Fixing genshin impact's map

Hi everyone, sorry for the long wait.
Just when you thought my videos couldn’t get any dumber, I rise from the ashes to bring you this! I really enjoyed making this video, it was a passion project of mine and definitely took a while so I really hope it turned out well. Fantasy maps in particular are always such a cool thing to study because of the mix between real world and fiction. They’re basically an extension of the fictional worlds storytelling and seeing how developers use maps as a medium for their in game worlds is always so interesting. And I hope you enjoy this exploration too! I just again want to put this out there too, that I am by no means a professional artist or game dev or anything like that, I just really like maps if you can’t tell haha. So this video was made purely for the fun of it.

  1. I feel like genshin could really benefit from a design team just being given free reign to tweak the terrain across the entire map (and editing the map to match) for a patch’s development. 6 weeks of work for 5 or so people would be more than enough to patch up basically every weird bit of terrain, in my opinion.

  2. Amazing job!!! This is one of those things that, you don't realize just how much you need it until someone makes it. Your updated map looks sooooo much better than the in-Game version I can't even…

Also, you might already be aware, but the only location in Genshin where a boat actually moves naturally from place to place is in Chenyu Vale along the Bishui River, an NPC uses a bamboo pole to propel a Bamboo Raft to and from the lower docks of Yilong Wharf (you can also interact with an NPC at the docks to get a ride down the river as well).

I was shocked the first time I saw it in-game while exploring along the river, but I've seen it happen a few times since… you can even fly / swim onto the boat and get a free ride along the river. Always wished they did this with the larger boats in the game, would add so much to the immersion, especially if they randomized the times when boats dock and depart.

Anywho, amazing job, this was genuinely fun to watch and it's a shame Hoyo doesn't put more effort into their own map. : /

  3. Thinking about all the destroyed bridges makes me look at the leaders of a lot of Teyvat in a different light. Like why has nobody in Liyue done something about the broken bridge to the SE of Wangshu Inn? It's obvious locals travel through there because they have done makeshift repairs with rafts. But the richest region in all of Teyvat that can make a floating island palace inside of a week can't get a single piece of basic infrastructure repaired in years?

  4. you mandela'd yourself over the treasure holders in mondstadt because we do see treasure holders there, but only in various character and world quests

also, thank you for your hardwork, the maps you made are going to be very useful as I try to figure out where all the missing people have villages and towns they live at (because obviously the population isn't just the few hundred npcs across the entire world)

  5. I'd say that entire economics system is broken. Liyue is a trading port? Who they are trading with then? Inazuma? They were closed off. Well, there is also a Sumeru port in that part of the world. But what else? Mondstadt? Its port probably leads to Snezhnaya more than to Liyue, also they have established ground trading route, which is probably a lot cheaper and easier (because probable water route goes through the Osial domain… I don't think that ships can sail in those treacherous waters)…

  6. Anemo hypostasis has a paty because people go there to study it, Electro hypostasis doesnt because youd have to go through dadaupa gorge which is basically off limits to people due to it being the main hilichutl settlement in mondstadt

  7. The sumeru map has been so horrendous for me. I love exploring and I – as a f2p player – try to explore without interactive maps. But sumeru is so complex and with so little landmarks – specially on the map – its been a nightmare it made me abandon my approach. It's not fun figuring out where you have and havent been and which treasures you have and havent found yet.

  8. What, no Chasm or Enkanomiya?

Can't believe you did all this. Actually, I can, because it sounds like something I would do if I had the graphical editing skills, but then to make a 40+ minute video about it is more trouble than I could be bothered with.

  9. The first time I ever noticed how weird the genshin map was , was when I was taking a stroll down the narukami shrine path and genuinely said to myself "how is anyone supposed to get up this mountain??"

Granted I was thinking in terms of people with disabilities who probably couldn't get up the stairs but it still stands if you think about how your options are become a weird star thing and zip around like a fly or scale a mountain to go to church

  10. @Beerevity Just finished video gotta say 2 things .

    1. If you think the paths are crazy here 😂 just wait till you get out of bounds….. Lol. Well even without glitches , you can still view many oob roads from gaining some air height along the boundaries like climbing zhonglis pillar, flyign with hat guy, using the air gadget, teleporting with keqing/ alhaitham / chiori. Or you can just go straight into those paths with skills that dont stop like sayus roll. Notably the path above the chi mountain / in liyue is really interesting and the stormterror domain . Which is where the siblings twin was first sighted in archon quest. I followed that road trying to get a glimpse at where the siblings camp was and ended up falling out the map. My whole glitching adventure started there and 😂 since its never been fixed, ill invite you to try just following the path off the cliff. 😅

2.thanks for the video. I have been working on my own paths just because of this same annoying issue. one of the things ive disliked is that the ingame map official map, and fanmade interactive map are all missing entities like mist flowers. Collectables that arent necessarily used for anyone's ascension but instead recipes and potions. Its been a real pain as a genshin gormet to collect ingredients that just dont exist even when using a characters passive skills for local specialties. 😢 Mad respect to you for the map.

There are also lots of shops, not depicted on map and points of interest that you can enter and im always amused in coop how players didnt know they could go inside buildings. Hoyo definitely skipped out on some map icons but forgot others. 😅

  11. The village is 24:12 is mentioned in Beidou's hangout as where she grew up, it's called Downriver! So it was abandoned fairly recently. It's counterpart, Upriver, is only mentioned and no location has been determined afaik.

Fontaine has 100% experienced heavily flood damage before Traveler arrives, as Lynette mentions areas near the foot of Romaritime Harbor weren't underwater previously when we first meet her (though how Fontaine flooded at all when it's already a huge elevated chunk of land is its own mystery) but the game doesn't really do enough to illustrate this with ruins in/near water that look recent.

They've also reused areas that seem abandoned to serve as home for NPCs in events before (eg the two houses with treasure hoarders were home to an author in the Fonanalia Film festival event, who turned out to be a criminal himself, so the treasure hoarder connection is kinda legit) so I think we can assume the gardemeks patrolling areas with homes are meant to be privately owned units for security, rather than an implication that the home are abandoned.

All in all tho, this is so cool, and as someone with who regularly takes part in resinless behavior like trying to walk the "walkable" paths between nations, I wish Hoyoverse would go back and update the maps a little, even if only to fix some of the mistakes you caught here!

  12. I'd say, Genshin's map is on the better side than many other game's maps, which may be exact, but un-readable. Take Tower of Fantasy or Wuthering Waves for example: the map is practically a bunch of icons hanging in the air. You can't read the terrain from it, which makes it very hard to use and most of the time people simply rely on the HUD marks instead of minimap. Overall, maps in almost all modern games are awful. Not even close to the level of Far Cry 2.
