan is supposed to have such high technology, why didn't we meet any NPCs to talk about it ? The lack of worldbuilding preparation is what makes Natlan feels off to me. To see a giant flying gun, motorcycle and DJ platines meanwhile the game stated that the most technologically advanced regions were Snezhnaya, Fontaine, and perhaps Sumeru, seemed very out of place for me.

  8. Genshin is a fictional world “merging cultures” or taking inspiration and not making it accurate to OUR culture isn’t colorist or racist it’s not supposed to be our world it’s a fully fictional world… as for chascas design people find her ugly for many reasons 1 the blue and red clashes and doesn’t look good to some people 2 the makeup her makeup is the most stand out of any character yes yun jin yelan and many other characters have makeup however hers is the most standout, and her eyes to me also look a bit odd this is probably intentional to make her look more deer like(like how Kokomis eyes look fish like) hope this helps.

  9. I so so so agree with the whole irony epidemic thing. It's a thing I've been quietly but very consciously observing happen for the past like 4 years. I hate people like that and I try to keep them away from myself and my communities (I'm a mod on a relatively large server.) It gives off SUCH bad vibes. I always try to keep things super sincere and, not to toot my own horn, but I feel confident in saying that the atmosphere that we've cultivated there is like a cringe-less haven. Most of the regulars engage with the content of the fandom we're in seriously. It's really nice.

All that being said, however… perhaps I'm an odd one out and you're right about everyone else being a bandwagon-jumping hater, but Chasca's design immediately stood out to me as unpleasant. I like her as a character and I did engage seriously with her story, as I do with all of Genshin's story. But like legitimately, I cannot get over how uncomfortable to look at her model is.

I'll spare you the details since at this point I'm sure you've heard all of it a hundred times and are tired of it. But like seriously, I do feel that the reason her design is such a point of contention is because something is off about her model. It's definitely believable that the irony epidemic has worsened it a ton, but at least, I don't think it came from nowhere.

I really just wish people understood that there's a time and place for things. Like, I joked about her a couple times with close friends but I don't feel the need to poke fun at her every single time she's mentioned. People like that are obnoxious, and I totally understand why you're so exasperated.

BTW, I'm glad that you called out the stuff about people calling her design busy. Although I may have thought that at some point (though tbf I've never thought her outfit itself was bad,) I've always been pretty cautious about saying these things about Natlan characters. Cause yeah, a lot of the designs in these cultures are """busy""" when compared to American sensibilities. It certainly gets into iffy territory.

Onto something more positive. I'm really thankful to have learned about the vaqueros thing! I actually had no idea about that. My opinion about the cultural appropriation thing was kind of in the air because I wasn't sure/hadn't done my own research and I tend to hold out on forming an opinion until I actually learn about things… but, I admit I wasn't getting good vibes because I thought it had to do with like, a conflation of cowboys and native Americans. Which… would make sense as the kind of conflation that Hoyo would make, but would be super insensitive. I'm really glad to hear that it isn't like that, and is based on an actual culture that was adopted. It's funny how we came full circle from Chasca saying that your past painful memories are important, to this. Even though the origin of those cultures may have been negative, they're still able to become an important part of culture for people today.

  10. I'm still sticking to my opinion that Chasca's design is kind of offensive and that whitewashing the characters is pretty bad, but I genuinely like Chasca too, nevertheless. I like her personality a lot.

  11. Little side note from a German. I know our history is not nearly as tragic when it comes to colonialism and racism in the sense discussed in this video(tho partially yeah but the germans them selves are often rightfully shown as a villain. Tho I have also seen that a lot of points made in Natlan and Sumeru are not made in Mondstadt and Fontain. First of all I could be getting really offended and Mondstadt because it is only portraying the south of Germany. This is a stereotype. But most people here make jokes about it and I dont really care since I am here for the small details like Mondstadt not only being reduced to war and focusing more on literature and Music as it has been Germanys grates history focuses before the wars. Also saying that Chasca is bad because she is based on bad people falls flat in Mondstadt as well. If we are hating on Chasca because she might be based on a family that took part in colonialism where is the hate for Eula? Historically shouldn’t she be the ultimate german bad guy because of her bloodline?
Also her story was realistic enough what might have saved her in that discussion.(side note I have a good friend at school. Super liberal. Loves history and partaking in events to remind our town of the ones murdered in the third reich. But he feels grateful sorrow and regret because his grate grandfather was a high officer and following the regime closely. My friend is deeply haunted by this and so I see Eulas story as one we hear a lot over here)
I understand that eastern and southern culture has suffered a lot but you are playing a Chinese anime themed gacha game for gods sake. If you want to complain how about taking the whole ingame world apart and not only those parts that will guarantee you a good boy star because you are standing up for people who you have never even met or talked to about the issue. Sounds a bit like white savior complex to me but correct me if I am wrong.

  12. Personally not a huge fan of her design and I think I get where the dislike for it comes from. I do think she looks fabulous, but she does not really fit into Genshin. She has heavy makeup where most female characters don't (and personally I don't love that look), her colour pallette is fine but is kinda giving edgy teen steampunk goth. I also think part of the problem is that Natlan as a whole doesn't have as cohesive a design language that clearly ties into the culture(s) it's based on as many of the other regions. You see Neuvillette and you immediately know where he's from, you see Gorou and you immediately know where he's from, but I swear if I saw the pyro archon, I would not be able to tell you where she's from unless I knew natlan was the pyro nation. It's clearly because the cultural inspiration for Natlan is so scattered, while the others are sort of mixed, but not as much.
I don't think Chasca is the ugliest design in Genshin. Personally I think Emilie is way worse, and I have a lot of criticism for a bunch of them, but she is one of the first ones where I just saw her and though "oh, this girl shouldn't be here"

  13. Those people are complete and utter idiots. I like the character and her role in the archon quest also her gameplay is fun I assume people that are talking trash about her probably don't have her or don't know how to use her and they just need to nake something up to pent up their frustrations

  14. I have a dislike for Chasca mainly due to the textures for her articles of clothing. Particularly, I HATE the fact that her singular legging has a shiny texture, even though it's nearly an identical color to her shorts—which are matte.

Her design feels generally lacking in inspiration and focus TO ME. I look at her and feel nothing, I can't get an understanding on her personality based on how she looks. Maybe that's intentional, but it's still something that already turns me off from a character.

But by no means is she UGLY?? That's such a weird take to have. I just want them to fix whatever is going on with her legs 😔

  15. I honestly think that Chasca's hate train is filled with teenagers who think that hating on a (female) character makes them not racist and morally superior lol, just like most people who would pick a fight if you even dared to ship a man and a woman, because they think they're being allies by doing so and only shipping gay couples. They do not realize they're being culturally insensitive.

I just wanted to add (before anyone comes here to twist my words), that I'm only talking about the people on Twitter who are hating on Chasca, not on those who have valid criticism about her and Genshin in general, like the fact she is so white.

I do think that we all are aware that Snezhnaya being based in Russia isn't going to bring more diversity in skin color. I'm also not expecting the Tsaritsa to be a woman of color. Natlan was the only chance we got to have some representation… I do believe that both Chasca and Mavuika should have had darker skin. It's ridiculous to me that none of the current Archons will have dark skin. That's such bs.

  16. I personally don't like her bc of the fact she's meant to be named after the Incan goddess of dawn. Her design and overall gameplay is similar to colonizers of the time (heavy on firearms), which I see as just as distasteful way of using the name of a culture's deity. Chasca would've been amazing if she had actually been designed by people who actually respected Mesoamerican culture

  18. idk ig i'm the only one who really liked her 😅 i find her pretty, i just don't like the short part of her pants, but the rest is chief kiss for me.
i like her story, her gameplay, i love her voice (cn dub) and her personality, i just really really like her a lot 💕 i'm kinda surprised btw but Chasca is not a bad characters and i can't understand why ppl find her ugly.

  19. The funny thing about Chasca, is that I hated her too when she came out. But it was more because I didn't like her kit and didn't find her to be pretty. But I got her on her banner, hoping to lose my 50/50 and now that I play her. I actually like her a whole lot, I like just floating around the map and doing big damage up in the air, while enemies struggle to get me. She's not a main yet, but I am doing my best to build her and give her the best treatment, I can. Because she's a really fun character, that people don't give a chance to. I know people also dog pile on the fact that she acts feral and call her cringe when she growls and like that's literally the whole point of the character.
